For years, male cannabis consumers have sworn that the herb helps [increase sexual stamina](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-improves-your-sex-life-the-top-5-reasons-you-should-give-cannabis-a-try) and enhance sexual sensation and now research is starting to back those claims up. \n\n![Untitled63-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled63_min_459d2c3639.png)\n\n### Weed & Sex\n\nHelloMD recently conducted a survey of over 1,400 cannabis users. The survey results showed men and women reporting that cannabis had helped [enhance their sex\nlives](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-use-has-different-sexual-health-effects-for-men-and-women) and increase their sexual desire. What's more, this study isn't the only\none of its kind. In fact, a [2012 survey](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1982.10471911?journalCode=ujpd20) conducted by the **University of Kansas Medical School** also revealed that marijuana enhanced sexual desire and performance in respondents.\n\nWhile doctors aren't sure exactly how cannabis manages to do this, they do know that it [promotes the release of oxytocin](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/07/050720065810.htm),\nthe \"bonding hormone\" that makes us feel closer to our sexual partners. Because of this, marijuana has often been classified as a sexual stimulant, and consumers have been taking advantage of it for years to help them perform better in the bedroom and enjoy sex more.\n\n![Untitled65-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled65_min_5236385225.png)\n\n### Traditional Medicine and Cannabis\n\nDespite what two broad-reaching surveys have found, traditional medical literature doesn't always back these claims up. In the past, studies have found that cannabis can [harm sexual\nfunction](http://www.healthline.com/health/erectile-dysfunction/is-smoking-weed-good-or-bad-for-ed), even going so far as to [cause erectile dysfunction](http://blog.sfgate.com/smellthetruth/2015/10/06/weed-dick-marijuana-may-cause-erectile-dysfunction-study-shows/) (ED) or deplete testosterone levels in men. Even modern-day doctors like\n[Rany Shamloul](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ptr.5074), Ph.D., have conducted more recent [studies and reviews](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110222122212.htm) that claim to prove a positive link between the use of marijuana and the occurrence of ED.\n\nWhile the medical evidence may seem convincing, cannabis doctors are urging consumers to avoid jumping to conclusions about the proof these studies offer that cannabis harms sexual function. These doctors state that traditional studies that look at male sexual performance and cannabis are poorly structured and in need of a more updated approach. Unfortunately, these doctors also acknowledge that it [may take quite some time](http://www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/health/can-marijuana-save-your-sex-life-20160229) before American universities and other medical establishments begin researching sex and cannabis in earnest.\n\n![Untitled64-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled64_min_932fdca536.png)\n\n### The Future of Cannabis and Sexuality\n\nWhile traditional medicine may be lagging behind on this issue, doctors like HelloMD's own Chief Medical Officer, [Perry Solomon](https://www.linkedin.com/in/perry-solomon-md-2b27a65/), M.D., are forging ahead and prescribing cannabis to men struggling with ED, decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. In the words of Dr. Solomon, \"*The way I see it, why not try cannabis? There are side effects to Viagra and zero side effects to cannabis when dosed properly*.\"\n\nWhile cannabis may be helpful in the bedroom in small doses, Solomon advocates being careful about how much consumers use. Too much marijuana can leave men feeling classically \"stoned\" and rob them of their desire to have sex at all. To avoid this, Solomon advocates that consumers use a [vape pen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/everything-you-need-to-know-about-disposable-vape-pens) about five minutes before sex in order to time the effects of the marijuana with sexual activity. Additionally, Solomon recommends using a strain of marijuana that contains [less than 14 percent THC](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/high-cbd-marijuana-strains) and ensuring that male users consume marijuana slowly, to avoid taking too much.\n\nInterestingly, female marijuana consumers don't need to be as careful about dose as their male counterparts. While men may risk a decrease in sexual performance or desire with too much marijuana, women are relatively tolerant to virtually any dose.\n\nWhile [further research is needed](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/playboycom/how-marijuana-affects-male-sexual-performance_b_8224046.html) to bring cannabis into the mainstream as a way to enhance male sexual performance and treat conditions like ED and premature orgasm, doctors like Perry Solomon believe deeply in the treatment and are looking forward to seeing it prescribed more often to patients.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/ee604/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png","srcSet":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/69585/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 200w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/497c6/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 400w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/ee604/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 800w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/fb92e/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.png 1184w","srcWebp":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/58556/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/61e93/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 200w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/1f5c5/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 400w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/58556/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 800w,\n/static/26399da3dfb7d56203ba21090d261170/d8912/9238181f5b6d3f0348feb45a0a299d34.webp 1184w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3041-markdown","title":"How Cannabis May Help Alleviate Erectile Dysfunction","slug":"how-cannabis-may-help-alleviate-erectile-dysfunction","content":"If you suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED), you’re far from alone. About [18 million American men over the age of 20 experience ED](https://www.jhsph.edu/news/news-releases/2007/selvin-erectile-dysfunction.html). \n\nWhile the risk increases as men get older, this condition also occurs in young people. One study, for example, found that [men under 40 account for one in four new cases of ED](https://www.jsm.jsexmed.org/article/S1743-60951530428-8/fulltext).\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### How Do Men Normally Treat Erectile Dysfunction?\n\nMany men who suffer from ED take medications in order to treat their condition, like:\n\n* Viagra\n* Levitra\n* Cialis\n\nWhile these pharmaceuticals certainly help many people, they also come with side effects. The most common ones are:\n\n* Headaches\n* Flushing\n* Indigestion\n* Back pain\n* Runny nose\n* Vision problems\n\nBesides all of these side effects, ED pills can also react negatively to other medications someone may be taking. And though [cannabis has been shown to inhibit the enzymes that break drugs down](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/hi-is-it-okay-to-medicate-with-thc-while-on-cialis/) (allowing more of the medications to stay in the body for longer), it only happens after consuming extremely high amounts of cannabis. So, in general, marijuana doesn’t cause any major complications with ED drugs. \n\nAs a result, many men with ED are increasingly turning to cannabis for help. Below we’ll look at what the common causes of ED are and whether cannabis has a role in helping to address them.\n\n### What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?\n\nThere are many potential causes of ED, including a number of health problems such as:. \n\n* Obesity\n* Diabetes\n* Heart disease\n* Kidney disease\n* Low testosterone\n* High cholesterol\n* Neurological diseases\n* Drug abuse\n* Smoking\n* Unhealthy diet\n\nAdditionally, many medications and medical treatments have side effects that can cause ED, such as treatment for prostate cancer. