But the cannabinoid may be able to do more than that: THCV’s ability to influence the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system may make it useful in the treatment of certain conditions like:\n\n* Parkinson’s disease\n* Obesity and type 2 diabetes \n* Osteoporosis\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How THCV Can Affect the Endocannabinoid System \n\nSimilar to your body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant work on the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), a network of receptors located throughout the body. Currently, we know of two receptors in this system: CB1 and CB2.\n\nCB1 is most prevalent in the brain and spinal cord, though it’s also found throughout the body. CB2 is often found in immune cells, the gastrointestinal system and as we continue to learn more, the skeletal system. Research on the CB2 receptor suggests that influencing it with medications could [regulate inflammation throughout the body](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5075023/).\n\nJust as endocannabinoids attach to the CB1 and CB2 receptors, the compounds in cannabis— THC, CBD and THCV—are also able to attach to or influence these receptors. Much of the research surrounding THCV says that in the right amounts, [it’s a CB1 antagonist and a CB2 agonist](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1038/sj.bjp.0706414).\n\nIn other words, THCV can attach to the CB1 receptor and keep other molecules from binding to it; and it can attach to the CB2 receptor to bring about certain effects. In late-stage Parkinson’s, where characteristic symptoms like tremors and rigidity appear, there’s an increase in CB1 receptor density and activity.\n\nIn addition, inflammation in the brain can further worsen the disease, which is why researchers think that [influencing the CB2 receptor](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278584615000664), which plays a role in our body’s inflammatory response, could help slow or even reverse the disease. \n\nGiven what researchers know about CB1 overactivity in Parkinson’s patients coupled with CB2’s ability to alleviate inflammation, THCV seems like a good therapeutic fit: It can stop substances from binding to CB1 and reduce overactivity. It can also activate CB2 and maybe even ease inflammation.\n\nIn a study published in 2016 in the _British Journal of Pharmacology_, scientists tested the effects of THCV in rats with Parkinson’s disease. They found that [the cannabinoid improved motor function and had a protective effect on brain cells](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1476-5381.2011.01278.x). \n\nThey hypothesized that these effects were due to THCV’s antioxidant properties and its ability to attach to CB2. Overall, with more research they concluded that THCV could be useful in slowing progression and reducing symptoms of Parkinson’s.\n\n### THCV May Help Diabetics Control Their Blood Sugar Levels  \n\nInsulin is a hormone that controls the amount of glucose, a simple sugar, that’s in your blood. WIth type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t respond properly to insulin, or it doesn’t make enough of it. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood, also known as high blood sugar. There’s no definitive cause for type 2 diabetes, but contributing factors may include obesity and lack of exercise.\n\nA 2013 study on obese mice found that [THCV could control blood sugar and make the body properly respond to insulin](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3671751/). The study’s researchers speculate that the cannabinoid was able to do this by binding to CB1 receptors. That said, they say more research is needed because there could be other factors at play. \n\n[THC and CBD both show potential in helping those with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ae8fa71049b4f000a64e944/how-marijuana-may-help-manage-diabetes-onset-and-severity). However, THCV may show the most promise: It actually went through a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with good results. In the study, which was published in _Emerging Technologies and Therapeutics_, researchers found [THCV reduced glucose levels](http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/39/10/1777), while also improving the function of beta-cells, which make the hormone insulin.