This living collection of beneficial flora is called the skin microbiome, and it's an essential part of the body's defenses. \n\nThe skin biome is a relatively recent discovery, and scientists are still working to understand its secrets. But research is now revealing that cannabinoid compounds such as CBD can play a significant role in keeping our skin flora healthy, thanks to the many cannabinoid receptors found in the tissues of the skin.\n\n### Inside the Skin Microbiome\n\nHuman cells make up just 43 percent of the total cell count in the human body. The rest consists of microbes. They [form multiple biomes](https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/26/the-human-microbiome-why-our-microbes-could-be-key-to-our-health), or colonies of hundreds or thousands of different strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi and strange organisms called archaea. \n\nThe best known and most thoroughly researched microbiomes is the gut biome, a complex colony of bacterial strains that process food for nutrients, maintain healthy digestion, and support the immune system.  Other biomes exist on our bodies. These include the mouth and vagina, and they're now studied for their effects on human health.\n\n\nRecently, the skin microbiome has captured researchers' attention in fields as diverse as neurobiology and cosmetics. That's because [the skin is the body's first defense](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-23996/your-skin-microbiome-why-its-essential-for-a-healthy-glow.html) against external assaults such as toxins, allergens, wounds, and infectious agents such as hostile bacteria and viruses. \n\nWe now know overexposure to sunlight can damage the skin's protective microbiome. Sun exposure can cause wrinkles, keratosis, and even the dangerous skin cancer melanoma.\n\nThe skin's microbiome [shares some features of the gut microbiome](https://goop.com/wellness/health/the-good-skin-healthy-gut-guide-to-probiotics/), suggesting a relationship that has profound implications for immune system functioning and mood regulation.  \n\nFor example, stress can cause digestive distress and also skin breakouts, and so can responses to some allergens and toxins. Likewise, improving the diet and avoiding certain triggering foods can also improve skin health. Researchers have also uncovered relationships between mood, skin health, and obesity.\n\nThe skin microbiome is more than skin-deep, too. Its beneficial bacteria and other organisms are also found in the skin's deeper layers, down to the subcutaneous fat layer that protects the muscles and bones.  \n\nLike other biomes, the skin microbiome has multiple functions. Along with protecting the skin itself from invaders, a healthy skin biome also contributes to cell turnover, supports immune responses, and reduces inflammation.  \n\nBut this important biome can also be compromised by factors such as stress, illness, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Dehydration can also affect the skin biome, causing the skin to dry out and reducing the amount of sebum, or oil, that some strains of skin bacteria need to survive.  \n\n### Keeping the Skin Microbiome Healthy\n\nUnder many circumstances, the state of someone's skin is a window into the state of their overall health. And many skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and eczema can be improved or worsened by other factors that affect general health.\n\nIn general, keeping the skin's multifaceted microbiome healthy is no different than taking steps to promote overall health.  A high-quality diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils such as olive oil and avocados can nourish the skin. \n\nDrinking plenty of water can also help keep the skin hydrated and promote sebum production, so that the skin looks plump and soft.  Sleep can also support the skin microbiome and prevent \"bags\" and dark circles under the eyes.\n\nNew knowledge about the workings of the skin microbiome has also fueled the production of several skin product lines that use recent research to guide the development of serums, creams, and other treatments for smoother, softer skin.\n\nBut recent research also reveals that cannabis compounds such as CBD can also promote a healthy skin biome because they work with the body's system of cannabinoid receptors – the endocannabinoid system.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Supports the Skin Microbiome\n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of cell receptors that respond to cannabinoid compounds. These compounds called endocannabinoids, are naturally produced by the body. But these receptors can also be activated by cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly compounds found in the cannabis plant.  \n\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or balance, among the body's many subsystems. It supports many processes related to regulating mood, supporting the immune system, and protecting cell health. Cannabinoid receptors are found in tissues throughout the body – and they occur abundantly in the skin.\n\nJust as the endocannabinoid system as a whole helps to support homeostasis in the body as a whole, the skin's system of endocannabinoid receptors [work to keep the skin's microbiome and tissues healthy](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6429381/) and free of inflammation.  \n\nWhen this system, which some researchers have called the \"cutaneous cannabinoid system,\" doesn't function properly, skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can develop or flare-up.  Healthy habits such as exercise and plenty of sleep can help the body to produce its own cannabinoids. But, you can give the ECS, and the skin microbiome, a boost with cannabis and a variety of cannabis-infused skin products.\n\n### How to Support the Skin With Cannabinoids\n\nThe endocannabinoid system supports immune functioning and helps to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Consuming cannabinoid compounds such as cannabidiol, or CBD, in any form can help to reduce inflammation and irritation on the skin.   For example, cannabis oils, tinctures, and edibles can [reduce the redness and swelling of psoriasis and eczema](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-cbd-thc-and-cbg-may-relieve-psoriasis-symptoms), and research shows that [CBD can be an effective treatment for acne](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-fight-acne).\n\nBut many new skincare lines are offering [topical products](https://www.wellandgood.com/cannabis-skin-care-cbd-anti-inflammatory-beauty-products/) that contain CBD isolates or full-spectrum cannabis oil, which contains all the compounds and terpenes found in the cannabis marijuana plant.   Many CBD-infused products are derived from hemp, a variant of the cannabis plant that 0.03% of THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabiniol) or less.\n\nThese cannabis-enriched skincare products include serums, creams, lotions, and even CBD-infused lip balm. \nThey [help balance the skin's microbiome](https://www.hyperbiotics.com/blogs/recent-articles/inside-look-hemp-extract-and-the-microbiome) and activate endocannabinoid receptors in the skin's upper layers to reduce inflammation and irritation from unhealthy bacteria collected in pores and hair follicles.  \n\nIf you'd like to give cannabis-infused skin products a try, look for products with all-natural ingredients and no harmful chemicals, and make sure that cannabis or CBD is high on the ingredient list.  \n\nThe skin is the body's first line of defense, and the many inhabitants of the skin microbiome work hard to keep it healthy. Now, a large and growing list of cannabis-based cosmetics and skin treatments can boost the power of the biome and keep skin looking its best.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/ee604/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png","srcSet":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/69585/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/497c6/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 400w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/ee604/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 800w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/f3583/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 1200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/49ccb/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 1426w","srcWebp":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/58556/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/61e93/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/1f5c5/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 400w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/58556/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 800w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/99238/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 1200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/68892/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 1426w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3063-markdown","title":"Cannabinoids CBD, THC & CBG May Relieve Psoriasis Symptoms","slug":"cannabinoids-cbd-thc-and-cbg-may-relieve-psoriasis-symptoms","content":"Psoriasis is a chronic condition that [affects over 125 million people worldwide](https://www.psoriasis.org/content/statistics), including about 8 million Americans. \n\nThis mysterious skin disorder has several forms, but a rapid buildup of too many new cells on the surface of the skin is what causes all types of psoriasis.  \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nStandard psoriasis treatments can have serious side effects, but research shows that [cannabis compounds like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) can slow the growth of the young skin cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3628749/) that cause typical psoriasis symptoms like scaly, red patches on various parts of the body.