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS AND MALE SEXUAL PERFORMANCE](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-male-sexual-performance/)\n\nPsychological issues are another significant factor in an ED diagnosis. In fact, [psychological factors cause around 10–20% of all ED cases](https://www.webmd.com/erectile-dysfunction/guide/ed-psychological-causes). These include: \n\n* Stress\n* Anxiety\n* Depression\n\nIf that’s not bad enough, ED can lead to feelings that may make the condition even worse, like:\n\n* Stress\n* Guilt\n* Low self-esteem\n\n### Does Cannabis Help Ease Erectile Dysfunction?\n\nWhether or not cannabis helps with ED is a bit debatable, and it may depend on what’s causing the ED in the first place. \n\nSo far, not a lot of research has been done to investigate whether cannabis has a direct effect on relieving erectile dysfunction in the same way that medications like Viagra do. That’s largely because the federal prohibition against marijuana has made it extremely difficult for scientists to get funding to research the plant. \n\nDue to that lack of evidence, most doctors who don’t typically work with medical marijuana are hesitant to prescribe it for ED. However, if you’re suffering from ED, you should definitely talk to your doctor as it could indicate an underlying health problem.\n\nSo, while scientific research is scarce, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that cannabis can help. Marijuana has long been considered an aphrodisiac and many consumers take it to increase their sex drive. \n\nRELATED: [4 MARIJUANA PRODUCTS TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR SEX LIFE](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-marijuana-products-to-help-improve-your-sex-life/)\n\nWe also know that cannabis can help [reduce high cholesterol](https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jir/2013/263846/), which is a common cause of ED.\n\nSome research and reports from consumers also show that cannabis improves peoples’ sex lives. A survey by condom-maker Skyn, for instance, found that [people who consumed cannabis reported having more active and fulfilling sex lives](https://www.elitedaily.com/dating/weed-smokers-have-more-sex/1275281) than those who didn’t partake. \n\nThat survey also found that 59% of people who consume cannabis everyday are highly confident in bed, compared to just 41% of non-consumers.\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS USERS HAVE MORE SEX](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-users-have-more-sex/)\n\nThat last finding is especially significant given that ED is often the result of anxiety and lack of confidence. As mentioned, as many as one in five cases of ED may be the result of psychological factors. So, the reason cannabis works for some men who have ED may be because it helps address the psychological factors that are causing it.\n\nAnd there’s plenty of research showing that cannabis can have a positive impact on mood and emotional well-being. A [Washington State University study](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/04/180419100110.htm) from last year found that cannabis can reduce short-term feelings of:\n\n* Anxiety\n* Stress \n* Depression \n\nThose researchers found that cannabis with low to moderate tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels and a high cannabidiol (CBD) percentage worked best to relieve stress. \n\n### How to Take Cannabis for Erectile Dysfunction\n\nWhen it comes to consuming cannabis for ED, it’s important to choose your strain and method of consumption wisely. The last thing you want is to get too high—do that and all you’ll want to do is sink into the couch and eat a bag of Doritos. This will hardly put you or your partner in the mood. \n\nChoose a marijuana strain that has a moderate THC content, such as:\n\n* [Mango Kush](https://hellomd.ca/strains/mango-kush/) \n* [Green Crack](https://hellomd.com/strains/green-crack/) \n\nAlso, make sure you’re not consuming too much. Your goal is to be just high enough that you feel uplifted with a bit of energy. You may also find a cannabis strain that’s higher in CBD or contains a THC to CBD ratio of one-to-one works best, like:\n\n* [Canna-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu/) \n* [Harelquin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin/)\n\nIf you’re an experienced cannabis consumer, then a higher THC strain may be OK, so long as you consume it in moderation.\n\nRELATED: [TOP 5 CANNABIS STRAINS TO INCREASE YOUR SEX DRIVE](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-cannabis-strains-to-increase-your-sex-drive/)\n\nThe best way to consume cannabis for ED is by either vaping or smoking it. That’s because smoking and vaping produce effects usually within minutes. \n\nEdibles, on the other hand, tend to take at least 30–45 minutes to kick in. You may want to experiment with different strains and consumption methods in order to find what works best for you. \n\nPhoto credit: Marjan Apostolovic/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. In fact, [cannabis has been used as an aphrodisiac in many cultures for thousands of years](https://books.google.com/books?id=ZArPH0nFGo0C&pg=PA358&lpg=PA358&dq=chinese+texts+cannabis+aphrodisiac&source=bl&ots=Kmr12MRohT&sig=ofJTplJfrwrUv3v0Z7lqSXbPz8k&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjKy4iqkP7YAhUB4oMKHXZ1AmsQ6AEISzAH#v=onepage&q=chinese%20texts%20cannabis%20aphrodisiac&f=false) \n\nWe also have plenty of anecdotal stories of cannabis improving sex. In a previous survey based on studies of this phenomenon, [more than two thirds of respondents reported that cannabis increased sexual satisfaction and pleasure](https://www.jstor.org/stable/3812350?seq=1#page_scan_tab_content). \n\nMeanwhile, another study showed that [cannabis consumers have sex more than those who don’t consume the plant](https://www.jsm.jsexmed.org/article/S1743-60951731417-0/fulltext). \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS USERS HAVE MORE SEX](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-users-have-more-sex)\n\nStill, no one had studied how cannabis affects women’s sexual experiences—until now. \n\n### Study Finds Cannabis Can Help Women Achieve a Better Orgasm\n\nIn this new study from the journal _Sexual Medicine_, researchers looked more closely at how cannabis consumption affects women’s sex lives. They found that [taking cannabis before sex increases the likelihood that a woman will experience a satisfying orgasm](https://www.smoa.jsexmed.org/article/S2050-11611930009-1/fulltext). \n\nThe study involved 373 women over an 11-month period. Those who took cannabis before sex had 2.13 higher odds of a satisfactory orgasm than those who didn’t. \n\nCannabis frequency also seemed to affect orgasms. Those who consumed cannabis regularly had even higher chances (an additional 2.1 higher odds) of experiencing that satisfying orgasm. \n\nMost women said that cannabis also decreased pain and increased their sex drive. \n\n### Does the Cannabis Strain Affect Orgasms?\n\nSo, cannabis can help improve sex, but does strain matter? While this study didn’t discuss specific marijuana strains, others are beginning to investigate how various marijuana strains can impact women’s orgasms \n\nAccording to the sexual innovators at Lioness, the world’s first smart vibrator, [marijuana strain can make a big impact on orgasms](https://lioness.io/blogs/sex-guides/whats-the-difference-between-indica-and-sativa-observing-the-difference-through-data-and-orgasms). But how the plant impacts your sex life may differ from person to person. \n\nThe Lioness vibrator uses biofeedback and data to visualize arousal and orgasm. Using specific patterns of pelvic floor motion indicative of both, Lioness is able to provide data on your orgasms so you can learn more about your own sexual responses. \n\n“With cannabis we've been seeing not only interesting/positive effects on arousal and orgasm, but it seems to differ depending on the individual, the method of consumption, amount, strain (indica-dominant or sativa-dominant), etc,” explains Lioness CEO Liz Klinger. \n\nAn unnamed member of the Lioness team reported that sativa marijuana strains consistently brought on a quick finish, spurring on her orgasms in record time. In contrast, indicas relaxed her body, providing a slow, sleepy and very pleasurable orgasm. \n\nOf course, another woman gave a very different accounting of strain-enhanced orgasms: For this particular woman, sativas provided a longer-lasting sexual experience, while indicas led her to finish more quickly. \n\nWhat can we learn from these two accounts? Well, marijuana strains may affect people quite differently when it comes to getting to and achieving orgasms.\n\nWe already know this is the case with pretty much every other effect you may be going for when consuming cannabis. What’s relaxing to one person may induce anxiety in another. What makes one person feel happy may make another person feel depressed.