So, you may be thinking that cannabis flower would be the best way to consume marijuana without other ingredients that can make it go bad. But it’s not always clear what happens if someone uses a product after these dates. \n\n* Products may not taste as good as the fresh version. \n* Other products may not be as potent if important ingredients degrade. \n* Some products may be harmful if bacteria develops or key ingredients degrade into other substances.\n\nAll three of these things can happen with cannabis products as well.\n\nOver time, [terpenes and cannabinoids in various cannabis products can degrade](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28207408). This can cause them to lose potency so that they have a weaker effect—or no effect at all. \n\nDepending on how they’re processed, cannabinoids can degrade into different kinds of cannabinoids with different effects than expected. Some ingredients in cannabis can become harmful due to chemical processes that happen over longer periods. But these problems are largely due to improper storage. Excess heat can dry out cannabis, causing terpenes and cannabinoids to degrade. \n\nWhen the molecules in cannabis terpenes and cannabinoids degrade, the result can be a change in the effects of the product or its potency. Tetrahydrocannabinol ([THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc)), the ingredient in cannabis that can get you high, can degrade into another cannabinoid, called cannabinol ([CBN](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbn)), when exposed to UV rays and oxygen. CBN, which has a different molecular structure than that of THC, typically causes drowsiness rather than an intense high.\n\nHigh humidity, especially when combined with poor storage practices, can cause mildew and mold to develop in cannabis flower. Take extracts, for example. Cannabis extracts like wax and shatter, and others are produced by extraction processes that aim to preserve as many terpenes and cannabinoids as possible. But depending on the extraction method, impurities like lipids, or fats, from the cannabis plant and other substances can remain. \n\nSolvent-free extraction processes leave behind more impurities than those that involve solvents. A secondary filtration process using solvents, called winterization, can eliminate more impurities. But this kind of heavy processing can cause valuable terpenes and cannabinoids to degrade more quickly.\n\nCannabis extracts that contain high levels of lipids, or fats, can become harmful if they linger past their expiration date. Over time, these fats can oxidize so that if someone smokes or dabs the product at higher temperatures, they can release toxins. Cannabis extracts in products like creams, salves, and ointments may last longer than cannabis extracts alone do, thanks to the stabilizing effects of ingredients like oils, fragrances, and other medicinal substances. But oils, including cannabis oil, can also become rancid after long periods, especially if consumers don’t properly store them. \n\nThe same is true of edibles. Cannabis is just one ingredient in a product like gummies or brownies. The other ingredients in these products are no different from products that don’t contain cannabis. Like any other foodstuffs, they can degrade relatively quickly.\n\nEdibles often have an expiration date clearly stated on the product label. Also, oils and concentrates should be kept away from excess heat and light that can cause ingredients to degrade or oxidize.  \n\nFor products that contain cannabis alongside many other ingredients, such as edibles or topical creams and ointments, follow standard storage instructions and any provided sell-by dates for the products you have. \n\nUse logic and read labels when it comes to edibles. Cannabis should be stored in an airtight container, ideally either a glass jar or a container designed specifically for cannabis storage. Avoid using plastic containers or bags, as this can affect the flavor of your cannabis. \n\nMinimizing oxygen content in the jar is also important since oxygen can break down cannabinoids. Keep your jars sealed tight and choose a jar size that allows you to store your cannabis loosely with only a small amount of space at the top. Temperature is a crucial factor in keeping cannabis safe and potent. In a hot and dry environment, cannabis will dry out, and its [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55da2ff26430380006690000/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential) may get damaged or altered. In a moist, hot environment, the potential for mold and bacteria growth goes up.\n\nOn the other hand, you also don’t want to refrigerate or freeze cannabis. If you refrigerate cannabis, the humidity fluctuations might actually increase chances of mold growth. Freezing cannabis is a safer option, but the plant’s medicinally rich trichomes might break off when frozen, which can reduce the potency of your medicine. The ideal temperature range for cannabis storage is between 40 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit—not too cold and not too hot. Whatever you do, stay in the cannabis Goldilocks zone.