\n\n### THCV May Reduce Bone Loss  \n\nOsteoporosis is a disease that occurs when your body makes too little bone tissue, loses too much bone mass, or both. Though there are no studies directly showing that THCV can help with osteoporosis, research on the CB2 receptor suggests that THCV may have therapeutic potential. \n\nCB2 has been found on cells that make bone tissue and also on cells that reabsorb bone, prompting scientists to speculate that CB2 regulates bone mass. So far, studies on both mice and humans seem to say that this is true. \n\nMice who are deficient in CB2 receptors tend to lose bone tissue more quickly than their healthy counterparts do. And in humans, researchers have looked at variations in the gene that codes for the CB2 receptor. They found that people with two particular variations in this gene were more likely to have osteoporosis. \n\nThough we still don’t fully understand the role of the CB2 receptor in bone health, substances that attach to it may help those with osteoporosis. Indeed, researchers have already tested compounds that have an affinity for the receptor, and they’ve found that these substances can reduce bone loss. Controlling glucose level is key to managing diabetes. However, even with the help of medications and a healthy diet, some patients still have a hard time keeping glucose levels in check. Anecdotal reports from diabetes patients—and even one clinical study to date—suggest that cannabis can help patients in this matter.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### What Is Diabetes?\n\nWhen you eat or drink something, your body breaks down parts of your food into a simple sugar called glucose. This glucose moves via your blood to various places in the body, where it’s used as an energy source to help you carry out everyday activities. Diabetes arises when your body is unable to properly regulate the amount of glucose that’s in your blood, leading to what’s called high blood sugar.  \n\nInsulin is a hormone that’s responsible for controlling glucose levels in your blood—it’s always being released in small amounts by the pancreas. When your blood sugar is high, insulin signals for glucose to be pushed into cells; when your blood sugar level drops, your body signals for you to eat to help bring them back up.\n\nIn folks with type 1 diabetes, the cells—called beta-cells—that make insulin in the body are attacked by the immune system. Without insulin, the body can’t make proper use of glucose, and thus can’t work properly; this leads to common type 1 diabetes symptoms like fatigue, excessive thirst and nausea. \n\nType 1 diabetics must use insulin injections to manage their blood sugar. We’re not sure what causes this autoimmune dysfunction, but some theorize that type 1 diabetes may be due to:\n\n* Genetics\n* Environmental factors\n* Chemical triggers\n\nIn type 2 diabetes, which is much more common, the body makes insulin, but it either doesn’t respond to the hormone, or it doesn’t make enough of it. There’s no definitive cause for this type of diabetes, but obesity and lack of exercise are strongly considered to play a role.\n\nNew research by scientists at Lund University in Sweden suggests that [type 2 diabetes is actually four different “clusters” of the same disease](https://www.livescience.com/61917-diabetes-five-types.html). However, since this study is still new, widespread acceptance of this classification is still pending. \n\nType 2 diabetes can be managed with proper diet and exercise, though some folks may also have to take medications to help them control their blood sugar levels. \n\n### Diabetes & the Role the Endocannabinoid System Plays\n\nAt this point, most of us familiar with cannabis know a little about the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) (ECS)—the network of receptors located throughout the body that regulates essential life processes, like eating and sleeping. The most well-studied receptors in this system are CB1, CB2 and TRPV1. \n\nYour body makes substances called endocannabinoids that attach to these receptors. Cannabis, likewise, makes substances called phytocannabinoids that can also attach to or influence ECS receptors. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the cannabis plant’s most well-known phytocannabinoids, but interest is also rising in other phytocannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV).\n\nRELATED: [PSYCHOACTIVE THCV: THE CANNABINOID THAT KILLS YOUR APPETITE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8db389f24d1300077ccb5a/psychoactive-thcv-the-cannabinoid-that-kills-your-appetite)\n\nGiven that the ECS is so highly involved in the immune response and appetite, it should come as no surprise that it likely plays a role in diabetes. Research indicates that [obese women tend to have an imbalance in their ECS](https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/d7f6/e16dc5b9537fa78388a4fc7cb6d636bea2df.pdf). (Remember that obesity greatly increases your chances of developing type 2 diabetes.) These women tend to have:\n\n* More endocannabinoids circulating in their blood\n* Fewer CB1 receptors in their peripheral nervous system\n* Less of an enzyme that’s responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids in the body \n\nWe also know that activation of CB1 receptors increases appetite and promotes weight gain. This is one of the reasons why [cannabis is known for making you hungry](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ab1e34bf24d1300077ccb94/the-science-behind-how-cannabis-can-boost-your-appetite): When you consume cannabis, THC attaches to these receptors, leading to the “munchies.” Because