When I was in my teens and 20s, I washed my face with whatever was on sale at the drug store; I rarely moisturized; I only wore sunscreen when I was at the beach; and I never took my makeup off before bed. \n\nNow that I’m older and hopefully wiser, I’m one of the millions who buys multiple skin care products a year to try to get my skin back to how even, firm and bright it was when I was younger. In the United States, skin care is big business, with the industry’s [2017 revenue estimated at just above 17 million dollars](https://www.statista.com/forecasts/758611/revenue-of-the-skin-care-market-worldwide-by-country). \n\nIn the quest for youthful skin, it turns out cannabidiol (CBD) may be the secret weapon. We’re just starting to understand how CBD works in the body, but we know it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors found pretty much everywhere in the body—including in the skin. \n\nWe know that [CBD has anti-inflammatory](https://www.hellolift.com/health-wellness/5bfde1e38053b8000799704e/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation) and antibacterial properties. This means CBD applied topically can help soothe red and inflamed skin. \n\nYou can also use CBD from the inside out to help you achieve youthful, supple and glowing skin. When you balance your ECS, your body can achieve homeostasis, which is key to a healthy body and healthy skin. And one way to balance your ECS is to introduce CBD into your daily routine. \n\nCBD contains vitamins:\n\n* A, which in certain forms can be an anti-inflammatory and also support the production of collagen \n* C, which helps protect against free radicals, and brightens and evens out skin tone \n* E, which moisturizes and helps reduce the appearance of scars, lines and other pigmentation \n\nSo, if you want your skin to appear more youthful, here are a few key skin concerns where CBD may help. \n\n### CBD Can Calm Red & Inflamed Skin \n\nWhile redness can strike anyone, if you have particularly sensitive skin, you probably have to deal with redness on a regular basis. There can be lots of different reasons why skin gets red, like:\n\n* Eczema\n* Rosacea\n* Dermatitis\n* Over-exfoliation\n* Sun damage\n* Inflammation\n\nNo matter what causes your redness, CBD can most likely help. If the underlying cause is a condition like rosacea, CBD can help balance your ECS, hopefully meaning fewer flare-ups in the future. \n\nIf underlying inflammation is why your skin goes red, [CBD helps curb inflammation](https://cbdstasis.com/cbd-inflammation-studies-summarized/). Studies show the cannabinoid seems to lessen inflammatory signals and gets in the way of proteins called cytokines. Cytokines signal to the body that something needs fixing. But too many cytokines result in excess inflammation, and is a marker in such conditions as arthritis and asthma. \n\nSo, a CBD topical could help soothe red skin, calming it and lessening inflammation. If you go this route, just be sure the product you choose doesn’t include other ingredients that may irritate your skin.  \n\nRELATED: [ALL ABOUT TOPICAL CBD & HOW IT SINKS INTO THE SKIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/all-about-topical-cbd-and-how-it-sinks-into-the-skin/)\n\n### Help Prevent Wrinkles & Ease Inflammation With a CBD Moisturizer\n\nSo, what does youthful skin not have? Wrinkles. And how do you prevent wrinkles? You moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. \n\nWrinkles are folds in the skin that develop as we age, because skin becomes dry, thin and unable to repair itself. Wrinkles can appear because of:\n\n* Smoking\n* Sun damage\n* Genetics\n\nThe most important thing you can do to prevent wrinkles, and keep your skin looking youthful and even, is to maintain a healthy level of moisture. \n\nSo, if you want to ensure your skin’s moisturized and smooth, picking a nourishing CBD oil to add to your skin care routine is a must. Choose a CBD oil where the cannabinoid is the first ingredient and the other ingredients are ones that will add extra moisture, but won’t irritate your skin.\n\nAnd moisturizing with CBD can do more than just make your skin appear more youthful. It may also be good for your health. Aging skin has an increased number of inflammation sites. And [high inflammation markers seem to be correlated with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/moisturizing-your-skin-may-help-prevent-age-related-diseases); moisturizing can help reduce these inflammation sites. And since CBD has proven anti-inflammatory properties, using a CBD-based moisturizer can help even more. \n\nYou can moisturize by patting a CBD oil directly onto your face (patting, instead of rubbing ensures more of the CBD makes it deep into your skin, instead of just wiping it around the top layer) or add a few drops of CBD to your favorite moisturizer to give it that extra boost. \n\n### CBD Can Help Restore Skin Firmness From the Inside Out\n\nWhile complexion, tone and wrinkles may be the first things you consider when it comes to youthful-looking skin, firmness is also an aspect of healthy skin that shouldn’t be overlooked. A firm, smooth surface is important to skin health and looking your best.\n\nSkin starts to lose firmness over time, and you may notice some sagging in areas around your jaw, eyes and neck. Skin sags, because it doesn’t have enough elastin and collagen.\n\n* **Collagen:** Collagen is a protein that makes your skin firm and flexible. Unfortunately, our bodies produce less and less collagen over time. \n* **Elastin:** Like the name suggests, elastin acts as an elastic, flexible fiber deeper in the skin. When elastin breaks down, skin isn’t able to snap back to where it was before being stretched, and so skin begins to sag. \n\nFree radicals, which can cause a host of bad health conditions, are also responsible for breaking down elastin in the skin. Luckily, CBD has antioxidant properties that can help fight these damaging compounds. \n\nIn addition to topical CBD, if you’re worried about the firmness of your skin, consider ingesting some CBD daily to help your body fight free radicals. This can also help balance your ECS to slow down the oxidative process. \n\nRELATED: [TAKING CBD TO BOOST YOUR BODY’S ANTIOXIDANT LEVELS](https://hellomd.com/articles/taking-cbd-to-boost-your-bodys-antioxidant-levels/)\n\n### Even Out Your Complexion With Vitamin C & CBD\n\nSun damage, acne scars, dark spots—they all add up to uneven skin tone. This can leave skin looking damaged, unhealthy and old. \n\nIf you look at the skin care products out there that claim to help even skin tone, you’ll see they almost all feature vitamin C. Vitamin C in most skin care products appears in the form of L-ascorbic acid. It’s a powerful antioxidant and can help even out skin tone.\n\nWe know that CBD contains vitamin C and is also a powerful antioxidant in its own right. So, a few drops of CBD oil mixed in with your vitamin C-rich serum will boost these vitamins to help brighten skin and fade dark spots. \n\nHopefully you’ve seen how CBD can help keep your skin bright, supple and youthful. But of course, CBD will work best as part of a holistic skin care regimen. In addition to CBD, don’t forget to:\n\n* Wear sunscreen daily.\n* Drink plenty of water.\n* Moisturize every day.\n* Eat a healthy diet.\n* Wash your face with your products of choice when you wake up and before you go to bed.