From an intractable pandemic to economic uncertainty and political turmoil, a long list of unprecedented events is adding new stressors to an already stressed-out world.   \n\nTo cope with a near-constant barrage of stressors large and small, mental health professionals and wellness advocates [recommend a variety of strategies](https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/stress-symptoms-signs-and-causes.htm#:~:text=Causes%20of%20stress,on%20you%20can%20be%20stressful.) including exercise, meditation, better sleep and a healthy diet.  Severe stress, anxiety and depression can also be helped with medications that calm anxiety and boost the uptake of the brain’s natural “feel good” chemicals serotonin and dopamine.  \n\nBut a growing body of research suggests that [cannabis can relieve stress and anxiety](https://www.healthline.com/health/marijuana-and-anxiety)\nwithout the side effects of many medications – and pairing it with stress-relieving supplements like valerian and kava kava might amplify its stress-busting powers. Below we list 5 stress-busting killer combos of popular cannabis strains paired with vitamins and herbs.\n\n### 5 Popular Marijuana Strains Combined with Herbs & Vitamins \n\nAlong with cannabis, a number of [herbs and vitamins](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamins-for-stress)\ncontain ingredients that can help to relieve symptoms of stress, and [many of these supplements](https://takecareof.com/articles/best-vitamins-supplements-for-stress-and-anxiety) can be combined with cannabis for an extra boost of calming chemicals during stressful times.  Here’s a list of five cannabis and supplement combinations that can calm stress and relieve anxiety. Mix and match them as you like, since there are no known negative interactions between cannabis and any of these natural substances.\n\n### 1. ACDC and Kava Kava\n\nACDC is a very high CBD strain that has virtually no THC. It’s evenly balanced between indica and sativa, and it’s often used to “take the edge off” experiences that can cause stress or anxiety.  Kava Kava derives from the root of the Kava (piper methysticum) plant and contains kavalactone, a substance that interferes with the breakdown of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a chemical that calms activity in the central nervous system and promotes feelings of relaxation and comfort. \n\n### 2. Grandaddy Purple and Rhodolia\n\n[Grandaddy Purple]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/granddaddy-purple) promotes a relaxed, happy feeling along with relieving insomnia and pain.  This high-indica strain is regularly used for easing the symptoms of stress and anxiety. It can be paired with rhodolia (rhodolia rosea), an herb whose roots work as an [adaptogen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/adaptogens-what-are-they-and-how-to-combine-them-with-cbd) – a substance that boosts the body’s natural responses to \\stress. Wellness advocates say that rhodolia can also help with insomnia, chronic fatigue and stress-related burnout.\n\n### 3. OG Kush and Melatonin\n\nThe venerable [OG Kush](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/og-kush) ranks among the best cannabis strains for stress relief.  This high-THC strain causes relaxation and an uplifting euphoria, and it may also help with insomnia, anxiety and migraines.  Melatonin is a hormone made naturally in the pineal gland, and it’s typically released after dark to prepare the body for sleep.  But melatonin may also relieve symptoms of stress. A recent study found that melatonin could reduce stress and anxiety before surgery as well as the prescription sedative midazolam.\n\n\n### 4. Girl Scout Cookies and Valerian\n\n[Girl Scout Cookies](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/gsc) is a potent indica dominant hybrid strain that may relieve stress, reduce pain and combat symptoms of depression. Valerian (from the root of the Valeriana officinalis plant)  has been called “nature’s Valium” for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, and it also supports sleep.  Research indicates that, like Kava Kava, it helps to inhibit the breakdown of GABA in the brain.  Valerian also contains compounds that seem to inhibit excessive activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain associated with fear and other strong emotional responses.\n\n\n### 5. Jack Herer and B-Complex Vitamins\n\n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) is a classic combination of indica and sativa strains that’s known for its ability to boost concentration and focus, but users also say it helps to reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety.  