\n\nKeep your cannabis away from sunlight, because UV rays have the ability to break down the organic compounds present in the plant, thereby decreasing its overall potency. In one study, [light was found to be the biggest factor in the degradation of marijuana’s potency](http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.2042-7158.1976.tb04014.x/abstract). However, when stored in the dark at a cool temperature, cannabis could be kept without changing or degrading for one to two years. \n\n### Find the Best Humidity for Cannabis Storage\n\nWhen it comes to storing your cannabis, finding the Goldilocks zone also extends to humidity. To avoid mold growth, make sure your cannabis isn’t too moist. On the other hand, if it’s too dry, marijuana might become less potent and will burn much more quickly—which means you’ll likely lose more of it in the air when smoking than you otherwise would.\n\nCheck your buds before storing them to see how moist they are. To test your cannabis, press the flower gently between clean fingertips. If your cannabis flower feels more like a living plant than a dried herb, it’s probably too moist. Sometimes cannabis is sold close to its harvest, and before it’s been properly dried out and cured. Properly cured buds will have some flexibility when you press on them, but will still be easy to break apart. If they crumble apart when you squeeze them, they’re probably too dry. If they stick to your fingers or are difficult to break up into pieces, they may be too wet.\n\n### Signs Your Cannabis Is Too Wet\n\n* feels like a living plant\n* sticks to fingers when gently pressed\n* difficult to break into pieces\n* doesn't stay lit when smoking\n\t\n### Signs Your Cannabis Is Too Dry\n\n* feels brittle and fragile\n* crumbles when gently squeezed\n* very easy to break into pieces\n* burns too quickly when smoking\n\n### Signs Your Cannabis Is Just Right\n\n* feels like a dry herb\n* has some flexibility when gently pressed\n* breaks into pieces without much difficulty\n* stays lit but burns slowly\n\nIf your cannabis is too wet, you can dry it out by leaving the top of the jar cracked open. Check your cannabis every day and then seal the jar completely when it’s dried out enough. If moisture is a concern, you should also make sure to keep checking for signs of mold. If you find any mold, discard the cannabis.\n\nIf your cannabis is too dry, you can add a humidity pack like those made by Boveda into your cannabis jar, and it will reinfuse the flowers with moisture. Never try to add water or moisture directly to your cannabis as this creates the conditions for mold growth. \n\nOnce you’re confident your cannabis is at the ideal moisture level, you can put it into airtight storage. You want to make sure the environment itself isn’t too moist or dry either. The ideal humidity range for storing cannabis is between 59% to 63%. \n\n### Keep Cannabis Secure from Children & Pets\n\nThe last step in safe storage is making sure you keep your cannabis in a place secure from children and pets. As with any medication, it’s important to safeguard against a child or animal accidentally ingesting your marijuana. This is especially crucial with edibles like infused candies, cookies or other treats that can easily be mistaken for regular food. Always label your cannabis so it’s clear to anyone who can read that it’s medication, and keep it in an area that’s locked and secure.\n\nUnderstanding safe storage practices is the key to ensuring your cannabis stays as safe and potent as when you first purchased it. Stashlogix produces lockable bags with odor lock containers that are designed to help store a variety of medications, though they are commonly used to store cannabis. The products are designed to specifically to keep medication out of the hands of children, but Customs and Border Protection seized many of their products because they claimed that they were drug paraphernalia. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### Drug Paraphernalia?\r\n\r\nStashlogix produces their bags in China, but have since been unable to import them due to the recent seizure at their port of entry. The seizure cost the company $12,000 directly and required the company to forfeit an additional $18,000 in raw materials as they halted production over the inability to import their products. The seizures and uncertainty about the future of the company have also led to the lay offs of three employees. The bags from Stashlogix look nothing like traditional drug paraphernalia, but instead looks like any compartmented bag. The Stashlogix website also does not mention anything about storing cannabis in the bags, and the founder of the company Skip Stone, has said that his children even store their various collections of toys in them. \r\n\r\nA few months ago, however, Stone received an official notification from Customs and Border Protection, which stated, “This is to officially notify you that Customs and Border Protection seized the property described below at Los Angeles International Airport on April 28, 2017.” The agency even noted that the products did not appear to be traditional drug paraphernalia, “standing alone, the Stashlogix storage case can be viewed as a multi-purpose storage case with no association with or to controlled substances,” but that did not stop the seizure of the merchandise.