\n\nAs with all other effects of cannabis, a strain’s effect on orgasm is likely to be very personal. So, you may have to experiment to find the right options for you. \n\n### Using Cannabis to Improve Your Sex Life\n\nReady to start taking cannabis to improve your own orgasms? \n\nYou can go about it in so many ways:\n\nInhaled methods like vaping or smoking cannabis flower can be a great way to go, because they can provide a full body and mind high in a short period of time. A quick inhale a few minutes before your bedroom romp can make all the difference. \n\nFor marijuana edibles, you’ll want to eat them one to two hours before sexy time. But they may not be the most convenient consumption method for improving orgasms, because the timing with the effects of edibles can be tricky. \n\nStill, for some people, the heavy relaxing body high that comes with edibles is their favorite aphrodisiac. If this is the case for you, incorporate your favorite cannabis-infused food into a romantic dinner, and you’ll be ready to go when it’s time to head to the bedroom. \n\nYou can even use cannabis topicals to boost your sexual experience by relaxing your body. Or in the case of specialized cannabis oils, to apply directly to your sensitive areas for added stimulation. \n\nAs we already pointed out, strain preference is very personal and may differ from person to person. That said, there are a few products designed with arousal in mind and are therefore worth trying out. Dosist has an Arouse vape pen, specifically designed to turn you on. \n\nGiven the differences in strain preference, it’s not a sure thing that one of these cannabis products will work for you—but they’re a great place to start if you aren’t sure what to try first. \n\nWhile more research needs to be done to understand exactly how cannabis is pulling off these incredible sex-boosting tricks, the plant certainly seems to help. So, why not try it out yourself and see whether it can help improve your orgasms? The results could be mind-blowing. \n\nPhoto credit: Dean Drobot/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. And according to researchers, the mechanisms that lead to sexual arousal and overall pleasure in the bedroom are a complex mind-body combination of chemical, emotional and psychosocial responses.\n\nTo make things even more complicated, most of the research on sexual dysfunction has been focused on resolving men’s issues. The development of Viagra has changed the lives of millions of men, but nothing comparable exists for women—or does it?\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### Viagra Creator Focuses on Cannabis as a Solution for Women With Sexual Dysfunction\n\nResearchers involved with the creation of Viagra have turned their attention to cannabis. But this time, they’re seeking sexual healing for women.\n\nDr. Harin Padma-Nathan is a urologist who worked on the creation of both Viagra and Cialis. Though he’s pleased that his work on Viagra has produced positive outcomes for men, he recently told the _Boston Globe_, “Men are more simplistic than women. Our sexual response cycle is linear, starting with desire, arousal and orgasm. Women are more complex.” \n\nEnter [Manna Molecular Science](http://www.mannamolecular.com/about/), a Massachusetts-based biotech company known for its development of transdermal cannabis patches and the MannaBot One, a 3D printing process that delivers extremely precise doses of cannabis onto the transdermal patch material. \n\nSome women who’ve worn the patches—designed to address symptoms of pain and anxiety—have reported to Manna that other symptoms, specifically [pain during intercourse, seemed to subside while they were using the patches](https://www.civilized.life/articles/the-co-inventor-of-viagra-is-developing-a-cannabis-based-gel-to-enhance-sex-for-women/). This piqued the interest of Dr. Padma-Nathan, who’s now the company’s chief medical officer. \n\nDr. Padma-Nathan is working on the development of a vaginal gel that women would use prior to intercourse. The gel is designed specifically for women who experience pain during sex. \n\nUnlike Viagra, the product won’t require a prescription. And, unlike the rather pricey erectile dysfunction medications, it’s estimated that the vaginal gel will cost around $30 for 10 doses. \n\nThose of you living in the U.S. may have to wait a bit for the product to hit shelves, but [Canadians will have access to the gel very soon](https://www.dinemagazine.com/female-viagra-now-exists-thanks-to-cannabis/).\n\n### Research Points to a Positive Place for Cannabis in the Bedroom\n\nThere’s a growing body of evidence that for women, getting high is good for getting frisky with their partner. Cannabis has a long history as an aphrodisiac, and these concepts, borrowed largely from the _Kama Sutra_, segued right into the free love culture of the 1960s. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS & SEX: A BRIEF WORLD HISTORY](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-and-sex-a-brief-world-history/)\n\nNow that scientists are studying cannabis, there seems to be evidence that when consumed wisely, cannabis can augment pleasure and decrease anxiety. \n\nA recent study reports that [women who consume marijuana prior to sex have a measurably higher likelihood of achieving orgasm](https://www.smoa.jsexmed.org/article/S2050-11611930009-1/fulltext). \n\n[The study’s authors noted that](ttps://www.marijuanamoment.net/marijuana-use-before-sex-leads-to-more-satisfying-orgasms-study-finds/), among those who reported consuming marijuana before sex:\n\n* 68.5% of participants stated that the overall sexual experience was more pleasurable\n* 60.6% noted an increase in sex drive\n* 52.8% reported an increase in satisfying orgasms\n\n### How Does Cannabis Improve Sexual Desire? \n\nScientist are still puzzling over thousands of unanswered questions regarding cannabis, but the numbers of people reporting improved sexual response has prompted research. Particularly in women, there seems to be a connection between [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the portion of the brain responsible for sexual arousal](https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/19/health/marijuana-sex-kerner/index.html). \n\nBut before you light the candles, queue up the music and break out the vape pen, know that [research has been contradictory with regard to sex and marijuana](https://bigthink.com/philip-perry/heres-how-marijuana-use-effects-ones-sex-drive). \n\nOne of the most important findings is that cannabis appears to affect men differently than it does women. And regardless of gender, the amount of cannabis consumed can greatly affect your experience. Too little may not result in any effects, and too much may transform an amorous evening into an evening of Netflix sans the chill.\n\n### How Can I Introduce Cannabis to My Intimate Encounters? \n\nRegardless of how experienced you are with cannabis, adding the plant to deeply intimate moments can be stressful. Cannabis is generally found to augment physical and emotional sensations, which can be absolutely incredible or incredibly frustrating. \n\n* Always start a new cannabis regime slowly. Consider experimenting with cannabidiol (CBD) as a way to ease anxiety. Since CBD won’t make you feel high like THC can, you’ll have the ability to remain in control and relaxed at the same time.\n* If you’re looking to bring THC into the bedroom, folks are discovering the advantages of microdosing—and what better way to experiment with this way of consuming marijuana than during sex. Microdosing consists of taking just a small amount of cannabis, enough to feel the effects you want. From there you can always increase your dose if you feel you need to. \n* If you’re considering eating a marijuana edible, remember to consume it an hour or two before your rendezvous, to give your body time to digest the active ingredients.\n* Whether you’re taking cannabis to curtail pain during intercourse or simply to spice up your sexy time, consider keeping a cannabis journal, noting what products you consumed, the amount and the results. This way, you can adjust as needed for next time.