B-Complex vitamins include the full range of 8 B vitamins, which are essential for transforming food into energy and keeping the brain and heart healthy. But B vitamins can also lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with stress that also plays a role in the development of blood clots and artery damage. \n\n### Understanding Stress\n\nStress is often described as the natural “fight or flight” response to a perceived threat of some kind.  It’s a protective response that keeps us energized, alert and aware of our surroundings during a crisis, a dangerous situation – or even an exciting, pleasant event like getting married or moving to a new city. The stress response can also help people rise to meet challenges like making a speech, playing a competitive game or studying for a difficult exam. \n\nWhen the brain perceives a threat or recognizes a new challenge, the nervous system releases excitatory hormones including adrenaline (epinephrine), norepinephrine and cortisol. These hormones act on multiple systems throughout the body to prepare it for meeting the threat. The heart beats faster, pumping blood to the muscles, blood pressure rises, and sensory systems become hyper-acute.  \n\nUnder normal circumstances, once the stressful event is past, stress levels would decrease and the body would relax and return to a more normal state. But in this modern world, especially one affected by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and multiple other crises, the body’s stress responses may remain in high gear virtually all the time.  When stress responses are always “on,” the flood of excitatory hormones can disrupt health in a variety of ways.\n\nChronic stress can exacerbate existing health problems or create new ones such as insomnia, weight loss or gain, digestive problems and “brain fog” or trouble with concentration and memory.  High stress levels can accelerate the aging process and raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. Stress can also contribute to mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.\n\nA variety of self-care options can help to reduce stress, such as exercising more or trying relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.  Prescription medications such as Prozac, Xanax or Celexa can also help to manage symptoms of stress and anxiety.  \n\nBut some research indicates that the relaxing properties of cannabis or cannabis compounds combined with calming [herbal and vitamin supplements](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/5-natural-supplements-to-boost-your-mental-health) can offer relief for many people struggling with chronic stress.\n\n### Cannabis Relieves Stress and Anxiety\n\nOne reason for the enduring popularity of cannabis is its calming, relaxing and lightly euphoric effect.   Compounds in the cannabis sativa plant, mainly cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, act on the brain’s neurological pathways to promote the expression of mood-boosting chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and the body’s natural calming cannabinoid anandamide.  \n\nA [recent study](https://www.healtheuropa.eu/cannabis-combats-stress/93193/) from Washington State University found that inhaling cannabis could lower stress levels. That’s a key change from previous studies, which used cannabis in pill form in a laboratory setting, rather than exploring the effects of cannabis as it’s normally consumed.   \n\nIn this study, researchers found that the largest reduction in stress came from 10 or more puffs of cannabis strains high in both CBD and THC, while just two puffs of any kind of cannabis could reduce symptoms of anxiety.\n\nIt’s important to note that for some people, cannabis can also cause feelings of paranoia and anxiety, particularly when it’s high in THC, the chemical responsible for the euphoric high.  But the Washington State study provides solid scientific support for the stress relieving benefits of [certain kinds of cannabis](https://topscannabis.com/6-of-the-best-weed-strains-for-stress-anxiety/).\n\n\nStress affects just about everyone, although in very different ways. But the “killer combo” of the most relaxing cannabis strains and supplements can give stressed-out people a new and natural way to cope.