\n\nWork all of this into your daily routine, and your skin will be looking as young as ever. \n\nPhoto credit: Ann Haritonenko/Shutterstock\n\nIf you want to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? I must admit, at first, I wasn’t a fan. If you have naturally oily skin like me, the thought of putting more oil on your face gives you nightmares about the skin issues you thought you’d left behind in high school. \n\nBut even if your skin is on the oily side, a good face oil can lock in moisture, which is particularly important during winter, and if you’re regularly exposed to sun and wind. It’s not the same kind of oil that clogs your pores. So if you use the right carrier oil for your skin, it won’t make you break out.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nA great way to get even more bang for your buck when it comes to a rehydrating oil is to add some hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil. CBD has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties so can help with red, dry and acne-prone skin. \n\n### Choose the Elements of Your CBD Face Oil Wisely\n\nBefore we get to the recipe, let’s talk ingredients. There are several ways to customize your CBD face oil to fit your skin’s needs, so you should consider all of the various options for each element of the oil:\n\n* **Carrier oil:** The carrier oil forms the base of your CBD face oil and will make up the bulk of your final product. You’ll want to choose an oil that targets your skin concerns. Some options are:\n\n * Coconut oil, which is a good choice if you have dry skin. \n * Caster oil is a great carrier oil if you’ve got acne-prone skin. \n * Argon oil not only moisturizes, but also provides sun protection. \n * Olive oil locks in moisture and has antioxidant properties.  \n\n* **CBD oil:** There are lots of CBD oils out there. First things first, make sure your CBD oil comes from hemp organically grown in either North America or Europe. Any oil with untraceable origins may be full of pesticides and other harmful ingredients that could wreak havoc on your skin. If you have particularly sensitive skin, choose a pure CBD oil without any added fragrances or essential oils.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN BUYING HEMP CBD OIL](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil/)\n\n* **Essential oils:** Speaking of essential oils, they’re something you can add to your CBD face oil for their pleasing aromas as well as some health-boosting effects. These health benefits are thanks to their terpenes. [Terpenes are oils secreted by a plant’s glands](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a99e9f4f24d1300077ccb6f/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch), and are responsible for their smell and taste. They also have wellness benefits of their own and by including them, you can amplify the benefits of your CBD oil. \n\n * Citrus essential oils contain the terpene [limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene/). Limonene will make your CBD oil smell fresh and fruity, and it will also boost the oil’s antibacterial properties. Limonene also has mood-boosting properties too, so your CBD oil can help put a smile on your face while it nourishes.\n * Lavender essential oils feature the terpene [linalool](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-linalool/). Linalool is a calming terpene, which can help with anxiety or even poor sleep. There’s a reason why so many products formulated to help people calm down and unwind smell like lavender. A CBD face oil with lavender would be a great option if you want to include your CBD face oil in your nighttime skin care routine as you get ready for bed.\n * An essential oil with the aroma of pine is full of the terpene [pinene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-terpenes-pinene/). Pinene not only smells fresh, but it’s also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antiviral properties. If you suffer from cold sores, pinene is the terpene to add to your CBD oil. \n\n### How to Make Your Rehydrating CBD-Infused Face Oil\n\n1. You’ll need a dropper bottle or another kind of small bottle with a regular or spray top. Try to use a glass bottle as this is not only more environmentally friendly than a plastic one is, but it will protect the ingredients better, too. A funnel will also be handy, but isn’t required. \n2. Take 2.5 oz of your carrier oil and pour it into your bottle. \n3. Add a few drops of your essential oil. Mix and smell to see if the aroma is strong enough for your liking. Add any extra drops slowly, smelling often. You could go up to as many as 25 drops.\n4. Next it’s time to add the CBD oil. You can adjust this as needed, but around 1/4 oz is a good amount.\n5. Mix well and shake before each use. \n\nPhoto credit: [Kristin Vogt](https://www.pexels.com/@kristingroth2)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/14b42/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/f836f/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/2244e/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 400w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/14b42/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 800w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/47498/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 1200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/0e329/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 1600w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/43576/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.jpg 3653w","srcWebp":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/58556/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/61e93/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/1f5c5/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 400w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/58556/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 800w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/99238/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 1200w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/7c22d/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 1600w,\n/static/6cab57174243d83e1ba16c4bad66c5a0/35449/064dbad15722763ed4245d14508faab4.webp 3653w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2845-markdown","title":"All About Topical CBD & How it Sinks Into the Skin ","slug":"all-about-topical-cbd-and-how-it-sinks-into-the-skin","content":"When people think about cannabis, they usually imagine someone smoking a joint or eating a pot brownie, not rubbing a non-psychoactive marijuana-infused lotion on their skin. But the cannabis space is changing rapidly, and using cannabidiol (CBD) topicals is a growing trend. \n\nWhile topical CBD can offer significant and targeted relief from pain, inflammation and skin irritation, one thing it won’t do is cause psychoactive effects, especially if it's made from hemp. So, it’s no wonder that more and more folks are switching over to this nonintoxicating and easy-to-use cannabis option. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is Topical CBD? \n\nTopicals are a form of cannabis that’s increasing in popularity. You may have come across some marijuana topicals that contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But the cannabis topicals that are available nationwide are made with hemp-derived CBD and virtually no THC. \n\nThese cannabis preparations are designed to be used on the skin, rather than eaten, smoked or vaporized. From simple lotions, creams, oils and balms to more inventive products like mud masks, there are many ways to apply CBD to the skin. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: KOREAN-STYLE CBD BRIGHTENING FACE MASK](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ba93c6028d6e8000971f82d/diy-recipe-korean-style-cbd-brightening-face-mask)\n\n### How Topical CBD Works\n\nCBD topicals work differently from other cannabis preparations, because the cannabinoids don’t make their way into the bloodstream. Instead, the cannabinoids are applied externally, where they’re able to permeate the skin. This allows the cannabinoids to access and activate specific receptors found in the body called CB2 receptors.  \n\nThere are CB2 receptors throughout the body, which can activate the body’s natural ability to regulate problems like pain and inflammation. The body produces chemicals called endocannabinoids that can activate the CB2 receptors. But phytocannabinoids—cannabinoids produced by plants—found in the cannabis plant can also regulate and alleviate imbalances in the body. CBD and THC are two such phytocannabinoids. \n\nWith most cannabis consumption methods like smoking, vaping or eating cannabis, the cannabinoids enter the bloodstream and affect the entire system. But topical marijuana application restricts the effects to the area it was applied. So rather than working systematically, topical applications let you focus in on a particular part of the body and concentrate the cannabinoids in one place. \n\nIt also means that you can’t get high from marijuana topicals, even if you apply ones that contain THC. Without the ability to enter the bloodstream, these topical cannabinoids won’t affect your mind.  \n\nThe one exception is cannabis transdermal patches; these patches are designed to permeate the bloodstream. But cannabis lotions, creams and balms do not. So, marijuana transdermal patches, which contain THC, could result in psychoactive effects. \n\n### How CBD Works Inside the Body\n\nOf course, taking CBD doesn’t make you feel high whether you use it topically or ingest it. Part of this is because of how CBD interacts with the body. Rather than bind directly to cannabinoid receptors like THC does, CBD interacts with an enzyme called fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). This enzyme breaks down and removes the natural endocannabinoids available to the body. \n\nBut CBD can actually stop this process of breaking down endocannabinoids. What this means is it helps preserve the naturally occurring endocannabinoids in our body. Since these endocannabinoids are a natural part of our system, they can help relieve various conditions from general pain to headaches. \n\n### How to Get Started With Topical CBD\n\nCurious about trying topical CBD for yourself? It’s easy to use and can help with a wide range of conditions and symptoms including:\n\n* Pain\n* Tension\n* Inflammation\n* Headaches\n* Cramps\n\nPerhaps the most common use for topical marijuana preparations is treating localized pain and tension from an injury or chronic pain site. Because individuals can focus the topical on the painful area, it’s an efficient and fast-acting delivery mechanism. CBD topicals give maximum cannabinoid exposure to the sprained, tense, bruised or otherwise tender or painful area, while not diverting critical cannabinoids to the rest of the body. \n\nTopical CBD can also bring relief to painful places by reducing inflammation. Whether the pain is from an injury or a chronic condition like arthritis, inflammation is often a major contributor. While the science is limited on topical CBD due to restrictions on researching cannabis, both patient anecdotes and the scientific data support the idea that topical CBD can help reduce inflammation. \n\nIn one study from the University of Kentucky, scientists showed that [locally applied CBD topicals could bring down inflammation and relieve pain for arthritic rats](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26517407).\n\nPatients also report helpful effects from using CBD topicals when dealing with skin issues like: \n\n* Psoriasis\n* Dermatitis\n* Itching\n* Skin tags\n\nRegular application seems to reduce these skin symptoms, and relieve the pain and irritation associated with them. This may be in part due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects. \n\nTo try using CBD topicals yourself, first find a [CBD topical](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Topicals) that’s well suited to your needs. There are a wide range of options, so consider factors just like when you’re choosing non-infused lotions and creams. \n\n* Do you like a [thick and heavily moisturizing product like a salve](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57979c02f1740001522ea9/cbd-topical-salve)?\n* Would you prefer something [lighter that won’t clog your pores like a spray](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57a81602f1740001522f82/relieve-pain-spray)? \n* Are you interested in a [product that’s scented](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5b57bc7802f17400015230d2/elevate-pour-de-corps-spray) for an aromatherapy experience, or do you prefer something unscented? \n\nOnce you’ve found an option that works for you, simply apply the topical to any external area of the body where you’re experiencing pain or inflammation, and wait for the pain relief to take effect. Depending on the person and the condition, it may take 1–48 hours to feel the effects of the CBD working.\n\nSo, if you find it doesn’t help you much at first, keep applying the CBD topical regularly over the next two days, and see if you notice a difference. The effects may not seem dramatic at first, but they can build over the coming days and weeks. Often patients won’t feel a difference to start off with, but will then notice small changes—like less pain—upon waking the next day. \n\nThankfully, CBD comes with very low risk of side effects, so it’s perfectly safe to experiment in this way. In fact, [CBD has been deemed safe, non-psychoactive, non-addictive and without any known negative side effects by the World Health Organization](http://www.who.int/medicines/access/controlled-substances/5.2_CBD.pdf).\n\nLet us know what your favorite CBD topical is in the comments below. \n\nPhoto credit: [Paulina Paukshtite](https://www.pexels.com/@kpaukshtite)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/14b42/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg","srcSet":"/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/f836f/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg 200w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/2244e/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg 400w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/14b42/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg 800w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/47498/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg 1200w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/0e329/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg 1600w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/b1563/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.jpg 3677w","srcWebp":"/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/58556/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/61e93/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp 200w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/1f5c5/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp 400w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/58556/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp 800w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/99238/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp 1200w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/7c22d/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp 1600w,\n/static/cd9ff476ee5dcf7a73858cc641921f19/0a913/8a31a260897475f5df443fbf911ef2eb.webp 3677w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2819-markdown","title":"Clean Beauty: Vertly’s Nourishing Hemp CBD Products","slug":"clean-beauty-vertlys-nourishing-hemp-cbd-products","content":"Can a high-powered fashion editor from New York easily transition into being a cannabis entrepreneur living in the woods of Northern California? If you ask Claudia Mata, she’d say, “Yes.” And she’s loving every minute of it.