\n\n### What Is Psoriasis?\n\nPsoriasis is an [autoimmune disorder](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/psoriasis/symptoms-causes/syc-20355840). It’s one of many health conditions in which the body’s immune system attacks its own healthy cells and tissues. \n\nNormally, the immune system works to protect the body from injuries and invaders like viruses and bacteria. But in autoimmune disorders, the body’s fighters—T-cells and other white blood cells called neutrophils—are maladaptive, meaning they target healthy cells instead of actual threats to the body.  \n\nIn psoriasis, this maladaptive immune system response [stimulates abnormal growth in a specific kind of skin cell called a keratinocyte](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11348449). These cells make up more than 90% of the cells in the epidermis, the outer layer of skin.  \n\nKeratinocytes form deep in the skin’s inner layer, also called the basal layer, and they normally work to heal the skin after an injury and provide protection from threats such as infection and the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. \n\nThe normal life cycle of a keratinocyte covers several weeks:\n\n* First, new cells form in the basal layer. \n* Then, they migrate through intermediate skin layers to the surface, where they eventually flake off as dead cells. \n\nBut when a person has psoriasis, the T-cells and other cells of the immune system go into overdrive, and the cycle accelerates.\n\nWhen overactive immune cells target healthy skin cells instead of damaged or infected ones, the life cycle of keratinocytes happens in the course of days, not weeks. \n\nT-cells and neutrophils stimulate these new keratinocytes and they form very quickly, as if to heal a wound or to fight a virus. As they build up, these new keratinocytes are constantly pushed to the surface, where they create the silvery, scaly patches that are the most visible symptom of psoriasis.\n\nThis isn’t the only symptom of psoriasis, though. Other symptoms can include:\n\n* Dry, cracked skin that can bleed\n* Itching, burning or sore skin\n* Thick, ridged or pitted nails\n* Flushed, red areas on the skin\n* Stiff and swollen joints\n* Depression and anxiety\n\nIt’s possible to have multiple psoriasis symptoms, or to experience isolated episodes when symptoms flare up. And different types of psoriasis cause different combinations of symptoms, too. \n\nTypical kinds of psoriasis include:\n\n* **Plaque psoriasis:** This manifests with the typical symptoms of scaly red patches on the skin.\n* **Nail psoriasis** This kind of psoriasis affects the finger and toenails.\n* **Inverse psoriasis** The main symptoms of inverse psoriasis causes smooth red patches of inflamed skin. \n* **Pustular psoriasis:** This is a relatively rare variety of psoriasis that causes large, pus-filled eruptions.\n* **Erythrodermic psoriasis:** Sufferers of erythrodermic psoriasis deal with a red, peeling rash that covers the body.\n* **Psoriatic arthritis:** Along with skin inflammation and scaling, psoriatic arthritis also causes swollen, stiff joints.\n\n### What Causes Psoriasis?\n\nIt’s not entirely clear what causes psoriasis, and it can affect anyone at just about any age. But scientists have discovered some connections between psoriasis and factors including:\n\n* Genetics\n* Obesity\n* Viral or bacterial infections that can trigger abnormal immune responses \n* Other autoimmune diseases such as Parkinson’s disease \n* Cardiovascular diseases\n* Type 2 diabetes\n\nPsoriasis is also associated with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.\n\n### Pharmaceuticals for Psoriasis Have a Range of Side Effects \n\nCurrently, there’s no cure for psoriasis, so standard treatments for the condition are aimed at relieving symptoms such as skin redness and scaling. But these treatments can have a range of mild to severe side effects:\n\n* Topical corticosteroids relieve inflammation but can cause thinning of the skin.\n* Topical retinoids reduce inflammation but they also cause sun sensitivity and some retinoids also raise the risk of birth defects.\n* Calcineurin inhibitors reduce inflammation but can also raise the risk of skin cancer and lymphoma with long-term use.\n* Coal tar reduces scaling and inflammation but can also irritate the skin and stain clothing and bedding.\n* Immunosuppressant drugs such as Methotrexate and Cyclosporine damp down overactive immune functioning but can damage the liver and kidneys.\n\n### How Can Cannabis Relieve Psoriasis Symptoms?\n\nThe cannabis plant contains over one hundred different compounds and terpenes that can activate receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). ECS receptors are found in nearly all tissues and organs, and this system’s responsible for regulating a long list of essential systems.  \n\nECS receptors respond to natural cannabinoids produced by the body and also to the many compounds in cannabis itself—and that unique relationship explains why cannabis may help relieve psoriasis symptoms more effectively than pharmaceuticals can.\n\nThe many layers of the skin contain abundant amounts of ECS receptors. Since 2007, [research has shown](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17157480) that some cannabis compounds can slow the abnormally rapid growth of some keratinocytes, the skin cells that cause the scaling and redness of psoriasis. These cannabinoids include:\n\n* [THC](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-pros-and-cons-of-psychoactive-thc/)\n* [CBD](https://hellomd.com/articles/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd/)\n* [Cannabigerol (CBG)](https://hellomd.com/articles/cbg-is-this-cannabinoid-more-powerful-than-cbd/)\n\nResearch also reveals that CBD can work with many of the body’s subsystems to:\n\n* Reduce inflammation\n* Regulate immune system responses \n* Relieve pain\n\nThis makes CBD an effective treatment for the redness, itching and irritation of a psoriasis outbreak. \n\nCannabis can also relieve the anxiety and depression that can accompany psoriasis as well as the stiffness and soreness of arthritis. By working on the body’s ECS, cannabis can relieve the physical and emotional symptoms of psoriasis without many of the side effects of prescription medications.\n\n### How to Use Cannabis to Help Ease Psoriasis Symptoms\n\nCannabis can help psoriasis in a variety of ways: \n\n* You can apply topical cannabis preparations such as balms and creams directly to psoriasis flare-ups on the skin to soothe irritation and reduce scaly patches.  \n* Cannabis tinctures and edibles can help to balance the immune system from the inside out and reduce depression and anxiety.  \n* Smoking or vaping marijuana can help to promote relaxation and reduce pain associated with psoriasis.  \n\nScientists are still working to understand the causes of psoriasis. But research is showing that cannabis works with the body’s own systems to relieve a range of psoriasis symptoms without the risk of serious side effects.\n\nPhoto credit: Nina Buday/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. While acne isn’t the worst or most dangerous skin condition out there, it can be painful and take a toll on your self-confidence.\n\nWe hear a lot about cannabis as a treatment for a range of skin conditions—from dry, chapped skin to more serious issues like rosacea and psoriasis, but what about using cannabis to help reduce adult acne? Can the plant work to clear your skin? Or does cannabis make it worse?\n\nRELATED: [HOW CANNABIS CAN HELP TREAT & PREVENT DRY, CHAPPED SKIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-can-help-treat-and-prevent-dry-chapped-skin/)\n\n### What Is Acne?\n\nThe Mayo Clinic describes acne as [a skin condition caused when oil and dead skin cells block hair follicles](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/acne/symptoms-causes/syc-20368047), which are connected to oil glands. It causes:\n\n* Irritation\n* Redness\n* Inflammation\n* Whiteheads\n* Blackheads\n* Pimples\n\nAll of the above can be painful and/or embarrassing. These breakouts tend to happen where hair follicles are most densely grouped, like on the face, chest, back and shoulders. \n\nThere are different types of acne, divided into two main groups: \n\n* **Non-inflammatory**, when oil and dirt clog hair follicles causing whiteheads and blackheads. \n* **Inflammatory**, which tends to be more painful and often driven by bacteria. The most serious is cystic acne in which puss-filled lumps appear right below the surface of the skin. \n\n### How Does Acne Develop?\n\nMost cases of acne develop due to: \n\n1. Excess oil production\n2. Bacteria\n3. Dead skin cells\n4. Too much hormone activity (This is why acne is so common during puberty.)