\n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/ee604/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png","srcSet":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/69585/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 200w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/497c6/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 400w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/ee604/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 800w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/f3583/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/58556/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/61e93/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 200w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/1f5c5/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 400w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/58556/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 800w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/99238/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3109-markdown","title":"Top 5 Marijuana Strains That'll Make Your Day Brighter","slug":"top-5-marijuana-strains-thatll-make-your-day-brighter","content":"The recent vaping crisis has injured thousands and killed as many as 52 people. These names for the different categories of cannabis are everywhere throughout the cannabis world, but they can sometimes be confusing. If you find yourself unsure of what these terms mean, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. \n\nStill, this distinction is an important one to understand. And it can help you navigate through the many different types of cannabis along with the varying effects that they produce. We’ll break down the differences between indica, sativa and hybrid marijuana strains and how understanding these categories can improve your experiences with cannabis. \n\n### Indicas Came From the Kush Mountains While Sativas Grew Near the Equator\n\nCannabis is a complex medicinal plant. While many talk about it like it’s just one type of medicine, it contains much more than just a single compound. Coming in many different genetic varieties called strains, cannabis can produce hundreds of different medicinal chemicals, and an even larger variety of different chemical profiles. For each strain, there’s a different chemical profile with a unique set of effects (and these profiles can even differ among examples of the same strain). \n\nOne cannabis strain may make you tired, while another could make you feel very energized. One may be particularly helpful for pain relief, while another may actually make your pain worse. One marijuana strain may make you anxious while another could leave you relaxed. So, to use cannabis effectively, it’s important to find a strain that can produce your desired effects. \n\nThe most basic distinction in cannabis strains is between indicas, sativas and hybrids. These terms originated as a genetic distinction between two lineages of cannabis: \n\nThe indica marijuana strains were originally cultivated in or near the Kush mountains in:\n\n* India\n* Nepal\n* Afghanistan\n* Bangladesh \n* Pakistan \n\nThe sativa cannabis strains were first grown near the equator in:\n\n* Colombia\n* Mexico\n* Thailand\n\nAs these genetics were brought to other areas, like North America, they were bred together creating hybrid cannabis strains. \n\nStill, this is just the beginning of a much more complicated picture. These days, we don’t have many pure indicas or sativas left—just a whole lot of hybrid strains. But if you walk into an LP, you’re likely to see a category for each.  \n\nThe truth is, people have started to use the distinction differently. Now it’s used more as a way to describe the effects you’re likely to experience from the strain. When an LP lists a cannabis strain as an indica, it just means it will give you effects you’d expect from an indica. \n\nSo, what are the effects you can expect from these three categories? \n\n### Indica Cannabis Strains Produce Sedative Body Highs\n\nIndicas are traditionally suggested for nighttime use, as their sedative and sleepy effects can leave some feeling too tired to function during the day. This sedative quality makes them ideal for those who need to rest. That said, some find them more relaxing than sedative, and enjoy them during the day as well. \n\nIndicas usually produce a relaxed, heavy feeling throughout the body, coupled with strong pain and tension relief. This makes indicas particularly helpful for those with:\n\n* Anxiety\n* Chronic pain\n* Chronic tension \n* Sleep disorders \n\nFolks who avoid indicas usually say it’s because these cannabis strains leave them feeling too sleepy. People sensitive to the sedative effects of indicas may find themselves feeling “couch locked” (a term that means you don’t feel like moving), groggy or otherwise nonfunctional when taking these strains. If you find this is the case when you consume indicas, try switching to sativas or hybrids. \n\n### Sativa Marijuana Strains Impart Energizing & Mind-Altering Effects \n\nWhen it comes to sativas, these cannabis strains are far from sedative. Usually suggested as daytime medicine, sativas are energetic and tend to have the most noticeable effects on mental activity. \n\nThis cerebral high can sometimes promote focus and creativity, or sometimes leave your mind hazy, depending on the strain. Sativas also offer relief from pain and anxiety like indicas, but can