\n\nAlways remember that cannabis is only one part of a wellness-based lifestyle. You should discuss any medical conditions with your doctor—including sexual concerns. \n\nPhoto credit: 4 PM production/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But few people are talking about how helpful CBD can be for another common problem: sexual dysfunction. \n\nThere are lots of things that can ruin the mood or cause problems during intimate moments. And while none of these problems are the fault of the person experiencing them, they can produce feelings of shame, guilt, frustration or depression—and they can deeply affect romantic partnerships. \n\nThere’s a lot of talk about how cannabis can help with sexual issues. But for those who don’t live in places where cannabis is legal, or who aren’t interested in the mind-altering effects of cannabis, there’s another solution. Thankfully, hemp-derived CBD can help. Studies are now showing that CBD can provide myriad benefits for folks having sexual difficulties. \n\n### Problems in the Bedroom\n\nIf you’re experiencing challenges with your sex life, you aren’t alone. Sexual dysfunctions are incredibly common, [affecting about 43% of women and 31% of men](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11122954). And there are many things that can go wrong. \n\nSome simply lack the desire to have sex, or have difficulty getting aroused. These issues can sabotage sex before it even gets started. Studies show that approximately 30% of women and 15% of men have hypoactive sex drives and simply don’t crave sex as much as the rest of the population. \n\nFor others, the problems come with the sex itself. Arousal is one big issue, and it affects both men and women—between 10–20% of people have a hard time getting aroused during a sexual encounter. \n\nFolks suffering from arousal issues may crave sex, but simply have difficulty becoming or staying aroused. For women, this can correlate to vaginal dryness and lack of pleasurable sensations, and for men the main symptom is erectile dysfunction. \n\nFor women, other common issues include painful sex or difficulty coming to orgasm, both of which affect 10–15% of women. \n\nMen seem to have the opposite problem. Their most common sexual complaint is premature ejaculation, which affects 30% of men. \n\n### How CBD Can Rekindle the Romance\n\nSex can certainly come with a lot of problems, but luckily CBD can help with many of them. In recent years, researchers have discovered various ways that CBD can help with sexual dysfunction. \n\nHere are the top four ways that CBD can help reawaken the romance and alleviate sexual difficulties.\n\n#### 1. Get Out of Your Head: CBD Lowers Anxiety \n\nWhen it comes to sexual difficulties, some issues are physical, but many have psychological components, too. Sex can be complicated, and many people have anxieties surrounding it. Maybe it’s anxiety for the act itself, or maybe it’s just that anxiety from unrelated issues are distracting you from the moment. Either way, anxiety can be a big problem and can really kill the mood. \n\nRELATED:[UNDERSTANDING HOW CBD CAN CALM YOUR ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety/)\n\nThankfully, many report that CBD is a big help, calming nerves and quieting the mind. And the research backs this up, showing that [CBD can lower anxiety](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780128007563000971).\n\nNext time you’re feeling overwhelmed or distracted during sex, try some CBD in a fast-acting form like a [sublingual tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) or a [vape pen](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Vaporizers). It just may get you out of your head and into the moment. \n\n#### 2. Get Into Your Body: CBD Relieves Pain\n\nAnother common issue during sex is physical pain. There are many reasons why pain may happen during sex, but it can really impact your ability to enjoy the pleasurable sensations of intimacy. And painful sex may even contribute to other problems, like anxiety. \n\nIf pain during sex is your main problem, CBD can help you, too. Studies show that [CBD can reduce pain](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181024163625.htm)—and many report feeling less pain when using CBD during sex. \n\nTry an inhaled or [edible CBD](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Edibles) option before your next sexual experience to avoid painful sensations. \n\n#### 3. Ramp Up Your Pleasure: CBD Increases Pleasurable Sensations \n\nPain and anxiety both play big roles in sexual dysfunction, but sometimes the problem is with inadequate feelings of pleasure.\n\nInterestingly, CBD can help with this as well. “CBD increases blood flow and nerve sensation, which can help enhance sexual pleasure and intensify orgasms for all parties,” explains [Dr. Evan Goldstein](http://drevangoldstein.com/), an expert in queer sexual health and wellness. This is good news for men and women alike, who may be able to increase pleasurable sensations and orgasms through CBD use. \n\nPerhaps this link is due to CBD’s interaction with our bodies’ natural endocannabinoids. [Certain fatty acids break down endocannabinoids, and CBD inhibits those same fatty acids. So, CBD increases the general level of endocannabinoids](https://books.google.me/books?id=R146BgAAQBAJ&pg=PA20&lpg=PA20&dq=estrogen+faah&source=bl&ots=XoE3mTYRYU&sig=D3OAGbvOExUpKz6FK-8gV9QIIyc&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiIqe6DyJPPAhWCjywKHQWtBcYQ6AEINjAF#v=onepage&q=estrogen%20faah&f=false). \n\nTo add to this picture, some endocannabinoids seem to be involved with sexual pleasure. Researchers recently discovered that [our bodies have elevated levels of certain endocannabinoids right after sex](https://www.jsm.jsexmed.org/article/S1743-60951731443-1/abstract) \n\nThe scientists working on this project believe that these endocannabinoids may be related to the pleasurable sensations of sex. So, CBD may enhance pleasurable sensations by elevating endocannabinoid levels. As CBD allows for the endocannabinoid system to process more of these endocannabinoids, it may actively increase pleasurable sensations. \n\n#### 4. Boost Your Arousal: CBD Aids Erectile Dysfunction\n\nWhile the increase in pleasurable sensations that CBD brings can help with overall arousal, \nCBD has another benefit for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. One big factor in erectile dysfunction is the presence of dioxins in the body. These toxins can lead to erectile dysfunction as well as low sperm count. \n\nInterestingly, some recent research suggests that CBD actually helps flush dioxins from the system, which may help treat erectile dysfunction directly. \n\nThere can be various reasons your sex life isn’t as fulfilling as you want it to be. Research suggests that the release of hormones from orgasms can have benefits like:\n\n* Reducing stress\n* Easing inflammation and pain\n* Promoting circulation \n\nBut for many women, reaching orgasm isn’t that easy. The Kinsey Institute reports that when women have sex with men, they orgasm 63% of the time. This number rises to 75% when the sex is between women and 85% when the sex is between men. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIt’s clear that there’s an orgasm disparity, and there are many reasons why. Some of the more obvious ones are: As a society, we tend to overvalue penis-in-vagina, or penetrative sex. Additionally, men—and even women—tend to be woefully uneducated when it comes to female anatomy.\n\nSo, what can women (and men) do to close this gap? Achieving an orgasm requires both body and mind. And there are a few things you can do that can help your body get in the right state. And yep, one of those things includes consuming cannabis.\n\n### 1. Think About Sex Differently\n\nVaginal sex is just one kind of sex. There’s oral, anal and manual—to name a few. And for a lot of women, penetration doesn’t always equal orgasm. On average, it takes women 10–20 minutes to orgasm, and 70% percent of women need direct clitoral stimulation to do so. A lot of these requirements don’t seem to favor vaginal sex. \n\nGiven the numbers, it makes sense to incorporate different types of sex into a single lovemaking sesh—especially if you or your partner have differing needs.\n\nAnd who says sex has to involve two people? Masturbation can be especially helpful for women who have a hard time climaxing during partnered sex; it helps them become familiar with their bodies. Practice makes perfect, after all. \n\n### 2. Strengthen Your Pelvic Muscles \n\nYour pelvic floor muscles do a lot: They support your bladder, bowels and uterus, for instance. But they also have an important sexual function. Having stronger pelvic floor muscles can help reduce pelvic pain during intercourse and boost your ability to feel pleasurable sensations. And the best part is, you’re likely familiar with a few of these exercises, which include:\n\n* Kegels\n* Bridge pose\n* Squats\n\nYou just need to do them regularly to see results. \n\n### 3. Exercise More, Stress Less \n\nGetting your body moving can help boost your chances of achieving the big O. Not only does cardiovascular exercise increase circulation, it relieves stress and boosts confidence—all things that are needed for a healthy sex life.