\n\nOil glands (found in hair follicles, also known as pores) produce sebum, or oil, that works to moisturize skin and hair. Usually, these glands make an appropriate amount of oil. But sometimes, due to stress, poor personal hygiene or heightened hormone activity, these pores get clogged with bacteria, excess sebum and dead skin cells. \n\nIt’s the way pores handle being clogged that determines the type of acne. If the clogged pore closes up and bulges out of the skin, this is a whitehead. But if a clogged pore stays open, it’s a blackhead—both indicative of noninflammatory acne. \n\nBut when the walls of the clogged pores break down, and the sebum and bacteria seep under the surface of the skin, this causes pimples and cystic acne, or inflammatory acne. \n\n### Traditional Acne Treatments\n\nThere’s an entire category of the multi-billion-dollar beauty and skin care industry dedicated to treating acne. The options available are nearly endless, so let’s break it down into three main categories: \n\n**1. Over-the-Counter Topical Skin Care Treatments for Acne**\n\nThousands of over-the-counter (OTC) topical skin care options for treating acne are available today. These generally include active ingredients like:\n\n* Benzoyl peroxide\n* Salicylic acid\n* Sulfur \n\nWhile many of these OTC topical skin care options are affordable and accessible, there are other multistep topical programs that are more expensive, like Proactiv. \n\n**2. Prescription Medication for Acne**\n\nFor more severe acne cases, something a little stronger may be required. A dermatologist can prescribe medication to help treat acne, including antibiotics, to get rid of bacteria and inflammation. Hormonal birth control is also known to help. \n\nThere are more intense acne prescriptions, like Isotretinoin, which work against the root causes of breakouts. But these prescriptions can have major side effects like:\n\n* Severely dry skin\n* Depression\n* Suicidal thoughts\n* Inflammatory bowel disease \n\n\n**3. Holistic Acne Treatments** \n\nFor those who want to keep it a little more natural, holistic treatments are an option, like adding more adaptogens to your diet. Adaptogens are found in certain plants and herbs—ginseng, for example—and:\n\n* Have anti-inflammatory properties\n* Assist in regulating hormones\n* Help the body adapt to stress \n\nOr if you’re looking for a topical holistic option, honey is a great antibacterial and antifungal that you can put directly on a breakout. \n\nRELATED: [HOLISTIC REMEDIES TO TREAT ACNE & MINIMIZE BREAKOUTS](https://hellomd.com/articles/holistic-remedies-to-treat-acne-and-minimize-breakouts/) \n\n### Can Cannabis Work to Alleviate Acne?\n\nSpeaking of holistic treatments for acne, what about cannabis? When it comes to marijuana, more research needs to be done to know for sure whether it can help clear up your complexion. We know cannabis shows much promise in treating skin conditions like psoriasis, but there isn’t much out there specifically on cannabis for acne. \n\nThat said, there are certain properties found in cannabis that could help fight some of the symptoms and root causes of acne. [Marijuana is a strong anti-inflammatory](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2903762/), so it could aid against the painful swelling that comes with cystic acne. \n\nAnd according to a 2008 study, [all five major cannabinoids show strong antibacterial qualities](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18681481), and this can help fight against acne. \n\nThese cannabinoids are:\n\n* [CBD, or cannabidiol](https://hellomd.com/tag/cbd)\n* [THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol](https://feelgoodmed.hellomd.com/blogs/articles/tagged/thc/)\n* [CBC, or cannabichromene](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/tagged/cbc/)\n* [CBG, or cannabigerol](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/tagged/cbg/)\n* [CBN, or cannabinol](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/tagged/cbn/)\n\nAll marijuana consumption methods, from vaping to tinctures and topicals, can provide anti-inflammatory and antibacterial results. But when considering which cannabis strain or product to go with when it comes to calming acne, a high-CBD variety is probably your best bet. This is because THC can increase testosterone production in the short term, which can cause additional oil production. Plus, CBD has been proven to be an incredibly strong anti-inflammatory substance. \n\nSome marijuana strains with a high-CBD content you could try include:\n\n* [Cannatonic](https://hellomd.ca/strains/cannatonic/)\n* [Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin/)\n* [ACDC](https://hellomd.com/strains/acdc/)\n\nPhoto credit: [Daniel Max](https://www.flickr.com/photos/35080385@N08/) \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. And unfortunately, there’s no cure for them; there are only methods to dull the pain and speed up the healing process. \n\nIt may sound crazy and maybe you’d never guess it, but cannabidiol (CBD), a natural compound found in hemp, shows promise in easing cold sores and limiting cold sore outbreaks. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### What Is a Cold Sore?\n\nCold sores (also known as fever blisters) are made up of clusters of blisters filled with clear fluid. These patches happen in and around the mouth, especially in areas with a lot of mucus. \n\nWhen the blisters pop, the liquid oozes and dries into a layer of crust. While not particularly dangerous, they’re highly contagious, itchy and sensitive. Not to mention, because they occur on the face, it can make sufferers self-conscious.  \n\n### How Do You Get a Cold Sore?\n\nA viral infection called herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) causes cold sores. It’s very closely related to the sexually transmitted disease herpes simplex virus (HSV-2), commonly just known as herpes.  \n\nThe HSV-1 virus is spread from person to person through physical contact like kissing or touching. [Around 90% of American adults](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/healthlibrary/conditions/adult/infectious_diseases/Oral_Herpes_22,OralHerpes) test positive for the virus, even if they’ve never had a cold sore. Sometimes people with the virus never have a cold sore outbreak. \n\nBut when a cold sore outbreak does occur, chances are it will happen again. That’s because the virus lies dormant in nerve cells in the skin, ready to agitate healthy cells again.\n\nThese outbreaks tend to happen once someone with the virus experiences heightened stress or whenever the immune system is suppressed such as when you’re sick or during a woman’s menstrual cycle. When this happens, the virus activates and begins to attack healthy cells nearby. \n\nIn response, the body sends in white blood cells that act as the defensive line for your blood and body. When a part of your body (in the case of cold sores, in and around and your mouth) is experiencing a viral attack, white blood cells rush in to fix the problem. \n\nHealing is the eventual result. But until then, the cellular-level warfare results in pain, inflammation and oozing blisters that typically last four to seven days, and sometimes longer. \n\n### Non-CBD Treatments for Cold Sores \n\nAs mentioned, there’s no cure for the HSV-1 virus. But there are some traditional ways to help ease the pain and inflammation during a cold sore outbreak. \n\n* Cold sores tend to heal after four to seven days. The simplest way to deal with a minor one is to ice it (without letting the ice make contact with the skin) and give it some time. Applying ice at the very first tingle of a cold sore can significantly decrease the length of its stay.  \n* Viral medications can help the breakout clear faster and can sometimes prevent future outbreaks. \n* Over-the-counter creams like Zovirax, which are available at pharmacies, reduce the pain and keep the skin moisturized to avoid cracks and splitting. \n* Isopropyl alcohol applied to the cold sore with a cotton swab can help dry out the blisters and keep the area clean to avoid infection or irritation. \n\n### How CBD Is Well-Suited to Fighting Cold Sores\n\nCBD, a natural cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, can treat cold sores once they develop and limit future occurrences. CBD can’t cure the virus, but it can make it easier to manage. \n\nYou may never have considered CBD as an option for treating something like a cold sore, but it contains properties that address the main symptoms of a cold sore outbreak: pain and inflammation. \n\nIn a study from 2009, researchers concluded [CBD is effective at spurring healthy cell growth and limiting the pain and inflammation](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/) often present during the healing process. \n\nOn a longer-term scale, CBD can also help prevent future HSV-1 outbreaks. The key to CBD’s success is its [immune-boosting capabilities]( https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/560c73fa62373500064d0000/cannabinoids-and-the-immune-system), which lead to antiviral effects. A properly functioning immune system can fight off active HSV-1 cells, and therefore future cold sore outbreaks, better than an embattled immune system can. \n\nBesides a compromised immune system, there’s one other common cold sore trigger that CBD can help reduce: stress. For many people suffering from reoccurring cold sores, stress can be a major instigator. Luckily, [CBD shows “therapeutic efficacy” for treating anxiety and stress](https://www.drugabuse.gov/about-nida/legislative-activities/testimony-to-congress/2015/biology-potential-therapeutic-effects-cannabidiol) in animal models, according to the National Institute of Health. \n\n### How to Treat Cold Sores With CBD\n\nIf you’re currently experiencing a cold sore outbreak, try applying [CBD oil](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) directly to the skin using a clean cotton swab. This highly concentrated form of CBD will be even more effective if it’s in direct contact with the affected area. \n\nRELATED: [ALL ABOUT TOPICAL CBD & HOW IT SINKS INTO THE SKIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/all-about-topical-cbd-and-how-it-sinks-into-the-skin/)\n\nYou can also use a [CBD lip balm like this one from Elixinol](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57ad2d02f1740001522ff3/cbd-lip-balm) to help keep the area moisturized as it heals. \n\n### How CBD Can Help Prevent Cold Sores \n\nTo keep your immune system strong and stress at a manageable level, adding CBD to your daily routine is your best bet. Lately, I’ve been thinking of exploring CBD topical creams for aging skin, so I asked several women about their experiences with CBD topicals.