also produce anxiety for folks extra sensitive to sativas’ effects. \n\nThe energetic, cerebral high makes sativa cannabis strains well suited for the daytime treatment of:\n\n* Pain \n* Anxiety\n* Depression \n* Fatigue\n* Mental blocks\n\nPeople who avoid sativas usually do so because either the cerebral high is too intense or because sativas increase their sense of anxiety and paranoia. If you find either happens to you when consuming sativa marijuana strains, try switching to indicas or hybrids. \n\nRELATED: [INDICA OR SATIVA? MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a3457b6100a820006562eeb/indica-or-sativa-making-the-right-choice)\n\n### Hybrid Cannabis Strains Can Bring a Balanced Mix of Effects\n\nThe hybrid category usually applies to marijuana strains that have some characteristics of both indicas and sativas. This means that the hybrid effect profile can vary more dramatically because of all the possible combinations of characteristics.\n\nStill, many hybrids have a grounded effect that isn’t really sedative or energetic, but instead helps maintain a balanced energy. This makes hybrids well-suited for daytime or nighttime use. \n\nThose who use hybrids usually prefer them for:\n\n* Pain and anxiety relief\n* The balance they provide between indica and sativa effects\n* Flexibility between daytime and nighttime use  \n\nIt’s rare to find anyone who avoids hybrids in general, because there’s so much variety. But folks may find certain hybrid strains don’t have the blend of effects they’re looking for. \n\nHow cannabis makes you feel can vary dramatically from strain to strain, and the effects of the same strain can vary from person to person. That’s why it’s important to try many different cannabis strains out for yourself to see how they affect you. \n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/14b42/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg","srcSet":"/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/f836f/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg 200w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/2244e/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg 400w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/14b42/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg 800w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/47498/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg 1200w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/0e329/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg 1600w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/2ff95/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.jpg 2003w","srcWebp":"/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/58556/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/61e93/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp 200w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/1f5c5/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp 400w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/58556/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp 800w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/99238/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp 1200w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/7c22d/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp 1600w,\n/static/09285855acae993fded38a78af9df910/9f43d/8294d2e98c62341f40e08f7af7bbecc7.webp 2003w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2839-markdown","title":"Indica & Sativa: Do These Cannabis Labels Mean Anything? ","slug":"indica-and-sativa-do-these-cannabis-labels-mean-anything","content":"Long ago, cannabis plants grew wild, in regions as far-flung as the Mongolian steppes and the monsoon-soaked hills of Thailand. The plant adapted to its location, gradually morphing into two separate members of the cannabis family: _Cannabis indica_ and _Cannabis sativa_. Botanists identified the two cannabis varieties over 250 years ago. Then, many years later, they identified a third species—the non-psychoactive _Cannabis ruderalis_.\n\nBotanists aren’t in agreement about the geographical origins of cannabis, but it appears that early humans used cannabis as a source of:\n\n* Food\n* Oil\n* Paper\n* Fiber\n* Spiritual enrichment\n* Medicine\n\nSince then, everything has changed. The explosion of cannabis cultivation and the belief that different strains result in different effects has elevated the conversation about the variations between indica and sativa marijuana strains. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nBut what’s the science behind the differences in the two varieties? And should you still rely on these two labels when choosing cannabis products for your specific needs? \n\n### Cannabis Sativa: Long, Lean & Loves the Rain \n\nGenerally speaking, people consume sativa strains when they’re looking for energizing, uplifting effects. Normally, folks report that after consuming a sativa marijuana strain, they feel happier, more open to socializing and their senses are enhanced. \n\nVisually, _Cannabis sativa_ plants are associated with lanky, tall plants sporting the classic, narrow leaves often associated with cannabis art. They continue to be the winners of height competitions, regularly growing over 10 feet tall and more than capable of growing twice that.\n\nSativa-dominant buds sometimes present as lengthier and fluffier, and it’s not unusual for the flowers to display colors ranging toward the orange spectrum.\n\nSativas were originally bred for their size, but they take longer to mature. So that’s just  one of the reasons breeders began to hybridize these plants. This commercialization and industrialization changed the trajectory of the plant forever.\n\n### Cannabis Indica: Bushy, Hardy & Tough \n\nTraditionally, cannabis consumers turn to indica strains when they’re looking for sedative effects to help ease pain and insomnia.\n\n_Cannabis indica_ developed in colder climates—hence the variety’s strikingly different characteristics from its tropics-loving cousin. Indica-dominant plants are generally shorter and stockier, with broader leaves than sativa strains. It’s not unusual to see mature, indica-dominant strains less than five feet tall, with each branch producing bicep-sized, extremely dense, compact buds. \n\nBefore crossbreeding took the cannabis world by storm, indica buds were prized for their dense structure and tendency to present with bluish to purple hues. But color alone doesn’t identify one species from another, as sativas grown in cooler climates may also express beautiful, indigo hues.\n\nAdapting to harsher conditions in Afghanistan, Morocco and yes, the Hindu Kush mountains, indica species became sought after for their high concentrations of resin that protected them from the elements. \n\nBecause they often handle adverse weather conditions better than their tropical sisters do, indica-dominant marijuana strains became a go-to for farmers and breeders living in the nation’s largest cannabis-producing region: the Emerald Triangle, in Northern California. There it’s not unusual to have rain or even snow pummel mature plants at the height of an October harvest.\n\n### Cannabis Genetics 101: Landrace Strains & Crossbreeding \n\nIn the U.S., cannabis farming developed in places with more favorable climates, as many parts of the country were too cold or hot to reliably grow the plants. Seeds were initially smuggled into the country by intrepid travelers and military veterans who found relief from the rigors of battle with Afghani Hash or Thai Stick. \n\nLandrace cannabis strains are defined as those that have never been crossed with any other strains. They’re often identified by their country of origin—Hindu Kush or Panama Red. \n\nAnother way to think of landrace strains is equivalent to the grandmother of today’s varieties. Though aficionados may quibble about which strains qualify as landrace, some that are often associated with landrace strains include:\n\n* Thai\n* Durban Poison\n* Acapulco Gold\n* Lamb’s Bread\n* Afghani\n\n### You’ve Been Told You Need an Indica Marijuana Strain for Relaxation, But Is That Really True? \n\nIt’s the landrace strains that are progenitors of some of the most beloved, popular strains today—but as time moves on, they’re becoming harder to find. Folks often seek out a true sativa or indica cannabis strain based on a belief that an indica- or sativa-dominant marijuana strain will more reliably possess the results they want. \n\nBut really, it’s the _chemotype_—the combination of cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) along with the terpene profile—that is often the better determiner of a strain’s effects, and not whether it’s labeled as an indica or sativa strain. \n\nUsing your nose may be a better way to find marijuana strains that work for you. A citrusy-smelling strain contains the terpene limonene and is likely to make you feel energized and upbeat. Meanwhile, cannabis with a peppery, woody aroma carries the terpene beta-caryophyllene, which may help you reduce pain and inflammation. \n\nThough your friendly cannabis concierge may ask if you prefer an indica or sativa strain, take the time to investigate the flower’s cannabinoid and terpene profiles. These days, reputable marijuana brands and retailers will tell you as much about how much linalool is in your bud as there is THC. \n\nBut for now, it’s most likely that you’ll encounter hybrid marijuana strains when you’re ready to make a purchase. Some can be more sativa-dominant like:\n\n* Blue Dream\n* Sour Diesel\n* White Widow\n* Purple Haze\n\nOr you can also find hybrids that are more indica-leaning like: \n\n* GSC\n* Northern Lights\n* Granddaddy Purple\n\nAnd just for fun, if Panama Red shows up where you buy your marijuana flower, give it a try—and tip your hat to those brave souls who brought these amazing strains across the world, changing it in the process.