of this, it’s thought that substances that block attachment sites on CB1 (like THCV) could be useful in managing as well as preventing diabetes. \n\nMoreover, studies also indicate that the ECS could influence beta-cells—the cells in the pancreas that produce the all-important insulin. That said, the extent of the ECS’s role in this context is still up for debate. \n\nSo, given what we know, could manipulating this system by adding phytocannabinoids from cannabis have a positive effect on both type 1 and type 2 diabetes? \n\n### Cannabis May Have Beneficial Effects in Type 1 Diabetes Patients\n\nFew studies have addressed the use of cannabis for type 1 diabetes, but those that have been done are encouraging. Researchers have studied the effects of both THC and CBD in mice with diabetes that arises from an autoimmune dysfunction.  \n\nScientists found that [THC could lessen the severity of the body’s immune response](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11357882); it was able to reduce both elevated glucose levels and insulin loss in mice.\n\nIn studies involving CBD, researchers found that the phytocannabinoid could both [stop the onset](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17714746) and [lower the incidence of](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16698671) autoimmune-induced diabetes. Another study also found that [CBD could reduce inflammation in the pancreas](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27767974)—the organ where insulin is made.  \n\n### Cannabis May Help Folks With Type 2 Diabetes Better Metabolize Carbohydrates\n\nIn contrast with type 1 diabetes, much more research has been done on type 2 diabetes and cannabis. A few studies have shown that [cannabis consumers are less likely to be obese](https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/174/8/929/155851), have a lower body-mass index and overall are [less likely to get diabetes](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27747490)—even when controlling for factors like exercise, age and sociodemographics. \n\nThough we still don’t know the mechanism behind this action, cannabis seems to allow for better metabolization of carbohydrates. In one study published in the _American Journal of Medicine_, [current marijuana use was associated with 16% lower insulin levels](https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/e929/11164cce4d520d20be733a258e6803a370b1.pd). Insulin levels are a measure of insulin resistance; high levels are a sign that the body isn’t using insulin properly and often indicate prediabetes. \n\n### THCV, Not CBD, May Help Reduce Glucose Levels in Type 2 Diabetics\n\nThese studies have indicated that there’s a promising link between cannabis use and a decreased incidence of diabetes, so much so that there’s actually clinical research on the matter. A recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in _Emerging Technologies and Therapeutics_ studied the use of CBD and THCV on patients with type 2 diabetes. \n\nResearchers found that THCV alone reduced glucose levels, while also improving the function of beta-cells, which make the hormone insulin. \n\nThough there’s been much interest surrounding THCV as an appetite suppressant and weight-loss tool, this study didn’t find that THCV helped patients lose weight. This doesn’t mean that the phytocannabinoid is devoid of these effects, but that perhaps the amount given wasn’t sufficient enough, says [Dr. Perry Solomon](https://www.hellomd.com/people/54cc02df6465320003000000/Perry%20Solomon,%20MD), HelloMD’s chief medical officer.\n\nConversely, the researchers found that CBD had no effect on glucose levels—in spite of previous research that suggested it could. To this, Dr. Solomon again noted that dosing could be a factor. \n\n“In this study, the amount of CBD used was 200mg a day. There’s some suggestion in the literature that higher doses are needed to have an effect on blood glucose levels,” he says. \n\nOverall, both CBD and THCV were well-tolerated by the test subjects, with no side effects noted. \n\n“There will be further research in using THCV with diabetics,” says Dr. Solomon. “Whether it will be shown that THCV can be used as a dietary aid remains to be seen in other studies.” \n\nStudies on cannabis and its effect on blood sugar are promising, and cannabis entrepreneurs are taking note. The previously mentioned study was conducted by GW Pharmaceuticals, a company that’s hoping to use cannabis to develop a drug that’ll reduce the need for insulin injections. But THC’s psychoactive effects aren’t the only notable feature of this chemical compound. In one study, researchers concluded that orally ingested THC reduced weight gain in mice eating a high-fat diet. But THC isn’t the only cannabinoid that can help with weight-loss goals. \r\n\r\n### THCV, the Cannabinoid That Suppresses Appetite\r\n\r\nThe cannabinoid that can help manage your weight is called [tetrahydrocannabivarin, also known as