\n\nResearch shows that [even a small amount of exercise can boost endocrine and nervous system activity in women](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2050052118300180). Bodily changes like this can make it easier for women to get into the mood. \n\n### 4. Consume Cannabis for Better Sex \n\nOK, you knew this was coming, but seriously, there’s a reason why you keep hearing us talk about marijuana and sex: It’s because it works for a lot of people. The plant has been used as an aphrodisiac since ancient times, and this knowledge hasn’t been forgotten. \n\nSurveyed cannabis consumers say that [cannabis can increase sexual pleasure and satisfaction](https://www.jstor.org/stable/3812350?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents). Maybe that’s why [cannabis consumers have more sex](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1db9e4eea891000897e272/cannabis-users-have-more-sex) than those who don’t consume marijuana. \n\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIS CAN HELP WITH SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION IN WOMEN](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b9f0a7528d6e8000971f7d5/how-cannabis-can-help-with-sexual-dysfunction-in-women)\n\nMarijuana and sex seem to be a match made in heaven. Cannabis can:\n\n* Boost libido\n* Ease anxiety\n* Reduce painful sex\n* Increase sensitivity and pleasure \n\nPut simply, the plant can help us get out of our head and into our bodies. Many companies in the modern-day cannabis market have caught on to this and are making products intended to enhance consumer’s sexual experience. Some include Kikoko’s [Sensuali-tea](https://www.hellomd.com/products/58dbfaa7536356057f2a49c5/sensuali-tea) and Dosist’s [passion](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5a5e73b85f0dc80006b97fe0/passion) and [arouse](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5970fd36117b3714502f2e4c/arouse) vape pens. \n\nOverall, when it comes to reaching your peak, it’s important to remember that everyone’s different. And while orgasms feel great, they aren’t always the hallmark of a quality sexual experience. But hopefully a few of these tips will put you on the path to more frequent and satisfying orgasms. \n\nPhoto credit: [Caroline Hernandez](https://unsplash.com/@carolinehdz)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. There’s no shame if you’ve found yourself in a sexual rut. You aren’t alone. There are virtually endless factors that can affect a person’s sex life: stress, depression, exhaustion, low self-esteem, weight fluctuations or a plain old busy schedule. All of these can all lead a person to feel less than keen on sexy time. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThat said, sex can still be an important stress-relieving and mood-boosting activity. Not to mention a healthy sex life can help you and your partner feel more intimately connected. So, if you’ve found yourself feeling blasé about sex, try some of these holistic tips to increase your sex drive. \n\n### Maintain a Regular Exercise Regimen\n\nA regular exercise routine is like hydrating properly: All prevailing scientific evidence shows it to be fundamental to living a healthy life. Exercise can go a long way to boosting your self-confidence and body image, helping you feel more comfortable with the skin you’re in. And let’s face it, when we feel good about ourselves, we’re more likely to feel good enough to get undressed in front of someone else. \n\nRELATED: [TOP 5 CANNABIS STRAINS TO INCREASE YOUR SEX DRIVE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a80d19af24d1300077ccb3f/top-5-cannabis-strains-to-increase-your-sex-drive) \n\nBeyond how exercise can make us feel about ourselves, physical fitness can also improve our sex drive. \n\nTo assess the effects of short (30 minute) exercise sessions on sexual function in women, researchers from the University of Austin reviewed a body of published studies on the topic. They concluded that [acute exercise likely improves the “physiological sexual arousal in women\"](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2050052118300180) by increasing sympathetic nervous system activity and endocrine factors. \n\nAnother study published in the _Archives of Sexual Behavior_, tested whether [exercise can enhance the sex drive in sedentary men](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FBF01541546?LI=true). The researchers gathered a group of 78 sedentary but otherwise healthy men with a mean age of 48.\n\nFor nine months, they underwent supervised group exercise for 60 minutes per day, three-and-a-half days per week on average. The men were asked to keep a detailed diary of their food intake, smoking habits and sexual activity throughout the study. \n\nOn the whole, the researchers found that men in the exercise group saw an increase in sexual enhancements defined as:\n\n* Intimate activities\n* Reliability of adequate functioning during sex\n* Percentage of satisfying orgasms\n\nThe degree of sexual improvement correlated with the men’s degree of individual improvement in physical fitness. \n\n### Eat Foods That May Boost Libido\n\nLet’s be real. More often than not, headlines about sex super foods are far from reliable. Many of the foods billed as magical aphrodisiacs aren’t actually all that effective in real life. But there are a couple natural foods that have preliminary scientific backing for their sex-positive claims. \n\nOysters have long been called an aphrodisiac; even Casanova himself claimed to eat 50 raw oysters every morning for the sexual benefit. But are these little shellfish really the arousal-boosting food so many claim them to be?\n\nActually, there’s some scientific evidence to support that claim. Oysters are rich in zinc, a mineral [essential for sperm development and sexual maturation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4077582). In addition to zinc, oysters also have two amino acids that have been shown to increase sex hormones in rats: D-aspartic acid and N-methyl D-aspartic acid.\n\nThat said, it’s important to note that there’s no equivalent study on humans regarding these amino acids and their relationship to sex hormones.\n\nRed ginseng is an herbal remedy that comes up when talking about sex. Red ginseng is a Korean plant that’s harvested after six years, then steamed and dried with the peel on. It’s one of the most common herbal remedies used throughout the world for everything from strengthening the immune system to stress to erectile dysfunction. \n\nWhether all of these claims are true is another story, but at least one systematic review of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) lends credence to the claim that [red ginseng can help with erectile dysfunction](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2561113/). Researchers looked at seven RCTs focused on the efficacy of red ginseng as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). While researchers noted a positive connection between ED and red ginseng, they also noted that the sample size and methodological rigor of these studies reviewed were both too low to make any real conclusions. \n\n### Keep Your Alcohol Consumption Low\n\nIt’s no secret that when you drink too much alcohol, it’s near impossible to have good-quality sex. For men, too many drinks could result in an acute case of erectile dysfunction. For women, it can mean a lack of lubrication that can lead to painful and unenjoyable intercourse.\n\nIn order for erections and natural lubrication to happen, [enough blood must flow to the genitals](https://www.jsm.jsexmed.org/article/S1743-60951532665-5/fulltext). Alcohol dehydrates and depresses the nervous system, making it much harder to keep a full erection or proper lubrication for sex.\n\nAnd even if you’re able to achieve an erection or lubrication, alcohol-fueled sex can still end up being unfulfilling. By depressing the nervous system, alcohol can also numb the sexual sensitivity that’s required for arousal. This can lead to unachieved orgasms and overall lackluster sex. And bad sex isn’t exactly going to help you get out of your sexual rut. So, limit your alcohol intake to one or two drinks if you plan to have sexy time after. \n\n### Try Cannabis Before & In Bed\n\nHave you heard the big news? Cannabis consumers have more sex. According to a study by Stanford University published in the _Journal of Sexual Medicine_, [regular cannabis consumers have 20% more sex than non-cannabis consumers do](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1db9e4eea891000897e272/cannabis-users-have-more-sex).