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our Cannabis 101 index of articles. The reason for this is that\nwhile there are hundreds of marijuana strains currently in existence,\nthey're all uniquely informed by their environment and genetic makeup.\nThis leads to a wide variation in taste, texture and appearance from\nstrain to strain. Here's what consumers need to know about how and why\neach marijuana strain differs from the next:\n\n**The Importance of Genetics and Environment**\n\nJust like children from different families and geographical locations\nwill look and act differently from one another, marijuana strains with\ndifferent genetics grown in different environments differ from one\nanother as well. Here are two terms all consumers interested in\nmarijuana diversity should know:\n\n-   **Genotype**. A marijuana strain's genetics are known as its\n    [genotype](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genotype). The genotype\n    informs the plant's subsequent growth and physical traits\n    and abilities. In many ways, the genotype lays the foundation for\n    what the plant *might* be, and then it is up to the environment to\n    bring these characteristics to fruition.\n-   **Phenotype**. A\n    [phenotype](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenotype) is the way that\n    the genotype is expressed physically. In other words, \"phenotype\" is\n    a word used to describe the traits a plant's environment draw from a\n    plant's genetic code.\n\nTaken together, genotype and phenotype inform what a plant eventually\nbecomes, and they are two of the main reasons a specific strain of\ncannabis may look different depending upon the environment in which it\nis grown and what its genetic makeup consists of.\n\n**The Evolution of Cannabis**\n\nTo understand why cannabis strains vary from one another, it's important\nto understand where cannabis came\nfrom.\nMost experts believe that cannabis originated in Pakistan's Hindy Kush\nregion and later spread to tropical areas around the world. One thing\nexperts agree on is that the earliest species of cannabis are known as\n[landrace](http://urbangreenhouse.com/what-are-landrace-strains/)\nstrains -- marijuana's equivalent of an\n[heirloom](http://ecowatch.com/2015/03/25/grow-heirloom-seeds/) or\nfoundational variety. These landrace strains are the cornerstones of all\nmodern cannabis varieties, and today's indicas and sativas can trace\ntheir roots back to populations of these landrace strains around the\nworld.\n\n**The Cultivation of Cannabis**\n\nRight around the 1970s, independent farmers and enthusiasts began to\nexhibit interest in cultivating cannabis in an indoor environment. While\nfarmers had been growing cannabis around the world for centuries by this\ntime, most of the cannabis cultivation had been in an outdoor\nenvironment. By virtue of stringent laws and little cultural acceptance,\nhowever, the farmers of the 1970s were largely forced to undertake their\ncannabis cultivation efforts indoors. This marked a large change for\ncannabis and a transition from the great outdoors to carefully\nmaintained indoor gardens, complete with enriched soil, high-intensity\ngrow lights and hydroponic grow systems.\n\nToday, indoor grow operations are responsible for producing the bulk of\nthe cannabis consumed in the U.S. In 1995, approximately [50% of all the\ncannabis](http://www.drugscience.org/Petition/C5H.html) consumed in this\ncountry was grown indoors, and that number has only skyrocketed since\nthen. While farmers have learned how to alter these operations to\nprovide the best possible environment for the plants in question, it's\nwidely agreed upon that indoor cultivation [limits the natural\npotential](http://michaelpollan.com/articles-archive/how-pot-has-grown/)\nof marijuana strains due to the fact that the phenotype of modern\ncannabis is largely manipulated by people rather than being left up to\nnature. On the same token, however, the phenotype seen in domestic\nplants depends greatly upon things like lighting, soil characteristics\nand watering -- so domestic strains of marijuana offer differ\nsignificantly from one another.\n\n**How Hybridization Has Affected Diversity**\n\nJust like the transition to indoor grow operations influenced the\ndiversity of cannabis species, so did the hybridization revolution.\nBefore hybridization occurred, people had a choice between indica and\nsativa strains. When growers began to realize that there were certain\naspects of each strain they admired, however, they began mixing the two\nstrains to create new strains that combined the effects of indica and\nsativa.