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Women Love Their CBD Topicals\n\nCBD topicals are typically creams, lotions, oils, ointments and salves. There are many to choose from in places where cannabis is legal, but Marie Peterson in Wyoming makes her own.\n\n“It helps my skin with breakouts due to hormonal changes and moisturizes for super-soft skin,” says Marie. She adds that in addition to helping her reduce skin irritations, CBD topicals have the added benefit of relieving underlying pain. Another bonus for Marie is that the CBD topicals help her grandson address his eczema better than the medications he was prescribed.\n\nCamille Ritchie in Vancouver says she uses a CBD-infused coconut oil on her face to treat eczema and for its anti-aging properties. She’s also using it to protect against another major cause of aging skin: the sun.\n\n“I’m trying [my CBD-infused coconut oil] as a sunscreen and after-sun treatment,” Camille explains. “I’m hoping it will help diminish dark spots too, but we shall see.”\n\nCamille says she saw fast, impressive results from the CBD topicals on her eczema and is waiting to see how well they help her on the aging skin front.\n\nWendy Pagaduan, founder of Clean Coconut Skincare & Wellness, points out that CBD—and the cannabis plant overall—is “packed full of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids, all of which encourage skin health.” Antioxidants may prevent or delay certain types of cell damage and can be found in foods and plants, including many fruits and vegetables. \n\nAccording to Wendy, CBD is also moisturizing and can reduce the itching that comes with dry skin. And she, too, mentioned how CBD topicals are effective for eczema as well as a natural way to treat other skin conditions.\n\n### Doctors Weigh In on CBD Topicals for Skin Issues\n\nI turned to a naturopath for a bit more about the skin-healing properties of CBD.\n\n“CBD is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, so it could help with inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis as well as acne,” says Dr. Elaine M. Burns of Southwest Medical Marijuana Evaluation Center. \n\nElise Ho in Southern California holds two doctoral degrees, one in naturopathic psychology and the other in natural health. She uses a CBD-based anti-aging cream and is impressed with the results.\n\n“CBD does amazing things for your skin,” says Elise, echoing that it has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can help with acne and dry skin. “It can also help with the overall balance of your endocannabinoid system [when consumed],” she says. Achieving balance, or homeostasis, is paramount to maintaining a healthy body. \n\n### Quick Tips on Using CBD Topicals\n\nAny CBD product you choose will only be as good as its ingredients and manufacturing process. As with any skincare product, particularly for anti-aging, beware of exaggerated claims about what the product will do for you. Shop around for a reasonably priced product, but know that CBD topicals can be pricey, in the $50–100 range for a small container.\n\nWhen looking for a CBD topical, also consider the following:\n\n* Hemp-derived CBD products are the easiest to obtain and ship, but may not be as effective as whole-plant CBD topicals. Still, they're a great option for people living in states without marijuana laws on the books. \n\n* Check the other ingredients in your CBD topical to ensure you aren’t sensitive to anything else in the product.\n\n* Start by applying the CBD product to a small patch of skin, and wait 24 hours to see if you have a reaction. If you do, don’t apply further and seek out another product. CBD itself should not be reactive, but there’s no guarantee of this.\n\n* Store CBD products in a place with a stable temperature and away from extreme light, heat or moisture. You can also store CBD products in the refrigerator. Depending on the carrier substance—such as coconut oil—it might solidify when cold, but return to its original consistency at room temperature.\n\nBecause of the legal issues surrounding cannabis and CBD, make sure you know the difference between hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD products with THC. While many people say “hemp-derived CBD is legal everywhere,” that’s not entirely accurate. It’s critical to know the law in your area as there’s some confusion around what you can order online depending on where you live. \n\nPhoto credit: [Marivi Pazos](https://unsplash.com/@marivi)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/14b42/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg","srcSet":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/f836f/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/2244e/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 400w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/14b42/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 800w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/47498/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 1200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/0e329/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 1600w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/6995d/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.jpg 3637w","srcWebp":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/58556/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/61e93/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/1f5c5/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 400w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/58556/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 800w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/99238/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 1200w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/7c22d/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 1600w,\n/static/673277bc4551e8c39365c93a0e6c5ade/2a59d/86481eae9d069ee7d952fc0443a0e3b0.webp 3637w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2710-markdown","title":"How Cannabis Can Help Treat & Prevent Dry, Chapped Skin","slug":"how-cannabis-can-help-treat-and-prevent-dry-chapped-skin","content":"Being windswept looks good in photos, but rarely feels good. Think about how much the wind and other elements affect our outer layer; chapped leather lips and scaly skin come to mind. Luckily, research shows that cannabis can significantly boost skin health, especially by alleviating itchy, flaky red skin and protecting skin from harmful environmental factors. \n\nCannabis is also a powerful internal healing agent for skin conditions like eczema, acne and dry, itchy skin. Studies have shown that marijuana [helps suppress inflammatory responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/), which sometimes manifest in these types of skin conditions.\n\nBut how do cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) in order to help dry skin heal? And what’s the best way to incorporate marijuana into a healthy skin regimen? \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Activate Your Endocannabinoid System to Moisturize From the Inside Out \n\nOur skin needs oils to remain healthy. But as we get older, we produce less collagen—[1% less every year starting at age 20](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-does-skin-wrinkle-wit/)—and major oil-producing glands shrink in size. This means we gradually lose the natural capacity to produce as much nourishing oil, or lipids, as our skin needs. \n\nSebaceous glands—the ones that secrete those oils to hydrate and protect skin—are supported when the ECS is activated. And one way to activate and balance the ECS is by supplementing our natural endocannabinoid production with cannabinoids from the marijuana plant. A National Institutes of Health Study confirms that [CB2 cannabinoid receptors are key places for lipid generation and secretion](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18596221).  \n\nSpeaking of good oil, cannabis—and the plant’s seeds—is also packed with [omega 3s and 6s](https://www.byrdie.com/cannabis-weed-skincare), other fatty acids and proteins. This triad of nutrients hydrates skin by keeping cell membranes healthy. Cell membranes are important, because they’re responsible for blocking bad compounds from getting in and allowing nourishing compounds into cells.  \n\n### Marijuana’s Antioxidant Properties Protect the Skin\n\nAntioxidants help:\n\n* Keep skin healthy\n* Prevent aging  \n* Neutralize free radicals \n\nFree radicals are chaotic molecules that wreak havoc throughout the body, but particularly impact skin health. Free radicals are inside us, but they also come in the form of UV rays from the sun. Through its rich antioxidant properties, cannabis can protect the skin from wear and tear caused by the external environment. \n\nScientists have known for at least 20 years that [cannabidiol (CBD) is a more powerful antioxidant than vitamins E and C, while tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also has antioxidant properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC20965/). \n\nIn other words, cannabinoids prevent skin from getting chapped and dry in the first place and can also heal parts of the body that have already been affected.  \n\n### Smoke Harms Skin, So Go for a Cannabis Topical\n\nEven though marijuana has many beneficial aspects, one negative issue remains: Smoke is an irritant. Like tobacco, cannabis smoke irritates and dries out your skin—especially around facial areas—because it decreases the oxygen your skin needs. Smoking cannabis to relieve dry skin can actually lead to dry skin formation (and exacerbate acne). \n\nSo if you’re looking for relief from dry, chapped skin, your best bet is a marijuana topical cream or oil that can be applied to the affected areas. You can also use cannabis vaporizers, edibles and tinctures as an additional way to ingest the cannabinoids that are beneficial to skin health. \n\nWith marijuana topicals, cannabinoids are absorbed into the top layers of the skin, but aren’t absorbed into the bloodstream. This means they have little to no psychoactive effects and are best used for localized relief on a specific body part. You also want to look for a CBD-rich marijuana topical, because of CBDs anti-inflammatory properties and how it interacts with CB2 receptors, which we know are responsible for lipid production. \n\nRELATED: [USING CANNABIS-INFUSED TOPICALS FOR LOCALIZED RELIEF](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a70b886f24d1300077ccb22/using-cannabis-infused-topicals-for-localized-relief)\n\n### Our Favorite Cannabis Topical for Dry Skin\n\n* **Dr. Kerklaan’s Natural Skin Cream:** [Dr. Kerklaan's Natural Skin Cream](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5abc05461bb06d0008614073/natural-skin-cream) can help reduce skin irritation, inflammation and immune reactions. But this highly visible skin disorder affects adults of all ages, too. Standard medical approaches to treating acne include oral and topical antibiotics, along with a variety of other drugs. Unfortunately, many of these drugs have serious side effects and can take weeks or months to work. That said, acne can be treated safely and effectively with a few dietary and lifestyle changes, and easy-to-use holistic remedies including tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar—and cannabis.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/564935726915516/united-states/san-francisco-california/hellomd/)\n\n### What Causes Acne?\n\nBoth common acne and the more severe cystic acne are caused by [problems with the skin’s sebaceous, or oil-producing, glands](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/acne/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20368048). When these glands produce too much sebum, or oil, it can combine with dead skin cells and block pores. Then, opportunistic bacteria including Propionibacterium acnes (P acnes) and Staphylococcus aureus (Staph aureus) begin to grow in the clogged pore. \n\nAs the body’s white cells mobilize to attack the bacteria and fight the inflammation, the familiar symptoms of acne appear—red, pus-filled eruptions on the face and other parts of the body. Although most acne outbreaks heal without a trace, severe acne with repeated bouts of inflammation can result in permanent scarring.\n\nThe direct cause of acne is hyperactivity in the sebaceous glands, but [many factors play a role in triggering the excess production of sebum](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-11674/5-holistic-ways-to-treat-acne.html). Acne can surface because of:\n\n* Naturally oily skin \n* Certain digestive problems \n* Allergies\n* Stress \n* Hormonal imbalances due to puberty, menstruation or pregnancy \n\nIn many cases, though, the exact underlying causes of acne may be unclear.\n\nRELATED: [HOLISTIC WAYS TO EASE DEPRESSION & ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/holistic-ways-to-ease-depression-and-anxiety/)\n\n### Pharmaceutical Treatments for Acne Can Be Risky & Slow to Take Effect\n\nSince so many different things can trigger acne, standard pharmaceutical treatments for skin issues are aimed either at stopping the processes that clog pores or at soothing the red painful lesions that appear on the skin. The different traditional options for people suffering from acne typically include:\n\n* Antibiotics like clindamycin or erythromycin. Usually they’re combined with topical ointments and creams that contain ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, which can dry up the lesions and reduce redness.  \n* Retin-A, adapalene (Differin) and tazarolene (Tazorac), which prevent the pores from getting plugged up with dead skin. \n* Topical medicines like salicylic acid and azelaic acid to treat inflammation. \n* Oral contraceptives and anti-androgen agents, targeting the hormonal factors that can contribute to the production of too much sebum. \n\nAll of these medications have side effects ranging from mild skin dryness and reddening to digestive problems and sun sensitivity. But isotretinoin, a medication prescribed for very severe acne, has side effects so severe that users must participate in an FDA-approved risk management program.   \n\nAnother problem is that many common acne medications can take weeks or months to work. And in severe cases, they may need to be continued indefinitely.\n\nBecause these medications are problematic, many people are turning to holistic and alternative approaches such as [lifestyle adjustments and natural remedies to treat acne](https://wellnessmama.com/26504/natural-remedies-acne/). These strategies can target the same acne-causing pathways that pharmaceuticals do—but without the complications these prescribed medications can often cause.\n\n### Holistic Remedies Target Acne’s Source\n\nNatural and holistic approaches to treat acne rely on naturally occurring substances and diet rather than synthetic drugs to reduce inflammation, control oil production and kill bacteria. Low-risk, effective approaches include:\n\n#### Tea Tree Oil to Prevent Skin Infections\n\nTea tree oil has considerable antibacterial and antifungal properties, and it’s often used to treat skin inflammation and infection. Some studies indicate that it’s specifically effective against the two strains of bacteria, P acnes and Staph aureus, that affect clogged pores. Look for topical products that contain at least 5% pure tea tree oil and use as often as needed on the skin to reduce the swelling and redness of acne eruptions.\n\n#### Green Tea to Fight Skin Inflammation\n\nA large body of research confirms that green tea is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Applied topically to acne lesions, it can help reduce the production of sebum and protect against acne-causing bacteria. A variety of green tea-infused creams and ointments are available, but it’s easy to make a green tea wash at home. Steep green tea bags for a few minutes and soak affected areas with the liquid.\n\n#### Apple Cider Vinegar to Reduce Oil Production & Acne Breakouts\n\nMany people take apple cider vinegar (ACV) as a tonic for their general health. But like green tea, it can help kill bacteria and reduce the inflammation of acne breakouts. Applied topically, the organic acids in apple cider vinegar can reduce oil production and attack acne-causing bacteria in the pores themselves. Dilute ACV with three parts water to one part ACV and apply it to the breakouts with a cotton ball.\n\n#### Fish Oil to Improve Overall Skin Health\n\nFish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help promote general skin health and reduce overall inflammation. These fatty acids, eicosapentaeonic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), can also help regulate the production of sebum and prevent pores from getting clogged. Adding fish to your diet or taking fish oil supplements can add more of these healthy oils to your body to support skin health and reduce acne breakouts.\n\n#### A Low-Glycemic Diet to Lower Sebum Production \n\nResearch suggests that people with digestive problems are more likely to develop acne. High- glycemic foods that cause spikes in insulin levels can also trigger acne outbreaks by causing the body to produce more sebum. Switching to a low-glycemic diet that reduces simple sugars, and cutting down on dairy products, can help reduce the incidence of acne outbreaks. \n\n#### Cannabis to Boost the Immune System\n\nCannabis, particularly [products high in cannabidiol (CBD), can also help heal acne](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25061872). The skin’s oil-producing glands are rich in the endocannabinoid receptor CB2. CB2 is associated with immune responses and cell health. For this reason, [CBD can help regulate the production of sebum itself](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18596221). CBD can also support the body’s immune response to bacteria. To get these benefits, consume products that are high in CBD, or apply creams and gels rich in CBD to acne lesions themselves to heal inflammation and redness.\n\nResearch suggests that about 85% of people have experienced at least one episode of acne, and some struggle with it for a lifetime. Holistic treatments bypass the risks and side effects of prescription drugs—and by supporting the body’s natural defenses, cannabis leads the way. \n\nPhoto credit: [Yannik Mika](https://unsplash.com/@ynnk_mk)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) post. Start With a Marijuana Topical","slug":"new-to-cannabis-start-with-a-marijuana-topical","content":"Although there are now myriad ways to consume cannabis, novice cannabis consumers often find topicals to be an easy introduction to the plant. Topicals are less intimidating than other forms of marijuana: They typically have no psychoactive effects while often proving to be highly effective for pain relief.\n\nWhat exactly is a marijuana-infused topical? It’s a cream, lotion, oil, salve or balm that’s applied to the skin to help with localized pain or inflammation—that is, a cannabis topical treats the specific area to which it was applied and doesn’t enter the bloodstream. You may be surprised to learn that cannabis has been used as a topical for thousands of years to combat lower back pain, arthritis, inflammation, certain skin conditions and more.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How Do Cannabis Topicals Work?\n\nAt first, many people are dubious as to whether a cannabis-based topical will help provide relief. According to HelloMD’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Perry Solomon, “When a topical is applied to the skin, the cannabis is thought to interact with the CB2 receptors in the muscles or joints. This helps augment the endocannabinoid system, a series of cannabinoid receptors throughout the human body, which in turn may decrease inflammation and pain within that specific area.”