\n\nTwo years ago, Claudia and her native Californian husband Zander Gladish co-founded [Vertly](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5ba2a8ecac31ed429cd6395e/vertly), a luxury cannabis topicals brand that focuses on “clean beauty” and uses only the best-quality, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) in its lotion and lip balm formulations. Vertly has risen above, in a field of new CBD topicals, many of which don’t hold the same high standards for quality as Vertly does. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nClaudia states that “our goal in creating Vertly was to merge the natural healing properties of CBD with a line of plant-based, clean beauty products.” Vertly topicals focus on using “organically grown, hemp-derived, full-spectrum phytocannabinoids. Our products include an array of nourishing plant butters and slow-infused herbal oils, with each ingredient selected for its therapeutic benefits for the mind and body.”\n\nHelloMD sat down with Claudia (pictured below with Zander) to find out more about her family’s roots in cannabis farming; Claudia’s transition from New York fashion editorial to the California cannabis industry; and why Vertly uses hemp-derived CBD in its topicals. \n\n![Claudia Mata & Zander Gladish of Vertly](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-eb2d6910-c53f-4e54-996e-e7bf8a667e8c/original.png)\n\n### Before co-founding Vertly, your background included being a high-powered fashion editor in New York City, most recently with W magazine. You left that all behind to move to the West Coast and get into the cannabis industry. How has your transition been from the high-heeled New York fashion world to NorCal cannabis? \n\n**Claudia Mata:** My husband Zander grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so moving back seemed like a natural fit, especially after starting a family. We'd been living in New York for 15 years, and at the time we decided to leave, I was pregnant with our second baby. Marin County is stunning, and the lifestyle is so unique, we already knew that we wanted to raise a family here, even though we started having children in New York City.\n\nGoing from the fashion world into the cannabis industry doesn't seem like the most obvious transition. But Zander, who’s also my co-founder, has a family history in cannabis farming. His brother has his own cannabis farm, so this has always been a dinner topic for us. Conversations about starting Vertly came up naturally, especially as cannabis has become legal. Our family began talking about the implications of legalization and what an exciting time it is to land in this industry.\n\n### Vertly focuses on the hemp CBD topicals market, with your Relief Lotion, Body Lotion and Luscious Lip Butter. How did you make the decision to create these specific types of products? \n\n![Vertly Relief Lotion](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-76aea8de-4200-408d-afc2-fc240c223238/original.png)\n\n**CM:** When I started to look at getting into the cannabis industry, I was always looking for cannabis-based products that catered to someone like me and what my interests were. At the time, there seemed to be very few products that I was attracted to or that focused on clean beauty. So, I thought it would be interesting to merge luxurious, clean beauty products with cannabis. And that's how it came about. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS HEMP: THE NEW HOT BEAUTY ITEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5744aa24091a95000800011a/cannabis-hemp-the-new-hot-beauty-item)\n\n### How did the fashion world prepare you in any way for being in the cannabis industry?\n\n**CM:** Sometimes people think of those in the fashion industry as being flighty and superficial. And this is sometimes true, but not always. I will say for the fashion industry, that it’s a very competitive and interesting field to work within. Obviously, you not only need to be stylish and interested in that sort of thing, but you need to have excellent diplomacy skills at all levels, managing a variety of personalities, as you can imagine.\n\nI feel like it was great preparation for coming into the cannabis industry, because I became capable of dealing with all kinds of scenarios and also of pushing the envelope, seeing what I could do and needing to be extremely creative and jumping all in. It helped me to become fearless.\n\n### You’ve mentioned clean beauty, and you put a lot of emphasis on the overall quality of your products. How did this philosophy inform the creation of your hemp CBD beauty products? \n\n**CM:** I think of the creation and consumption of clean beauty products as similar to what happened with the food revolution. People over time have become aware and educated about how their food is being grown and what it actually does within your body.\n\nTo a lot of people, it was not so clear that beauty products have a similar effect to what you put into your body. Most beauty products are used externally and are absorbed through your skin, and your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on your body should have as much emphasis as what you put within your body.\n\nWhen I was pregnant with my first child, I took such great care with everything that I was doing. New mothers often will do that, hyper-naturally. You want everything that you expose your unborn child to be pure and clean and wonderful.\n\nThis just made me more aware of certain details within my own beauty routine that I wasn't really aware of before. For instance, I started to think about preservatives. There are ways to use organic oils to preserve your ingredients, rather than more toxic substances. I found cleaner ways to preserve beauty products that are actually good for your skin and your health, and gentler on the body in every way. I became obsessive about reading labels, and I still do that.\n\n### You mentioned that herbalism informed your formulation of Vertly products as well?\n\n**CM:** Yes, that’s true. Before my first pregnancy, I used to use a very expensive night cream all of the time, because I loved it. When I became more educated, I looked at the ingredients, and I was shocked. Many ingredients were horrible for your body. So, I started to really focus on the idea of clean, organic ingredients. When I finally moved to California, I started studying herbalism and how this might support our product development. \n\n### Why have you made hemp-derived CBD a cornerstone of the Vertly product line?\n\n**CM:** When I first started to use CBD within beauty, I saw the positive impact it might have within the industry and the consumers who use skincare products. Now that more studies are being done on the efficacy and positive therapeutic benefits of CBD, the more I think brands will incorporate it into their products. It’s also important to note that hemp-derived CBD is completely non-psychoactive.