THCV](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5aa8a1f1f24d1300077ccb8a/the-10-cannabinoids-in-cannabis-you-should-know). This cannabinoid is very similar in structure to THC and produces some mild psychoactive effects as well, but it has one very interesting side effect: the ability to act as an appetite suppressant. \r\n\r\nTHCV is mostly found in marijuana sativa strains. [Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cb16cd520d60009f4f4a3/durban-poison) contains relatively low quantities of the cannabinoid, while harder-to-find strains like Pineapple Purps and Doug’s Varin contain higher quantities of THCV. Studies have shown that [cannabis consumers tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI)](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27572145) than non-consumers do, but researchers stopped short of claiming any causal relationship between cannabis and BMI. Luckily, a few recent studies explore whether cannabis consumption leads to weight loss.  \r\n\r\nA 2015 study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research [investigated the effects of chronic cannabis use on the body weight of mice](http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0144270). Lean and overweight mice were treated daily with THC for four weeks and fed a high-fat diet. At the end of the month, the researchers observed the mice’s weight change, locomotor activity and whole gut transit.  \r\n\r\nThe researchers concluded that “THC reduced weight gain, fat mass gain and energy uptake” in obese mice. Interestingly, this finding didn’t hold for the lean mice—meaning, cannabis had no effect on their locomotor activity and whole gut transit. \r\n\r\nResearchers also discovered that daily cannabis use actually altered the gut microbiota, or the microbial population that lives in the intestine. Gut microbiota helps break down food, promotes healthy digestion, and can ultimately determine weight gain and loss. The researchers believe that orally ingested THC induced the change in gut microbiota, which likely contributed to the weight loss in obese mice.  \r\n\r\nRELATED: [THE MUNCHIES WILL MAKE YOU FAT, RIGHT? Metabolic syndrome can be a nebulous term, but in this study it was defined as:\r\n\r\n* Elevated fasting glucose\r\n* High triglycerides\r\n* Low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol\r\n* Elevated systolic/diastolic blood pressure\r\n* Increased waist circumference \r\n\r\nBasically, metabolic syndrome is when someone experiences all of these conditions together, which makes them more susceptible to diabetes, stroke and heart disease. \r\n\r\nAdults between the ages of 20–59 were surveyed with respondents totaling 8,500. Some had never consumed cannabis, others had previously consumed marijuana, and another group comprised current cannabis consumers. The researchers found that less than 14% of current marijuana consumers were affected by metabolic syndrome, compared to 22% which is the national average for adults in the United States.\r\n\r\nResearchers concluded, “Current marijuana use is associated with lower odds of metabolic syndrome across emerging and middle-aged U.S. adults.” \r\n\r\nThese findings are promising for people with health issues that increase the risk of obesity such as:\r\n\r\n* Postpartum depression\r\n* Insulin resistance\r\n* Hypothyroidism\r\n* Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)\r\n* Cushing’s syndrome \r\n* Heightened stress \r\n\r\nIf you’re dealing with one of these issues and are worried about possible weight gain, cannabis could be a natural way to counteract that side effect. \r\n\r\nThere’s way more to the story when it comes to cannabis and your weight. New trends seem to spring out of the ground, some taking hold with others dying off almost as quickly as they appeared. Now that we’ve fully entered into the new year, it’s time to look at my first installment of the top trends dawning in 2018. Here’s my list of the top four marijuana trends for 2018.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Trend #1: Cannabis Goes Mainstream Worldwide\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BgcOvNHFAs3/`\n_Kikoko's cannabis teas are featured in Oprah's magazine._\n\nWhen my co-founder and I launched HelloMD over four years ago in California, more than a few people made it clear to us that getting into this industry was “a lot like getting into porn or gambling.” The implication was that it was an industry hiding in the shadows and moreover something to be ashamed of. Friends suggested that I make a “Plan B” and told me that having a family while getting involved in cannabis was on the fringe of what might be considered “respectable.” I was called a drug dealer more times than I care to think about, even though product sales was not a part of our roadmap at the time.