\n\n### Do Cannabis Topicals Help Relieve Pain?\n\nDr. Kerklaan, D.C. has over 20 years of experience treating patients in the health and wellness space. Seeking a more natural pain solution to opioids and other pharmaceuticals, he developed a cannabis-based topical brand aptly named Dr. Kerklaan.\n\nWhen asked how topicals can alleviate discomfort and pain, Dr. Kerklaan says, “The most common pains we experience are neuromusculoskeletal in origin. This means pain from nerves, muscles and structures like our joints. Cannabinoids, including THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), are fantastic at helping with these three components. Topicals act by blocking pain nerves, reducing muscle tension and reducing inflammation.”\n\nAlthough cannabis topicals can be very effective in relieving symptoms from various conditions, it’s also important to note that everyone is different in how their body reacts to cannabis. A topical that works for you may not work in the same way for your friend. Often, this means trying out a variety of cannabis-infused topicals before finding one that works best for you.\n\n“There’s some debate about how much of the topical actually becomes absorbed through the skin,” says Dr. Solomon. “However, there are many people including professional athletes, who swear by cannabis-infused topicals for sore joints and muscles.”\n\n### What Role Do THC & CBD Play in Cannabis Topicals?\n\nIt’s common to find a topical that contains only CBD, only THC or a ratio of the two. People often ask which is best for them, but both CBD and THC may offer different effects depending on the person and the condition affecting them. \n\nAccording to Dr. Kerklaan, “THC and CBD are the most common cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant. In simple terms, THC can offer painkilling relief, and CBD can act as an excellent anti-inflammatory. There are many other therapeutic effects offered by these molecules, but when they’re used in combination in certain ratios, they can have a compounding or entourage effect.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BhxlYzolx3w/` \n<br>\n“In our Natural Skin Cream, we’re looking for the anti-inflammatory effect from CBD, hence the higher ratio of CBD to THC,” he adds. “In our Natural Sleep Cream, we’re looking to ease muscle tension. This is achieved by increasing the THC ratio. Pain is commonly targeted by a 1:1 CBD to THC ratio.”\n\n### Will Cannabis-Infused Topicals Show Up in a Urine Test?\n\nMany people work in jobs where routine urine tests are given. Dr. Solomon says, “When only using a cannabis topical, there’s a minimal amount of absorption into the blood, if at all. As such, there’s little chance of the THC becoming detected in a urine screening test.”\n\nThat said, if you were to apply a topical and then place a plastic covering over it, so that none of the cannabis can evaporate, there’s a small chance that there will be enough absorbed into the blood to perhaps cause a positive urine screening for THC.\n\nIt’s important to note that if you apply a topical to your skin, and then rub your eyes or put a finger in your mouth with the hand you used to apply the topical, there’s a chance that THC can enter into the bloodstream. If this is something that concerns you, immediately wash your hands after applying a cannabis topical to the skin.\n\n### Do Transdermal Patches Work the Same Way as a Cannabis Topical Lotion Does?\n\nCannabis transdermal patches are medicated adhesive patches that are applied topically on a veiny area of the skin. However, unlike creams and lotions, transdermal patches deliver cannabis through all of the skin’s layers into the bloodstream. These patches release small amounts of cannabinoids into the blood over a longer period of time. The result is that medication from a transdermal patch gives both localized and non-localized relief. \n\nMany consumers report having good to great success using these topicals for various skin conditions, sore muscles, arthritic joints or an aching back. So, if you’re looking for localized relief and aren’t interested in feeling high, you may want to try out a marijuana-infused topical. It just might give you the relief you need.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. But what many of us also have to contend with is the potential for health problems. As we age, certain physical ailments seem to crop up—failing eyesight, stiff joints, and increased aches and pains. \n\nNormally, senior citizens are prescribed a host of pharmaceuticals to ease pain from varying conditions. But one treatment that mature Americans are increasingly seeking out is medicinal cannabis. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, [cannabis consumption in people aged 55–64 rose from 1.1% to 6.1% from 2002–2014](https://www.livescience.com/57504-why-more-older-americans-smoking-marijuana.html), making them one of the fastest-growing groups of cannabis consumers.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nBut can marijuana really help with health conditions faced by seniors? The compounds in the cannabis plant, cannabinoids, bind to our endocannabinoid receptor system (ECS). [The ECS is extensive, with receptors in nearly every part of the body](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance) including the pelvic area, gut and brain. That’s why cannabis can treat such a range of conditions in a variety of areas—the effective compounds in the plant can reach so many places because of its interaction with the ECS. \n\nSo, let’s see how medical marijuana can help combat the health conditions that become more prevalent as we age.\n\n### 1. Cannabis Can Ease the Pain of Glaucoma\n\nStudies as far back as the 1970s show that [cannabis eases interocular pressure](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/468444). This pressure buildup is a result of fluid not draining properly from the eye and is one of the most painful glaucoma symptoms.  \n\n[The American Glaucoma Society is cautious yet hopeful about using medicinal cannabis to treat glaucoma](http://www.americanglaucomasociety.net/patients/position_statements/marijuana_glaucoma)  and related eye problems. There’s some new research suggesting cannabinoid receptors are present in eye tissue—so the possibility exists for marijuana to target the actual eyeball, not just the pressure around it. There are also trials testing cannabis’s neuroprotective properties, with the thinking that marijuana could have a positive effect on optic nerves. \n\nMost patients suffering from vision issues smoke or vape marijuana, but researchers and anecdotal evidence report that interocular pressure is only relieved for short amounts of time—when the marijuana’s effects wear off, so do the benefits for people suffering from glaucoma. Apparently, a cannabis eye drop is in the works, but not available yet. So along with other therapies, cannabis edibles or tinctures high in cannabidiol (CBD) are advised because their effects last longer than vaping or smoking does. \n\n### 2. Arthritis Sufferers Say Marijuana Relaxes Joints & Muscles\n\nArthritis is an umbrella term for a variety of joint disorders that can result in mild stiffness to deformity. Traditional arthritis therapies like cortisone injections and opioids can carry serious side effects like nerve damage and breathing difficulties, respectively. \n\nSince CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, marijuana strains and products that are rich in this cannabinoid seem to work well for people with arthritis. Some arthritis sufferers smoke or vape cannabis while some choose tinctures or sublinguals as a smoke-free consumption method. But [many opt for marijuana topicals as a way to treat a specific area](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-soothes-arthritis-pain). Plus, since cannabis used on the skin typically doesn’t reach the bloodstream (with the exception of transdermal patches), psychoactive effects are highly unlikely. \n\n### 3. Topical Cannabis Is An Effective Way to Treat Shingles\n\nShingles results from a dormant virus, the same that causes chicken pox, that reactivates later in life. It’s usually characterized by a painful rash or blisters that typically show up on the torso, but can also affect the arms, face and chest. Besides the unsightly rash, the pain from the virus is what most sufferers remember about the condition—and nerve pain may linger for months or even years after the rash disappears.\n\nFor pain, many people reach for a fast-acting vape pen. Vaping cannabis, like smoking, results in near immediate effects. Still, [many folks with shingles like to apply a topical marijuana product right on the affected areas](https://hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-and-shingles). A high-CBD salve, balm or oil can provide localized relief, quelling pain and decreasing inflammation. \n\n### 4. Cannabis’s Neuroprotective Properties Can Combat Dementia\n\nMemory problems are part of many people’s aging journey. On one side of the spectrum is forgetting where you put your keys, but on the other side are serious conditions like ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Alzheimer’s and dementia. \n\nIn Alzheimer’s disease, proteins are thought to block the space between the brain cells that are responsible for memory. A 2016 study showed that the cannabinoid [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has the power to clear those proteins from the brain](https://www.salk.edu/news-release/cannabinoids-remove-plaque-forming-alzheimers-proteins-from-brain-cells/). THC has also been shown to help with appetite, sleep and anxiety—symptoms that are also experienced by dementia patients. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS COUNSELING: HELPING DEMENTIA & CANCER PATIENTS FIND RELIEF](https://hellomd.com/articles/medical-cannabis-counseling-helping-dementia-and-cancer-patients-find-relief)\n\nAs far as cannabis products for dementia go, it really depends on personal preference. For more mental clarity, an uplifting sativa like [Jack Herer](https://hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) would be a good option for daytime consumption. At nighttime, an ideal strain might be [Bubba Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/bubba-kush). Bubba Kush is an indica strain that’s said to aid in relaxation and sleep, and it’s also reported to stimulate appetite—a problem some Alzheimer’s patients suffer from. \n\nIf vaping or smoking isn’t a desired consumption method, try sublinguals. Most people feel the effects of sublinguals in as little as 10–15 minutes. Edibles might also be a good option as they’re smoke-free, and the effects last longer than other cannabis consumption methods. \n\n### 5. For Tinnitus & Hearing Issues, Turn to Marijuana\n\nTinnitus patients suffer from persistent ringing, hissing or buzzing in their ears. Throughout history, doctors thought that tinnitus was a result of something wrong with the ear, but now researchers are confident that it’s actually caused by the brain—or a breakdown in how the brain interprets signals sent by the ear. \n\nResearch on the brain’s plasticity—its ability to change and learn to react to new stimuli—shows that it’s influenced by the ECS. An animal study from 2009 found that the [brain’s circuits that break down with a tinnitus diagnosis are positively influenced by the ECS](http://www.pnas.org/content/108/18/7601), giving people hope that cannabis can be a viable therapy for hearing issues. \n\nBesides easing tinnitus symptoms, cannabis has the potential to help those with hearing issues relax as well as ease related symptoms like insomnia, depression and irritability. In this article, we take a look at how cannabis can be applied topically. This often underrated method of using cannabis is quite powerful at easing pain, tension and inflammation. Cannabis-infused topicals have helped patients with a variety of issues from relieving skin conditions to arthritis and muscle pain.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Are Cannabis-Infused Topicals?\n\nCannabis-infused topicals come in a wide variety of forms, including oils, creams, lotions, balms, mud masks and more—all infused with potent cannabinoids. These topical options are designed to be applied directly to the skin, treating the specific area where it was administered. Because topicals don’t enter the bloodstream the way smoking, vaping or eating cannabis do, they don’t typically have any psychoactive effects.\n\nThat said, I did meet one patient who was so incredibly sensitive to cannabis that she reported feeling high after using a large amount of marijuana-infused topical all over her body. For the vast majority of patients, the effects of topicals don’t cause any change to your overall state—just relief in the area where you used it. \n\nAs a precaution, however, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after applying the marijuana-infused topical. Exposure to your mouth or eyes—by rubbing them with your cannabis-laden hands—could lead to [accidental ingestion and an unwanted high](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/574b679b982db9000a000055/do-cannabis-topicals-pass-the-drug-test).\n\nRELATED: [THC IN CANNABIS TOPICALS: WHY IT MATTERS](https://hellomd.com/articles/thc-in-cannabis-topicals-why-it-matters)\n\n### Why Do Patients Use Marijuana-Infused Topicals?\n\nPatients use topicals for a variety of reasons. If you’re sensitive to the effects of medical marijuana and find that you’re unable to function as well after ingesting it, topicals can make a great alternative to all of the other methods of administration.\n\nThe fact that [cannabis-infused topicals don’t affect you systemically also means that they don’t show up on drug tests](https://hellomd.com/articles/do-cannabis-topicals-pass-the-drug-test). So for patients in careers or other contexts where marijuana drug testing is prevalent, topicals are often the only viable method of using this powerful medicine. \n\nMany patients use topicals for everyday aches and pains such as sore, tense or injured muscles. Powerful cannabinoids seep into the skin, helping ease tension while providing localized pain relief.\n\nThe plant’s anti-inflammatory effects also help reduce pain and inflammation at the site of any sprained, pulled or injured muscle. Much like regular application of ice helps speed up healing by reducing inflammation, cannabis-infused topicals also bring down inflammation, helping speed the recovery process.\n\n[Another popular use for marijuana-infused topicals is to apply it to arthritic joints](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-soothes-arthritis-pain). Arthritis can make everyday tasks very painful and sometimes even impossible. Thankfully, cannabis-infused topicals can help arthritis sufferers by providing direct pain relief to the areas where they need it most.\n\nIn addition, topicals may actually help reduce or even reverse arthritis. A Canadian study, currently underway, is looking at [how cannabis’s anti-inflammatory powers may be able to actually heal the damage caused by arthritis](http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/dalhousie-researcher-investigates-use-of-marijuana-for-arthritis-pain-1.3142592), reversing the condition itself, rather than just offering relief from its symptoms. Scientists working on the study believe that by saturating the CB2 receptors in the affected arthritic area, joints may actually be repaired.\n\nArthritis patients who use cannabis-infused topicals regularly often report finding mild pain relief at first, but with regular use, their overall pain gradually reduces over time. If you suffer from arthritis, marijuana-infused topicals may be a great option to try out. \n\nPatients also use [cannabis-infused topicals for a variety of skin conditions](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-3-most-common-skin-conditions-can-cannabis-help). Cannabis is chock full of powerful anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal and pain-relieving properties. This potent mix makes cannabis-infused topicals incredibly helpful in treating a wide range of skin maladies such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea. With regular application of cannabis-infused topicals, many patients report that these conditions begin to subside. \n\n### How to Use Cannabis-Infused Topicals\n\nThe basics of using marijuana-infused topicals are simple. Apply the topical to your skin, at the site of your pain or irritation. This usually involves rubbing the topical in until it has been absorbed into your skin. Of course, usage can vary by product, so always be sure to read the instructions.\n\nYou should feel some pain-relieving effects within minutes of applying the topical, but may also find that regular application increases these effects and gradually improves the underlying condition. To get started with cannabis-infused topicals,  or [learn how to make your own topical](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-marijuana-infused-topical-for-pain-relief). \n\nWhen it comes to marijuana-infused topicals, the options are plentiful. Before you hone in on a particular topical, find out what types of oils were used to make the topical along with what other scents or ingredients were added. Think about what works for you. Is there a non-cannabis moisturizer or balm that you already use and like? You may be able to find something similar but infused with cannabis.\n\nFor example, I have sensitive skin and am allergic to many scents so I only use topicals that are made with non-pore-clogging oils like mango or shea butter, and I avoid any topical products that have added scents. Still, others may like something heavier like coconut oil, for higher levels of moisture. Meanwhile, many prefer scents in their cannabis-infused topical to mask any skunky odor. Thinking about your preferences ahead of time can help you ensure the product you’re purchasing will be something you can use. \n\nIn the next installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we’ll move from talking about the many ways of using cannabis to going over the many different types of cannabis. There are so many strains—aka genetic varieties—of cannabis that it can be hard to know which one to try. We’ll give you the basics you need to know to understand what strains are and how to find the right one for you. \n\nPhoto credit: [Jesper Aggergaard](https://unsplash.com/@aggergakker)\n\nNeed a medical marijuana recommendation? [Rosacea effects](https://www.compassionatecertificationcenters.com/cannabis-for-rosacea/) roughly 16 million Americans and often gets worse over time. It most commonly occurs in people with paler skin, though it does effect people of all skin tones. \n\nRosacea is often diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 50, but it is commonly misdiagnosed as adult acne at first. Rosacea can lead to other problems, primarily social anxieties due to appearance. 90% of people with Rosacea surveyed said that it lowered their confidence and self esteem, while 41% said it led to them avoiding public contact or social engagements. \n\nRosacea is also associated with irritated eyes, dry skin, and burning or itching of the skin. The cause of Rosacea is not exactly known, but it is believed to be a combination of genetics and environment. Many factors, however, are known to make Rosacea worse, including sun exposure, extreme weather, stress, alcohol, and caffeine.