\n\nThis conclusion was based on a review of a survey by the Centers for Disease Control with nearly 50,000 participants between the ages of 24–45. While researchers didn’t go as far as to say cannabis was the cause of the sexual increase, other signs point to how this could be the case. As we’ve shared with the HelloMD community, [cannabis can help increase blood flow to erogenous zones](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/59cbf7bb19d92c2a8ec994db/three-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-sex-answered) and melt away the stress and anxiety that can keep us from fully enjoying sexual experiences. \n\nTo try cannabis before or during a romp between the sheets, you can rely on brands that have specific products formulated to help deliver sexual pleasure. \n\n[Foria Pleasure](https://www.hellomd.com/products/56a2c3d259ed4d000c000031/foria-pleasure) is a natural sensual enhancement cannabis oil that’s designed to harness the effects of marijuana to promote relaxation and increase blood flow, creating a therapeutic aphrodisiac. Those things that support health and the survival of the species are rewarded through powerful messages to the brain’s pleasure-reward-memory circuits. Now, research reveals that the recently discovered endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a driving force behind that messaging, particularly where sex is concerned.\n\nAccording to a widely reported study from Germany originally published in the _Journal of Sexual Medicine_ in November 2017, [masturbating to orgasm can trigger the production of a potent natural cannabinoid](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29110806) called 2-arachidonoylglycerol, or 2-AG for short. When that happens, 2-AG activates receptors in the brain’s pleasure circuit, sending messages to do that again, because it feels good. This study had limitations, but it revealed new insights about the functions of the body’s far-flung network of cannabinoid receptors—and how cannabis can be useful for enhancing sexual activity and helping people overcome sexual dysfunctions.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### This Is Your Body on Endocannabinoids\n\nThe ECS is one of many systems in the body that are made up of G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) systems. These networks of cells are stimulated to send messages in response to the presence of a trigger such as a protein or a peptide. ECS receptors are found throughout the tissues, organs and many areas of the brain (except the brainstem), and research suggests that it might be the most densely populated receptor system in the body. \n\nRELATED: [WHAT IS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\nThe ECS plays a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or balance, among the body’s many different processes. That includes maintaining body temperature, supporting the functions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, moderating pain and boosting the immune system. \n\nSo far, research has discovered two different cannabinoid receptors called, imaginatively enough, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are prevalent in the brain, spinal cord and parts of the digestive system, while CB2 receptors occur in organs and tissues throughout the body. These receptors respond in the presence of a group of natural cannabinoids that are produced during activities such as exercise, meditation and sexual activity.\n\nWith the possible exception of the opioid receptor system, each of the body’s GPCR receptor systems is generally primed to respond to a single ligand—a molecule that’s able to bind to another molecule on the cell’s surface. But the [ECS has not just one, but two ligands](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3481524/).\n\nThe most abundant of those natural cannabinoids is anandamide, named after the Sanskrit word for bliss, _ananda_. The other is 2-AG. The fact that both of these chemicals can trigger responses in the ECS is one of the many reasons the ECS is unique in its scope and power to affect a long list of physical processes and health conditions.\n\nAnandamide and 2-AG can be activated independently of each other and can attach to different receptors. CB1 is triggered primarily by anandamide, and CB2 by 2-AG. The German study revealed that during sexual activity these natural cannabinoids behave differently. This offers new insights into the [relationship between cannabinoids and sexual response](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/masturbating-science-orgasms-create-rush-marijuana-trey-reckling/).\n\nThe natural cannabinoids in the cannabis plant are so similar to the ones produced by the body itself that they bind to the same receptors, so that cannabis compounds such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are able to trigger the same responses in the brain and body. That explains why cannabis can be used to treat a long and growing list of many very diverse health conditions—and why it can affect sexual responses as well.\n\n### Masturbation, Orgasm & 2-AG\n\nSexual activity of all kinds sends messages to the brain’s pleasure, reward and memory circuit, stimulating the release of dopamine, often called the “feel good” chemical. It can also release oxytocin, another chemical that triggers feelings of closeness, affection and relationship. In the brain, these messages encode the experience as pleasant and worth repeating. But it wasn’t until relatively recently that researchers learned that the ECS may be the driving force behind the kind of positive messaging that ensures people keep doing the activity.\n\nSexual activity, like exercise, ramps up the production of endocannabinoids. Researchers believed that the one most frequently produced was anandamide, well known for its feel-good properties. But when researchers looked closely at the blood plasma levels of a group of volunteers willing to masturbate for science, they found that the body actually expressed higher levels of 2-AG. \n\nBecause the ECS responds not only to the endocannabinoids produced by the body, but also to ones consumed in various kinds of cannabis products, this study and related research suggest the connection between orgasm and 2-AG. Since 2-AG rewards the brain for having an orgasm, this encourages the body to do it again. This means that cannabis could be helpful in treating sexual problems such as loss of libido or erectile dysfunction. Hopefully, more research on the subject will be forthcoming. \n\n### Can Cannabis Enhance Sexual Activity?\n\nThe 2017 German study was based on the experience of a group of volunteers who masturbated, but other studies exploring how cannabis affects sex have generally focused on whether—and how—cannabis affects sexual activities with partners. Cannabis in all of its forms typically promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety, which can boost positive feelings. The plant’s effects on the ECS can trigger the release of a variety of chemicals related to the pleasure-reward-memory circuits in the brain. \n\nResearch remains to be done on the specific ways in which the ECS—and cannabis—can affect sexual activity of all kinds. But the results are in: Whether you’re with a partner or going solo, the compounds in cannabis can send the right messages to the body and brain.\n\nPhoto credit: [Viliman Viliman](https://unsplash.com/@vilimanovicnevena)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. This holds true when it comes to how marijuana affects men’s reproductive health, too. \n\nHowever, as time goes on and marijuana laws loosen across the world, we’re starting to get a much better understanding of how the plant works. When it comes to men’s health, it’s still hard to know much for sure as cannabis’s effects on the body are highly individual.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) &\n[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Marijuana Doesn’t Lower Sex Drive in Men \n\nMaybe it’s born out of stoner stereotypes, but it’s been a common assumption for decades that marijuana is detrimental to men’s sex drive. Initially, early studies seemed to support this view. And as recently as 2011, one study pointed out that [chronic cannabis consumption—more than once a week—could lead to reproductive issues for men](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1743-6109.2010.02198.x), including lowered libido and erectile dysfunction. \n\nBut more recent research seems to blow that idea out of the water. A 2015 study from Stanford University surveyed about 50,000 people over a 12-year period. The results showed in simple terms that [the more marijuana people consume, the more sex they have](http://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2017/10/regular-marijuana-use-linked-to-more-sex.html). This holds true for both men and women of all different races, religions and ethnicities. People who smoke marijuana daily have about 20% more sex than those who smoke no cannabis at all.