\n\nYou hear lot about it, and it’s kind of a fad, but I do think that if given the opportunity, it's something that will stand the test of time. CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory for instance, and that’s positive for most skin types across the board.\n\nCBD’s also good for acne, can help stimulate a more youthful appearance and is really great for bodily aches and pains, like lower back pain. It’s full of antioxidants and simultaneously can help with dry skin, eczema and even sunburns. CBD is an element that people will gain more understanding about and see that it's a natural plant-based element. \n\n### How much do you miss New York, and would you ever move back?\n\n**CM:** No, I don't think so. I'm really enjoying the Californian lifestyle, and what I’m doing within the cannabis industry. Also, where we live in Marin County, it's just so beautiful. Personally, I feel I can’t go a day without being full of gratitude for life, because when I drive, I see such beauty around me. I feel very balanced. You can get your city fix by going into San Francisco.\n\nBut to be honest, I do go back to New York frequently, as I still do a monthly page for _Elle Decor_. It’s a lot of fun.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3605442176870748,"src":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/14b42/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg","srcSet":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/f836f/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/2244e/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 400w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/14b42/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 800w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/47498/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 1200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/0e329/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 1600w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/15009/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.jpg 3997w","srcWebp":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/58556/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/61e93/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/1f5c5/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 400w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/58556/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 800w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/99238/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 1200w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/7c22d/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 1600w,\n/static/de5744a875487674892a41fb96acf571/ca1e9/a32e2bc626431736417e3b194f7f633a.webp 3997w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2771-markdown","title":"Beauty Inside & Out: Verte Essentials Hemp Botanicals","slug":"beauty-inside-and-out-verte-essentials-hemp-botanicals","content":"Designed to create beauty on the inside as well as the outside, [Verte Essentials](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5b75dcd504458900013470bf/verte-essentials) is the brainchild of Blair Lauren Brown, who’s also the founder of a successful fine jewelry collection that celebrates nature and a commitment to sustainability. We decided to go that route, because we realized that there's a large segment within this marketplace that we could tap into with hemp-derived CBD (cannabidiol). At the time we conceived of Verte Essentials, there really wasn’t anything of quality that we saw within the marketplace. We saw an opportunity to provide access to CBD topicals focused on the wellness and beauty aspect.\n\nWe launched with beauty topicals, such as our facial crème Rose de Soie and our Esprit de Rose facial mist, knowing that we could work into the edible market. Our philosophy is that beauty is inside and out, but it starts from within. Every solution within our product line is meant to create beauty on the inside, but will also show on the outside.\n\nWhen you look at a Verte Essentials product, it feels beautiful on the skin; it smells beautiful; it looks beautiful as a package on your shelf; and overall it makes you feel fabulous. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS HEMP: THE NEW HOT BEAUTY ITEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5744aa24091a95000800011a/cannabis-hemp-the-new-hot-beauty-item)\n\n### What different types of beauty products do you create?\n\n**BLB:** The base ingredient in all of our products is CBD derived from high-quality hemp. CBD is now well known for reducing body inflammation, and it’s also excellent at reducing skin inflammation. As a brand within the beauty industry, we’re largely addressing anti-aging, topical skin inflammation of all different kinds and helping decrease redness and promote even skin tone. Our end goal has always been to create a skin care line that addresses those issues successfully. \n\nBeyond reducing skin inflammation, our product line includes everything from a face lotion, Rose de Soie, that’s soothing and has other efficacious ingredients like cell peptides, which help increase collagen production.\n\nWe also have our Micellar H2O Facial Pads, which act as an exfoliant as well as a deep cleanser. We offer facial skin oils in a variety of experiences as well as facial and skin mists. For people using our H2O pads, we’ve seen a reduction in acne and other breakouts. We also offer oil-based topicals that may be used like a serum, and those come in a variety of different experiences. \n\nWe also developed our Luxe Soaks, based on the philosophy of Japanese baths in mind, which are meant to address deep muscle fatigue. Our soak includes CBD, but are also Epsom salt, which has high levels of magnesium. We also have added Himalayan sea salt, which is wonderful as a mineral addition to your skin and emptier to your bloodstream. This—plus a whole host of other botanicals and essential oils—is relaxing and calming to the body. \n\n### Do you include terpene profiles in your hemp-based products? \n\n**BLB:** Absolutely. Terpenes, I think are one of the opportunities that we've taken advantage of that we're not seeing anywhere else in the marketplace. Terpenes are amazing oils that all plants and all plant matter contain. Terpenes and flavonoids also help create the overall  experience. We talk about terpenes within cannabis marijuana, but they also exist within the cannabis hemp plant, where we get our CBD.\n\nTerpenes create different experiences, such as when you smell mint or a lemon peel or lavender. Terpenes are what are responsible for that incredible aromatherapy experience. At Verte Essentials, we're taking terpenes from within a whole-plant spectrum and combining them with other beneficial aspects for multi-plant synergy. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS TERPENES PACK A THERAPEUTIC PUNCH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a99e9f4f24d1300077ccb6f/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch)\n\n### How did you end up in the beauty industry making products from hemp-derived CBD?\n\n**BLB:** My brother and I have decided to do this together. My brother has run an organic cannabis farm for many years in both California and Oregon. I came to him two years ago with a realization that there was an untapped marketplace and that we had the opportunity to share our breadth of knowledge across a diversity of different industries.