\n\n### Current Treatments\n\nRosacea is most commonly treated through the use of oral or topical antibiotics. One of the most common antibiotics used it metronidazole, in either a cream or gel form. Oral antibiotic use can cause a variety of stomach conditions like nausea, while topical antibiotics are linked to skin problems like hives, skin inflammation, and itchiness. Steroid creams are often used as well, though they are known to make it worse after long term use. Laser and intense pulsed light are sometimes also used for their ability to shrink blood vessels, decreasing the appearance of Rosacea on the skin. Rosacea, however, has no known cure, only treatments that can help control the condition. \n\nRELATED: [THE 3 MOST COMMON SKIN CONDITIONS: CAN CANNABIS HELP?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5759dd51fc385c0009000066/the-3-most-common-skin-conditions-can-cannabis-help)\n\n### Can Cannabis Help?\n\nCannabis has been found to help patients with Rosacea find relief from both their physical and mental symptoms. The high level of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties in cannabis have been found to be helpful at reducing the physical redness and facial inflammation caused by Rosacea. Marijuana can also help with stress and anxiety reduction that can help reduce the mental side effects that can be associated with Rosacea as well as preventing flare ups due to increased stress. \n\nA [2013 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/23889474/?i=2&from=marijuana%20skin) from the University of Bonn in Germany found that THC has been found to help decrease allergy related inflammation symptoms. The study found that cannabis has “important implications for the future development of strategies to harness cannabinoids for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases.” Though the the application of cannabis on Rosacea has not been studied specifically, there is anecdotal evidence that medical marijuana could greatly help people who suffer from Rosacea. \n\nA California based cannabis topical company, Sweet ReLeaf, has had some anecdotal success with patients who suffer from rosacea. According to the Founder of Sweet ReLeaf, \"we have patients who reported that Sweet Releaf does help their roseacea but they have also chosen the unscented version of the product after trying the original. I'm told this is because the unscented version does not have essential oils (for fragrance) which can tend to be too much for folks with sensitive skin.\" Topicals are often a very common choice for those who wish to try cannabis for their skin condition as smoking may further irritate the skin.\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. People coping with chronic skin conditions understand the value of healthy skin. Though most conditions cannot be cured or prevented - they can be managed.\n\n### From Traditional to Alternative\n\nFor the most part, people will turn to their dermatologist for help. They’ll then likely be prescribed costly medications which often do more harm than good. Accutane, a common treatment for acne, can lead to birth defects and even Crohn's disease. This is one of the many reasons why cannabis has become the growing preference for dealing with chronic skin conditions. \n\nCannabis topicals are an excellent alternative for people who want to get the therapeutic, medicinal benefits of cannabis without \"getting high.\" \nTopical cannabis is a great way to relieve common symptoms and triggers associated with chronic skin conditions, such as:\n\n>- Inflammation\n- Itching and burning\n- Pain\n- Infections\n- Acne\n- Bug bites\n- Scrapes and wounds\n\nIt’s important to understand how cannabis treatments can help alleviate and even cure the most common chronic skin conditions. \n \n### Eczema, Psoriasis and Cannabis\n\nEczema is brought on by a strained immune system which then causes an overreaction in the skin. Affecting over 30 million Americans, eczema is can be triggered by a variety of things, including stress, hormonal changes and even dehydration.\n\nPsoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects around 8 million Americans. More severe cases of Psoriasis may require special systemic therapies, but nearly all Psoriasis sufferers take some type of topical treatment to ease the side-effects.\n\n**The Solution:**\nUse a medical cannabis topical butter or hemp oil regularly and you will notice that your condition will begin to subside. Use a topical that also has additional ingredients which support skin moisture such as coconut oil, shea butter and essential oils. Results will vary but patients have been singing the praises of topical cannabis as even the most debilitating cases transform into non-issues. \n\n### Acne\n\nNo matter your age or station in life, acne is probably at least an occasional part of your reality. Whether chronic or stress-induced, blemishes often appear on our face right when it’s the “last thing we need.” Approximately 85% of Americans will have to cope with acne outbreaks at least once in their life. When we do, we go to great lengths to get rid of it. Accounting for over $2 billion in sales, the business of zit-zapping is booming. Alleviating acne by way of cannabis allows patients to avoid the side-effects that come with the most commonly prescribed treatments. Experts have found that applying topical cannabis treatments to the affected area can decrease inflammation, redness and shrink the size of the blemish (as well as reduce scarring). \nDiDi Davis is Founder of [Sweet ReLeaf](https://getsweetreleaf.com/), a topical cannabis manufacturer located in California. Sweet ReLeaf has created one of the most effective and enjoyable topicals on the market today which is creamy and smells wonderful. As Didi says \"We believe in the healing power of plants, specifically how the human endocannabinoid system communicates with the compounds found in Cannabis. We like to call it ‘Intelligent Medicine.’\" In her first blog post, Didi talks about the healing relief found when using topicals and whether or not to worry about drug testing.\n\n**The Solution:**\nDrink plenty of water and apply a topical cannabis treatment to your blemish before bed. Be warned that smoking cannabis, could actually lead to further breakouts, so avoid it until your blemish has subsided.\n\n### Rosacea\nEven though over 16 million Americans suffer from Rosacea, topical cannabis is seldom brought up when mentioning the condition. Rosacea causes bouts of skin flare-ups that make affected areas very dry, red and itchy. Most common among those with fair skin, Rosacea exclusively affects the facial area (cheeks, nose, chin and around the eyes) - and is not easily covered up.\nThere is no definitive cure for Rosacea, but it is another example of a severe skin condition which is directly affected by one’s immune system. It's asserted by medical professionals that Rosacea flare-ups are caused by hereditary problems that erupt between the body's immune response and its inflammatory pathways. \n\n**The Solution:**\nLike the other major skin conditions, inhaling cannabis will produce little to no positive benefits for Rosacea sufferers. Instead, use a cannabis-infused topical and apply regularly over a consistent period of time. This is also a good time to bulk up on healthy fats (such as coconut oil, avocado and almonds) to help support hormonal balance - another key factor in what triggers Rosacea outbreaks.\n\n### When The Whole Body Hurts\n\nIt’s important to remember that our body is one big machine and every part of it is affected when things get off-balance. Our skin is a great “caution cone” for understanding our own level of health. We are naturally linked to cannabis through our endocannabinoid system and this incredible plant seems to always know just what we need. Cannabis brings balance and healing where other medications would simply bulldoze our bodies into submission. \n\nBe smart about your overall health. When skin conditions arise, understand that it is actually the entire body which is trying to tell you something. \n\nConsider assessing daily activities, diet, level of exercise and sleep routine to support the overall benefits of medical cannabis. Whether your skin condition is curable or requires lifelong management - the point is not to fix the problem, but to help the body heal.\n\nPhoto credit: Geinz Angelina/Shutterstock.com","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/14b42/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg","srcSet":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/f836f/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/2244e/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 400w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/14b42/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 800w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/47498/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 1200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/0e329/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 1600w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/54511/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.jpg 1711w","srcWebp":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/58556/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/61e93/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/1f5c5/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 400w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/58556/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 800w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/99238/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 1200w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/7c22d/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 1600w,\n/static/81ef9eab32b66c183348ca4811d41047/6abdf/5eb97ebcd52480ac4596e3b0b67b7472.webp 1711w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":2,"currentPage":1,"id":5747,"name":"Skin Conditions","slug":"skin-conditions","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