\n\nThe advent of hybridization created a way for marijuana consumers to\naccess a seemingly infinite selection of marijuana\nstrains\nand has contributed to today's craze over developing new and exciting\nstrains. Today's hybrids are drastically more complex and measured than\nthe strains of yesteryear. While many people herald this as a victory\nfor the cannabis community, however, others see it as the development\nthat spelled death for traditional cannabis genetics.\n\nFortunately, some cannabis consumers are dedicated to maintaining\ntraditional indicia and sativa strains of cannabis. In addition to\npreserving the rich history of cannabis, the resurrection of these\nstrains could also have marked impacts on the medical marijuana industry\nby providing unique compounds and opportunities for treatment.\nCurrently, some strains are specifically useful for\npain\nand other medical treatments, and continued exploration into breeding\npractices can help expound on this for the benefit of medical marijuana\nconsumers everywhere.\n\n**The Case for Diversity**\n\nFor consumers who have a favorite cannabis strain or are simply\nwondering why a single cannabis strain looks or tastes different\ndepending upon where it comes from, the answer is two-fold: genetics and\nenvironment. Traditional marijuana strains often look and taste\ndifferent from today's more hybridized versions and, even among\nhybridized versions, things like soil type, lighting, environment and\ngenetics play a large part in determining what the plant ultimately\ngrows to be. With that in mind, it's easy to see how, just like people\nin the U.S. vary from those in China, marijuana grown in one environment\nfrom one genetic selection will vary from strains grown in other\nenvironments or from other genetic stock.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/drome/2928600995/in/photolist-5sMR3B-9pk57-su7tVY-ggSZyy-ggUWCC-onWx-qJQwo-fs8DYC-ph8mwq-qtKPL3-pykSFg-38Aubw-5KaCrX-bB9N7R-BWbS-djzLyZ-gYhjXV-qjJES-fntzEU-rzADFP-6TamFy-ce5s1y-ph8sxH-fCXrvw-fCEQrr-pNa6PK-seQkcA-pKiweZ-gfpCMR-mKTLo-sd5u6P-rzpanN-gfpCGa-6tcYfr-nA7ibB-8ugJr9-ph7RJ7-RSuH-fCEqvv-cj3Mm-64E3Gg-nk5KjP-fCXnRs-fCX3Nq-zggcV-65h518-BW9z-3vX9r-ggVdTd-fs8EEY)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5151515151515151,"src":"/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/a00c7/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.png","srcSet":"/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/69585/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.png 200w,\n/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/497c6/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.png 400w,\n/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/a00c7/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.png 632w","srcWebp":"/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/360af/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/61e93/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.webp 200w,\n/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/1f5c5/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.webp 400w,\n/static/6e53404e3507c5b9d144790476f4ca38/360af/cd342d2b8ae54e5d2ec389c5214058c8.webp 632w","sizes":"(max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_1920-markdown","title":"Indica or Sativa? One\r\n[study](http://archpsyc.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=482939)\r\nindicates that the combination of THC and CBD found in the sativa\r\nsubspecies of cannabis can have an effect on the neural and symptomatic\r\nresponse to fear.\r\n\r\nThe effect of cannabis sativa is more cerebral. The user feels energetic\r\nwith enhanced senses. It improves socialization skills and triggers\r\ncuriosity. The flavor varies from fruity to an earthy taste, depending\r\non the strain of the plant.\r\n\r\nCannabis Indica\r\n---------------\r\n\r\nCannabis indica is a broad-leaf plant that offers a higher level of THC and less CBD than its\r\ncounterpart sativa. This can make it a good choice for pain relief.\r\nIndica plants tend to be shorter and bushier, and the flowers wider and\r\nmore dense.\r\n\r\nIndicia offers a broader body experience and less cerebral stimulation.\r\nThe user feels relaxed and laid back, especially if taken for chronic\r\npain. It counteracts the stress that comes with pain, producing\r\nrelaxation and calmness. In some cases, this herb promotes sleep. People\r\nwho use cannabis indicia are prone to deep intellectual thoughts.\r\n\r\nThe tastes ranges from pungent to sweet and fruity.\r\n\r\nWhat are the Main Differences?