\n\nThis doesn’t necessarily mean that men have more sex because they use marijuana—it may be that people who use cannabis are more open to sexual encounters. Even though we don’t know if marijuana and sex have a causal relationship, it’s a pretty striking correlation.\n\n### Marijuana May Still Cause Some Sexual Problems \n\nEven though men who consume marijuana have more sex than those who don’t, marijuana may still cause some sexual dysfunction. Some people have used [cannabis as a cure for erectile dysfunction](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1831906/), but it may not be the most effective treatment.\n\nThere’s strong evidence that marijuana can both [help](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4837321/) and [hurt](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1743-6109.2009.01453.x?deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=&userIsAuthenticated=false) men’s sexual performance. \n\nThese studies aren’t definitive. It’s likely that how marijuana affects performance has a lot more to do with people on an individual basis. We know that [sexual systems in the body are facilitated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0024320512003049). We also know that the ECS varies from person to person. \n\nEventually, science will uncover more concrete answers for how marijuana affects sexual performance in men, but right now it’s still murky, and best for individuals to decide for themselves if cannabis helps or hurts them in this department.\n\n### Does Cannabis Lower Sperm Count? \n\nMarijuana almost certainly lowers sperm count in men. However, how much, and how important the problem is, is hard to determine. \n\nUnlike marijuana’s effects on sex drive and sexual performance, there’s much more consensus on how marijuana effects sperm count. One study from Denmark in 2015 found that [marijuana use could drop sperm count by 29%](https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/182/6/473/82600). The study even controlled for other factors that may contribute to lower sperm count. For example, people who consume marijuana are more likely to smoke cigarettes, which can also affect sperm count.\n\nWhile these results are noteworthy, they’re not totally definitive. This study is small enough that it’s possible random chance had more to do with sperm levels than any factors the researchers tested for. But, urologists unrelated to the Denmark study have noticed that [even occasional cannabis use can damage sperm](http://nationalpost.com/health/smoking-a-couple-of-joints-a-week-research-warns-it-may-make-sperm-more-mellow-and-swim-in-circles). \n\nIt’s important to note that [sperm counts have been falling in the western world for four straight decades](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/sperm-count-dropping-in-western-world/), and no one’s really sure why. A combination of factors including obesity, diet, lack of exercise and dozens of other things that researchers have looked at to explain the falling sperm counts exist for marijuana consumers, too. However, there’s a growing body of evidence that suggests cannabis lowers sperm count regardless of other environmental factors.\n\nFor men who use marijuana medically, it may be a good idea to consult with a urologist. These effects aren’t well understood, and it’s entirely possible further research will reverse these conclusions. But right now, the best evidence suggests cannabis has adverse effects on men’s sperm. \n\n### So, What Does This All Mean for Marijuana & Men’s Reproductive Health? \n\nIt’s unlikely male cannabis consumers will see a problem in having more sex. But for men looking to start families, it’s possible long-term marijuana use could cause some fertility problems in the future. \n\nFor medical consumers, how marijuana interacts with the body is a whole different ball game. Medical conditions also have adverse effects on sperm, so in that case, it’s possible marijuana is helping sperm count. \n\nWe all know marijuana can be a part of a healthy lifestyle. But for whole body health, it’s important to realize the limitations of cannabis. For men who are looking to start a family, or are experiencing sexual issues, marijuana could be equal parts problem and solution. In October 2017, a study in the _Journal of Sexual Medicine_ surprised some and affirmed what others have instinctually known: Cannabis likely fosters sexual activity—in the study, [regular cannabis users had 20% more sex than non-cannabis users did](https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2017/10/regular-marijuana-use-linked-to-more-sex.html). Indeed, sex and cannabis have an intimate relationship—one that dates back centuries. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Cannabis & Tantric Sex in India\n\nCannabis is strongly linked to Hindu culture in many ways—it’s been a traditional folk medicine in India since the fourth century BCE, and it’s still widely known as an aphrodisiac in that country. The plant was used in tantric sex and yoga practices associated with the goddess Kali as early as 700 AD. According to Michael Aldrich, who published a paper on tantric cannabis use in India, [the combination of yoga, sex and cannabis was a way for participants to achieve a spiritual awakening](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233211369_Tantric_Cannabis_Use_in_India). \n\nParticipants in the ritual would consume cannabis in the form of _bhang_, a preparation specific to India that consists of mashed-up cannabis leaves and flower rolled into a ball. In this ritual, other ingredients like almonds, pepper, cardamom and poppy could be added to the _bhang_ to make a type of milkshake or “victory drink” called _vijaya_. \n\nFolks consumed _vijaya_ about an hour and a half before ritual lovemaking so that the cannabis would have time to take full effect. According to the book [_Hemp and Spirituality_](https://books.google.com/books?id=w0qvkVGO0sgC&pg=PA95&lpg=PA95&dq=kali+goddess+cannabis+sex&source=bl&ots=DpWf0KJNSs&sig=3geJ7wRoX3Uk-YFovmrvz39Fqe0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiAj-nhsZLZAhUq4YMKHZd3BqAQ6AEIZTAO#v=onepage&q=kali%20goddess%20cannabis%20sex&f=false), tantric sex was about “oneness”—not necessarily about achieving orgasm.\n\nThus cannabis, which heightened the senses and induced euphoria was an essential part of the ceremony. The plant also enabled participants to be aroused for a much longer period of time—some manuscripts detailing these practices describe sexual rituals that lasted for as long as eight hours. \n\n### Cannabis Considered the Strongest Aphrodisiac in Eastern Europe\n\nWe don’t often associate Eastern European culture with cannabis, but people in this area of the world are also familiar with its healing and sensation-magnifying properties. For example, in Serbia, hemp is an important crop and has been used in folk medicine for centuries. Serbian men consider hemp seed to be an aphrodisiac—so much so that they believe wearing hemp can increase their sexual prowess. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS USERS HAVE MORE SEX](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1db9e4eea891000897e272/cannabis-users-have-more-sex)\n\nMeanwhile, in a 1975 paper, Polish anthropologist Sula Benet noted a mixture of lamb’s fat and _nasha_, which is a central Asian word for [hemp, was consumed by Soviet-Era Russian brides on their wedding nights to reduce pain from their first sexual encounters](http://www.xn--4dbcyzi5a.com/wp-content/PDF/EARLY-DIFFUSION-AND-FOLK-USES-OF-HEMP-SULA-BENET.pdf). \n\nSula also notes that Eastern Europeans cooked a “happy porridge,” which consisted of almond butter mixed with hashish, dried rose leaves, daisy root, carnation petals, crocus bulb, nutmeg, cardamom, honey and sugar. Apparently, this mixture was considered the luxury cannabis product of its time and sought out by men who believed it to be “the strongest aphrodisiac.” \n\n### Cannabis & the Viking’s Love Goddess Freya\n\nIn 1903, a farmer stumbled upon an ancient Viking Ship in Norway that contained many artifacts from the 800s AD. Among the artifacts were the skeletons of two women and a curious leather bag that contained cannabis seeds. \n\nThese seeds are thought to be connected to one of those women, known as the Oseberg Queen. Many archeologists, among them the prominent Anne Stine Ingstad, believe the woman was not just a secular queen but also a priestess of Freya, the love goddess of Norse mythology.