\n\nWe decided at that point to get into cannabis products, and I started testing and playing with the formulations from my alchemist background. After testing formulations, we saw that CBD was all we needed to be able to create the products that we were interested in. It had everything that we wanted, right there in front of us.\n\nWe actually saw THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) as an inhibitor for market entry. CBD derived from hemp was far more approachable with all of the benefits and provided a better comfort level for those new to CBD.\n\n### Any advice to those consumers who are new to hemp-derived CBD? How should they proceed in choosing a product that’s both safe and has efficacy?\n\n**BLB:** My advice always is to trust your gut. I also believe that a consumer should look for the most natural product out there. Look at the ingredients really thoroughly for clarity in origin and production. \n\nLike anything you put in or on your body, such as a beauty topical, it’s absolutely imperative that these things are natural, because they—like anything else—can be afflicted by GMO (genetically modified organisms), and bad soil, improper fertilization and pesticides. Lately, I’ve been thinking of exploring CBD topical creams for aging skin, so I asked several women about their experiences with CBD topicals.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Women Love Their CBD Topicals\n\nCBD topicals are typically creams, lotions, oils, ointments and salves. There are many to choose from in places where cannabis is legal, but Marie Peterson in Wyoming makes her own.\n\n“It helps my skin with breakouts due to hormonal changes and moisturizes for super-soft skin,” says Marie. She adds that in addition to helping her reduce skin irritations, CBD topicals have the added benefit of relieving underlying pain. Another bonus for Marie is that the CBD topicals help her grandson address his eczema better than the medications he was prescribed.\n\nCamille Ritchie in Vancouver says she uses a CBD-infused coconut oil on her face to treat eczema and for its anti-aging properties. She’s also using it to protect against another major cause of aging skin: the sun.\n\n“I’m trying [my CBD-infused coconut oil] as a sunscreen and after-sun treatment,” Camille explains. “I’m hoping it will help diminish dark spots too, but we shall see.”\n\nCamille says she saw fast, impressive results from the CBD topicals on her eczema and is waiting to see how well they help her on the aging skin front.\n\nWendy Pagaduan, founder of Clean Coconut Skincare & Wellness, points out that CBD—and the cannabis plant overall—is “packed full of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids, all of which encourage skin health.” Antioxidants may prevent or delay certain types of cell damage and can be found in foods and plants, including many fruits and vegetables. \n\nAccording to Wendy, CBD is also moisturizing and can reduce the itching that comes with dry skin. And she, too, mentioned how CBD topicals are effective for eczema as well as a natural way to treat other skin conditions.\n\n### Doctors Weigh In on CBD Topicals for Skin Issues\n\nI turned to a naturopath for a bit more about the skin-healing properties of CBD.\n\n“CBD is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, so it could help with inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis as well as acne,” says Dr. Elaine M. Burns of Southwest Medical Marijuana Evaluation Center. \n\nElise Ho in Southern California holds two doctoral degrees, one in naturopathic psychology and the other in natural health. She uses a CBD-based anti-aging cream and is impressed with the results.\n\n“CBD does amazing things for your skin,” says Elise, echoing that it has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can help with acne and dry skin. “It can also help with the overall balance of your endocannabinoid system [when consumed],” she says. Achieving balance, or homeostasis, is paramount to maintaining a healthy body. \n\n### Quick Tips on Using CBD Topicals\n\nAny CBD product you choose will only be as good as its ingredients and manufacturing process. As with any skincare product, particularly for anti-aging, beware of exaggerated claims about what the product will do for you. Shop around for a reasonably priced product, but know that CBD topicals can be pricey, in the $50–100 range for a small container.\n\nWhen looking for a CBD topical, also consider the following:\n\n* Hemp-derived CBD products are the easiest to obtain and ship, but may not be as effective as whole-plant CBD topicals. Still, they're a great option for people living in states without marijuana laws on the books. \n\n* Check the other ingredients in your CBD topical to ensure you aren’t sensitive to anything else in the product.\n\n* Start by applying the CBD product to a small patch of skin, and wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction. If you do, don’t apply further and seek out another product. CBD itself should not be reactive, but there’s no guarantee of this.\n\n* Store CBD products in a place with a stable temperature and away from extreme light, heat or moisture. You can also store CBD products in the refrigerator. Depending on the carrier substance—such as coconut oil—it might solidify when cold, but return to its original consistency at room temperature.\n\nBecause of the legal issues surrounding cannabis and CBD, make sure you know the difference between hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD products with THC. While many people say “hemp-derived CBD is legal everywhere,” that’s not entirely accurate. It’s critical to know the law in your area as there’s some confusion around what you can order online depending on where you live. \n\nPhoto credit: [Marivi Pazos](https://unsplash.com/@marivi)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/14b42/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg","srcSet":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/f836f/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/2244e/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 400w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/14b42/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 800w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/47498/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 1200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/0e329/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 1600w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/6995d/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 3637w","srcWebp":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/58556/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/61e93/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/1f5c5/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 400w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/58556/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 800w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/99238/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 1200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/7c22d/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 1600w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/2a59d/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 3637w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2710-markdown","title":"How Cannabis Can Help Treat & Prevent Dry, Chapped Skin","slug":"how-cannabis-can-help-treat-and-prevent-dry-chapped-skin","content":"Being windswept looks good in photos, but rarely feels good. Think about how much the wind and other elements affect our outer layer; chapped leather lips and scaly skin come to mind. Luckily, research shows that cannabis can significantly boost skin health, especially by alleviating itchy, flaky red skin and protecting skin from harmful environmental factors. \n\nCannabis is also a powerful internal healing agent for skin conditions like eczema, acne and dry, itchy skin. Studies have shown that marijuana [helps suppress inflammatory responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/), which sometimes manifest in these types of skin conditions.