\r\n------------------------------\r\n\r\nThe crucial difference between these two varieties of medical marijuana\r\nis the ratio of THC to CBD. Cannabis indica is known for its [higher\r\nratio](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21653452) of the two\r\ncomponents. This gives indica strains a more calming effect than\r\nvarieties that have a low THC to CBD ratio.\r\n\r\nSativa, with its lower ratio of THC to CBD, produces a more vivid effect\r\nthat results in an increased energy level for the user. Indica, on the\r\nother hand, is more sedative and soothing.\r\n\r\nIn general, the differences can be broken down thus:\r\n\r\n-   Sativa produces a more energetic effect, while indica is more\r\n    sedative.\r\n-   Sativa offers a mental boost, so it is a good choice for disorders\r\n    such as depression and PTSD.\r\n-   Indica is calming, so it can help manage pain, relieve nausea and\r\n    trigger sleepiness.\r\n\r\nDifferent Strains and Hybrids\r\n-----------------------------\r\n\r\nWithin each subspecies, different strains exist as well. There are also\r\nhybrid strains that contain a percentage of both indica and sativa buds.\r\nEach strain offers a unique taste and effect, and new strains are\r\nregularly being developed for specific medical uses. Here is a sampling\r\nof just a few:\r\n\r\n-   AK47 is a sativa dominant strain, but marketed as a hybrid. The\r\n    exact ratio is generally 65 percent sativa and 35 percent indica. It\r\n    produces a pungent skunky odor with just a hint of woodsy and spicy\r\n    smell. The user feels a strong cerebral reaction that starts\r\n    gradually and builds. The THC/CBD ratio is 21: .22.\r\n\r\n-   Blueberry: A hybrid strain. The mix will vary, but it is usually 80\r\n    percent indica and 20 percent sativa. It gets its name from the\r\n    fruity aroma and slight blueberry taste. This is a potent form that\r\n    can help manage depression and stress.\r\n-   Afghani: Grown both as pure indica and as a hybrid strain, Afghani\r\n    has a deep purple blush and a sweet flavor. Its calming effect makes\r\n    it a suitable choice for chronic pain sufferers.\r\n-   Northern Lights is a grade A hydro product that is sometimes called\r\n    Aurora B. This strain has deep green colas and with thick, generous\r\n    trichrome formations. The balance of saliva and indica subspecies\r\n    produces a cerebral and body effect. The smell is spicy and earthy.\r\n    The user will feel relaxed but without lazy or sleepy side effects.\r\n    Northern Lights is a good choice for stress relief, especially when\r\n    you want to stay active.\r\n\r\n-   The Girl Scout Cookies strain of medical marijuana is a sativa\r\n    dominant hybrid that is dark green with orange hairs and a little\r\n    sparkle. Despite the name, it does not smell like cookies. The odor\r\n    is somewhat minty, hence the name, with a touch of lemongrass. It\r\n    can be slightly skunky, as well. Girl Scout Cookies produces a range\r\n    of taste sensations. Users report experiencing cherry, chocolate,\r\n    lemongrass and mint. The heavy sativa blend produces a energetic\r\n    feel, making it a good choice to relieve depressant and other mood\r\n    disorders.\r\n\r\nThere are hundreds of strains available, each defined by the effect,\r\nsmell and taste of the plant. The availability varies by location and\r\nprovider. Picking the right one depends greatly on the desired effect,\r\nas well as on personal taste and budget. The doctor may suggest a\r\nparticular strain based on your medical problem and overall health, but\r\npatients can also find strains which they enjoy the effects of the most\r\nwith a similar ratio and hybridization.\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/54591706@N02/5613410129)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.1764705882352942,"src":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/f422e/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg","srcSet":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/f836f/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg 200w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/2244e/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg 400w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/f422e/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.jpg 640w","srcWebp":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/991d2/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/61e93/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp 200w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/1f5c5/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp 400w,\n/static/dd36f0eb427dcf17486b7fa5feccf2c3/991d2/bb58b5c0cd9fd2ddff3efbe28fe1e290.webp 640w","sizes":"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":1,"currentPage":1,"id":5716,"name":"Sativa","slug":"sativa","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