\n\nAnne believed that the cannabis seeds were used in rituals during this pre-Christian period in Scandinavia. The book [_Cannabis: Evolution & Ethnobotany_](https://www.amazon.com/Cannabis-Evolution-Ethnobotany-Robert-Clarke/dp/0520292480) states that Freya was associated with hemp sowing and harvest festivals across northern Europe, and often times “erotic rituals” were held in her honor. It’s thought that the feminine cannabis flower had erotic and love-generating powers, and that those who consumed these flowers would be imbued with the joy and seductive tendencies of the love goddess. \n\n### Cannabis & Erectile Dysfunction in Uganda \n\nRarely is cannabis tied to male fertility and sexuality—in fact, some modern-day studies even suggest that cannabis use can lower testosterone in men, leading to a decreased sex drive. However, this isn’t the case in Uganda, where [cannabis has been a common remedy for erectile dysfunction for centuries](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1831906/), according to an article published in _African Health Sciences_. \n\nAlthough cannabis is technically illegal in Uganda, the authors of the study note that the plant is cultivated in the country for maintaining male sexual health, and that it’s usually smoked.\n\nCannabis’s aphrodisiacal properties have been known to humans for centuries, and its popularity in this context doesn’t seem to be waning: Companies like [Foria](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5760c7d0e4599e00070000d7/foria) and HerbaBuena have developed products for the bedroom that are sought after in the modern cannabis industry. As cannabis science progresses, perhaps it will confirm what many cultures around the world seem to have figured out on their own: that cannabis can and does enhance your sexual experience. \n\nPhoto credit: [henri meilhac](https://unsplash.com/@henrimeilhac)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Maybe your partner says sex is more enjoyable after they’ve taken marijuana. Maybe your best friend told you that cannabis is the only thing that gets their sex drive to even show up in the first place. \n\nYou’re not imagining these benefits when consuming cannabis. Now there’s a growing body of scientific research exploring marijuana’s effect on sex—and confirming what many already report anecdotally. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Stanford University Study: Cannabis Users Have 20% More Sex\n\nAn October 2017 [study conducted by Stanford University](https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2017/10/regular-marijuana-use-linked-to-more-sex.html) was published in the _Journal of Sexual Medicine_ and billed as the first “to examine the relationship between marijuana use and frequency of sexual intercourse.” \n\n\nThe study reveals a compelling association: Regular cannabis users have 20% more sex than non-cannabis users. The study is based on data collected in the annual National Survey of Family Growth, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The survey was particularly useful not only due to its large sample size, but because it included explicit questions about family structures, sexual practices and cannabis use. \n\nThe responses of more than 28,000 females and 22,000 males between the ages of 24–45 were evaluated. Women who reported daily cannabis use had sex with a male partner 7.1 times per month on average, compared to six times a month for non-cannabis users. Men who reported using cannabis daily also reported having sex with women 6.9 times on average per month, compared to 5.6 times for non-users. These results crossed over a wide range of demographics, including sex, race, age, education level, income, religion, overall health, marriage and parental status. \n\nResearchers also found what they call a “dose-dependent” relationship in which the more cannabis that was consumed, the more sex was reported. This finding supports “a possible active role for marijuana fostering sexual activity,” but falls short of proving a definitive causal relationship between cannabis use and more sex. \n\n### The Science Behind Cannabis as a Libido Booster\n\nWhy would cannabis consumers possibly have more sex than non-users? Is sex more enjoyable under the influence of cannabis? Does cannabis increase libido? \n\nThe findings from a 2012 study support the hypothesis that [“the endocannabinoid system is involved in female sexual function” and can heighten female’s sexual arousal](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/22462722/). \n\nIn a more casual and far from definitive look into cannabis and sex, [_Psychology Today_](https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/all-about-sex/201105/marijuana-and-sex-surprising-results-blogger-s-informal-survey) asked their readers how cannabis affects their sex life. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said cannabis use enhances their sexual experience. \n\nBeyond cannabis, an even wider body of research supports the hypothesis that regular sex has overall health benefits. These include:\n\n* [stress relief](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10508-006-9071-1), \n* [reduction in depression](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2996660/) \n* an [increase in brain power](http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0011597)—as studied in rats \n\n### Cannabis Products for a Boost in the Bedroom\n\nThe growing evidence regarding the relationship between cannabis and sex has inspired quite a few cannabis products. We’ve gathered some of the most popular questions we’ve received about marijuana and sex, with the answers below to give you some insight. \n\n### Q: How does marijuana enhance sex?\n\nAnswer: @KarinDirector Great question! Using cannabis as an aphrodisiac is an ancient tradition. Cannabis promotes relaxation and increased blood flow. THC is also known to positively affect cell receptors directly involved in tactile sensation and euphoria, and inhibit pain while allowing for more pleasant signals to be received by the brain.\n\n[Read more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/579fa349b5036e000b792a8e/how-does-cannabis-enhance-sex)\n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni7_jAgmzR0` \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Q: I've read that you can use a marijuana oil for women's sexual pleasure. Does this really work?\n\nAnswer: @DrEdmundsDoctor The good news is that THC is not harmful for the mucosal lining in the vagina, and women can and have used marijuana oil for the purpose of enhancing sexual pleasure. The oil typically comes in a spray bottle, which can be applied directly or by hand to the clitoris and outer and inner labia. Like most things, the results are mixed.

Those that notice an effect have described it as producing a tingly sensation. Some women have noted stronger orgasms and/or multiple orgasms while using this product. On the other hand, some women have experienced no effects whatsoever while using the product and even suggest that it’s \"bunk\" or a \"gimmick.\"

One complaint is that the patient is directed to wait 30 to 60 minutes prior to sexual activity for optimal effect, which affects spontaneity.

Also, latex is not compatible; so condoms may not be used.\n\n[Read more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/57463b709ac0410008000097/i-ve-read-that-you-can-use-a-marijuana-oil-for-women-s-sexual-pleasure-does-this-really-work)\n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7Dh7IZIn_k` \n\nRELATED: [Marijuana Increases Your Sexual Experience](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/587417bc2975c00008b040b1/marijuana-increases-your-sexual-experience)\n\n### Q: Is there any truth to marijuana negatively affecting sexual function in men?\n\n***My husband recently started using marijuana to help with the pain from an old football injury. He's 32 years old and I'm concerned that this will affect his sex drive/function because we are trying to get pregnant.***\n\nAnswer: @DrEdmonds\nSeveral studies have demonstrated that marijuana use decreases testosterone in men, which may lead to decreased sex drive, impotence and gynecomastia. Cannabis also decreases sperm count and sperm motility. Interestingly, there is an association between premature ejaculation and cannabis use.

Having said that, some men find that marijuana actually increases arousal and sex drive. These effects most likely occur with sativa dominant strains and THC.\n\n[Read more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/573677562d7c490008000001/is-there-any-truth-to-marijuana-negatively-affecting-sexual-function-in-men)\n\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