\n\nBut how do cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) in order to help dry skin heal? And what’s the best way to incorporate marijuana into a healthy skin regimen? \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Activate Your Endocannabinoid System to Moisturize From the Inside Out \n\nOur skin needs oils to remain healthy. But as we get older, we produce less collagen—[1% less every year starting at age 20](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-does-skin-wrinkle-wit/)—and major oil-producing glands shrink in size. This means we gradually lose the natural capacity to produce as much nourishing oil, or lipids, as our skin needs. \n\nSebaceous glands—the ones that secrete those oils to hydrate and protect skin—are supported when the ECS is activated. And one way to activate and balance the ECS is by supplementing our natural endocannabinoid production with cannabinoids from the marijuana plant. A National Institutes of Health Study confirms that [CB2 cannabinoid receptors are key places for lipid generation and secretion](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18596221).  \n\nSpeaking of good oil, cannabis—and the plant’s seeds—is also packed with [omega 3s and 6s](https://www.byrdie.com/cannabis-weed-skincare), other fatty acids and proteins. This triad of nutrients hydrates skin by keeping cell membranes healthy. Cell membranes are important, because they’re responsible for blocking bad compounds from getting in and allowing nourishing compounds into cells.  \n\n### Marijuana’s Antioxidant Properties Protect the Skin\n\nAntioxidants help:\n\n* Keep skin healthy\n* Prevent aging  \n* Neutralize free radicals \n\nFree radicals are chaotic molecules that wreak havoc throughout the body, but particularly impact skin health. Free radicals are inside us, but they also come in the form of UV rays from the sun. Through its rich antioxidant properties, cannabis can protect the skin from wear and tear caused by the external environment. \n\nScientists have known for at least 20 years that [cannabidiol (CBD) is a more powerful antioxidant than vitamins E and C, while tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also has antioxidant properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC20965/). \n\nIn other words, cannabinoids prevent skin from getting chapped and dry in the first place and can also heal parts of the body that have already been affected.  \n\n### Smoke Harms Skin, So Go for a Cannabis Topical\n\nEven though marijuana has many beneficial aspects, one negative issue remains: Smoke is an irritant. Like tobacco, cannabis smoke irritates and dries out your skin—especially around facial areas—because it decreases the oxygen your skin needs. Smoking cannabis to relieve dry skin can actually lead to dry skin formation (and exacerbate acne). \n\nSo if you’re looking for relief from dry, chapped skin, your best bet is a marijuana topical cream or oil that can be applied to the affected areas. You can also use cannabis vaporizers, edibles and tinctures as an additional way to ingest the cannabinoids that are beneficial to skin health. \n\nWith marijuana topicals, cannabinoids are absorbed into the top layers of the skin, but aren’t absorbed into the bloodstream. This means they have little to no psychoactive effects and are best used for localized relief on a specific body part. You also want to look for a CBD-rich marijuana topical, because of CBDs anti-inflammatory properties and how it interacts with CB2 receptors, which we know are responsible for lipid production. \n\nRELATED: [USING CANNABIS-INFUSED TOPICALS FOR LOCALIZED RELIEF](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a70b886f24d1300077ccb22/using-cannabis-infused-topicals-for-localized-relief)\n\n### Our Favorite Cannabis Topical for Dry Skin\n\n* **Dr. Kerklaan’s Natural Skin Cream:** [Dr. Kerklaan's Natural Skin Cream](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5abc05461bb06d0008614073/natural-skin-cream) can help reduce skin irritation, inflammation and immune reactions. Here's our quick guide for navigating the summer heat and using cannabis topicals as your weapon of choice.\n\n### Sunburn\n\nWhether you are determined to get a few shades darker this season or simply enjoy midday hikes - you’re bound to get a little scorched under the blazing sun. It’s important to use an after-sun product like aloe vera gel to neutralize the heating effects of the sun’s rays. If you’ve had a bit too much sun, using a cannabis topical can help your skin recover quickly, so you can get back to enjoying the sunshine. Try this SweetHack: apply a little Sweet ReLeaf right out of the shower to maximize penetration.\n\n### Acne Spots\n\nSweating the heat? Perspiration often prompts an increase in blemishes. Whatever your go-to acne treatment is, its important to not only deal with the clogged pore but also the inflammation and infection it causes. Dab a little Sweet ReLeaf on before bed to help the swelling go down. THC has incredible anti-bacterial properties and can help bring down the intensity of a blemish so it’s not so obvious.\n\n### Eczema\n\nEczema affects over 30 million Americans. During the summer time, this condition can be especially pesky as skin becomes increasingly itchy and inflamed from sun exposure. Use a THC-infused topical and apply directly to problem areas. Some users of this method have even reported a complete reversal in persistent eczema breakouts. \n\n### Razor Burn\n\nYou’re probably shaving a little more often this season. According to WebMD, most methods of hair removal will irritate the skin and cause hair bumps, rashes, and skin that is extra sensitive to light and heat. To help irritation disappear and skin recover faster, apply a cannabis topical to the area. Be sure to wait at least 4 or 5 days after hair removal before applying a cannabis topical to ensure the area has sufficiently healed first. \n\n### Bug Bites\n\nSun seekers aren’t the only ones coming out in larger numbers during the summer. There’s also an increase in mosquitoes and other blood-thirsty insects ready to nibble up our bare shoulders and legs. If you want to try an alternative to the typical anti-itch cream, use a topical cannabis product high in THC. THC is a proven antihistamine that can decrease allergic reactions, stop the itch and soothe inflamed skin all in one go.\n\nDo you have questions about Sweet ReLeaf? Sweet ReLeaf has created one of the most effective and enjoyable topicals on the market today. Didi states \"We believe in the healing power of plants, specifically how the human endocannabinoid system communicates with the compounds found in Cannabis. We like to call it ‘Intelligent Medicine.’\" In her second blog post, Didi talks about different skin conditions and how cannabis topicals may have a positive effect.\n\n### Can Skin Influence our Immune System?\n\nWeighing in at over 8 lbs and covering up to 23 square feet, the skin is the largest, as well as one of the most important, organs in the human body.\nOur skin protects our body from the outside world, pieces us together, and recent studies have even suggested that skin can help control our immune system. People coping with chronic skin conditions understand the value of healthy skin. Though most conditions cannot be cured or prevented - they can be managed.\n\n### From Traditional to Alternative\n\nFor the most part, people will turn to their dermatologist for help. They’ll then likely be prescribed costly medications which often do more harm than good. Accutane, a common treatment for acne, can lead to birth defects and even Crohn's disease. This is one of the many reasons why cannabis has become the growing preference for dealing with chronic skin conditions. \n\nCannabis topicals are an excellent alternative for people who want to get the therapeutic, medicinal benefits of cannabis without \"getting high.\" \nTopical cannabis is a great way to relieve common symptoms and triggers associated with chronic skin conditions, such as:\n\n>- Inflammation\n- Itching and burning\n- Pain\n- Infections\n- Acne\n- Bug bites\n- Scrapes and wounds\n\nIt’s important to understand how cannabis treatments can help alleviate and even cure the most common chronic skin conditions. \n \n### Eczema, Psoriasis and Cannabis\n\nEczema is brought on by a strained immune system which then causes an overreaction in the skin. Affecting over 30 million Americans, eczema is can be triggered by a variety of things, including stress, hormonal changes and even dehydration.\n\nPsoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects around 8 million Americans. More severe cases of Psoriasis may require special systemic therapies, but nearly all Psoriasis sufferers take some type of topical treatment to ease the side-effects.\n\n**The Solution:**\nUse a medical cannabis topical butter or hemp oil regularly and you will notice that your condition will begin to subside. Use a topical that also has additional ingredients which support skin moisture such as coconut oil, shea butter and essential oils. Results will vary but patients have been singing the praises of topical cannabis as even the most debilitating cases transform into non-issues. \n\n### Acne\n\nNo matter your age or station in life, acne is probably at least an occasional part of your reality. Whether chronic or stress-induced, blemishes often appear on our face right when it’s the “last thing we need.” Approximately 85% of Americans will have to cope with acne outbreaks at least once in their life. When we do, we go to great lengths to get rid of it. Accounting for over $2 billion in sales, the business of zit-zapping is booming. Alleviating acne by way of cannabis allows patients to avoid the side-effects that come with the most commonly prescribed treatments. Experts have found that applying topical cannabis treatments to the affected area can decrease inflammation, redness and shrink the size of the blemish (as well as reduce scarring). \nDiDi Davis is Founder of [Sweet ReLeaf](https://getsweetreleaf.com/), a topical cannabis manufacturer located in California. Sweet ReLeaf has created one of the most effective and enjoyable topicals on the market today which is creamy and smells wonderful. As Didi says \"We believe in the healing power of plants, specifically how the human endocannabinoid system communicates with the compounds found in Cannabis. We like to call it ‘Intelligent Medicine.’\" In her first blog post, Didi talks about the healing relief found when using topicals and whether or not to worry about drug testing.\n\n**The Solution:**\nDrink plenty of water and apply a topical cannabis treatment to your blemish before bed. Be warned that smoking cannabis, could actually lead to further breakouts, so avoid it until your blemish has subsided.\n\n### Rosacea\nEven though over 16 million Americans suffer from Rosacea, topical cannabis is seldom brought up when mentioning the condition. Rosacea causes bouts of skin flare-ups that make affected areas very dry, red and itchy. Most common among those with fair skin, Rosacea exclusively affects the facial area (cheeks, nose, chin and around the eyes) - and is not easily covered up.\nThere is no definitive cure for Rosacea, but it is another example of a severe skin condition which is directly affected by one’s immune system. It's asserted by medical professionals that Rosacea flare-ups are caused by hereditary problems that erupt between the body's immune response and its inflammatory pathways. \n\n**The Solution:**\nLike the other major skin conditions, inhaling cannabis will produce little to no positive benefits for Rosacea sufferers. Instead, use a cannabis-infused topical and apply regularly over a consistent period of time. This is also a good time to bulk up on healthy fats (such as coconut oil, avocado and almonds) to help support hormonal balance - another key factor in what triggers Rosacea outbreaks.\n\n### When The Whole Body Hurts\n\nIt’s important to remember that our body is one big machine and every part of it is affected when things get off-balance. Our skin is a great “caution cone” for understanding our own level of health. We are naturally linked to cannabis through our endocannabinoid system and this incredible plant seems to always know just what we need. Cannabis brings balance and healing where other medications would simply bulldoze our bodies into submission. \n\nBe smart about your overall health. When skin conditions arise, understand that it is actually the entire body which is trying to tell you something. \n\nConsider assessing daily activities, diet, level of exercise and sleep routine to support the overall benefits of medical cannabis. Whether your skin condition is curable or requires lifelong management - the point is not to fix the problem, but to help the body heal.\n\nPhoto credit: Geinz Angelina/Shutterstock.com","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/14b42/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg","srcSet":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/f836f/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/2244e/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 400w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/14b42/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 800w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/47498/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 1200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/0e329/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 1600w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/54511/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 1711w","srcWebp":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/58556/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/61e93/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/1f5c5/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 400w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/58556/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 800w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/99238/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 1200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/7c22d/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 1600w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/6abdf/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 1711w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":1,"currentPage":1,"id":5745,"name":"Skin Care","slug":"skin-care","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