\n\nFast forward to today, and everything’s changing—and fast. As of now, nine U.S. states have recreational cannabis laws and 19 more states allow marijuana for medical use. Opinion polls indicate that 61% of Americans support cannabis legalization, the highest it’s ever been. Canada, our progressive neighbor to the north, is now dwarfing the U.S. in regards to cannabis research, development and a federal government that supports medicinal and adult-use marijuana among the general population. Not to mention the fact that the Canadian stock exchange is going crazy for marijuana companies. \n\nThe cannabis industry is also now looking to Germany, where the federal government is embracing legalization and cannabis as a “[doctor-prescribed, insurance-paid, and pharmacy-provided product](https://internationalcbc.com/could-germany-become-the-worlds-largest-cannabis-market/).” Germany, the largest member state of the European Union, is now poised to possibly be the world’s largest cannabis market, with its 82 million citizens and positive economic growth forecast.\n\nAnd women are stepping forward, supporting cannabis in the myriad ways that it may be used and consumed. I’ve held a firm belief since my time starting in the cannabis industry, that marijuana would begin to really go mainstream when women embraced the consumption of cannabis. This includes moms who use cannabis to help ease their children’s seizures as well as women who merely advocate for using cannabis as a way to relax and unwind. \n\nWe’ve seen Gwyneth Paltrow vaping within the glossy pages of her magazine _Goop_. In an interview, she states, “It’s incredible to see people who can’t sleep, or people who have chronic pain, report really positive results (with marijuana), and it’s a natural substance.” And most recently, _O Magazine_ did a feature article on Kikoko, an innovative women-owned business in California that hosts high-end tea parties with cannabis-infused tea. When Oprah Winfrey deems cannabis acceptable enough to grace her pages, it’s time to take note. \n\n**FORECAST:** We’ve reached the tipping point. 2018 is the year that cannabis comes out of the closet and goes mainstream. Women will be the driving force in mainstream acceptance as stigma decreases and more mainstream stars, such as Oprah, give cannabis their stamp of approval.\n\n### Trend #2: Cannabis as an Alcohol Replacement\n\n![Cannabis replaces alcohol](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5abbda6ff24d1300077ccba1-7653114a-fe13-4cc5-9b6a-7a0faf8261a4/original.jpg)\n\nRecently, I decided to reduce my alcohol intake, and sometimes use cannabis instead.  In my experience, microdosing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is an effective alcohol replacement, without any of the negative side effects that come with drinking alcohol. Consuming cannabidiol (CBD), which has anti-anxiety properties and is non-psychoactive, also helps me relax and unwind after a stressful day at work. Reasons for substituting alcohol with cannabis may vary person to person, but it’s clear that cannabis is starting to be viewed as a healthier substitute for alcohol.\n\nAlcohol is socially acceptable and taps into the pleasure-reward circuit in our brains, yet it causes a multitude of health problems—and in extreme cases death. Nearly 88,000 deaths are attributed to alcohol in the U.S. every year. It affects coordination, memory and even the executive functions of the cerebral cortex. It’s a depressant, can lead to alcoholism and damages the liver. And recent research has indicated that even moderate drinking can lead to brain damage. (Thanks, but I need all the brain cells I have left.) Alcohol is effectively a poison to our bodies; it’s a neurotoxin and, as we all know, can cause nasty unwanted hangovers the day after.\n\nCannabis also taps into our brain’s pleasure-reward circuit, allowing most people to feel good, if not euphoric. The big difference is that marijuana interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), which has receptors throughout the body that respond to the compounds, or cannabinoids, within the plant. These cannabinoids create effects, depending on the person, such as pain relief, relaxation, an increased desire to sleep, decreased inflammation and even a stronger immune response, among other things. Even if someone consumes cannabis recreationally, they may have positive medical outcomes based on the properties inherent within the plant.\n\nFor the health conscious, or for folks who just want to reduce their intake of alcohol overall, cannabis is a great solution. A recent report indicates that millennials “are leading a major shift in consumption behavior as the stigma of cannabis use decreases and the collective perspective of cannabis shifts in a positive direction.” It seems that the purported medical benefits of cannabis minus the negative side effects of alcohol are making an excellent substitution for Friday night beers or Mommy’s chardonnay. In many instances, people have cited that they see marijuana as the “safer” choice over alcohol, and that with cannabis they’re less likely to make poor decisions, such as drinking and driving.\n\nAs people age, the risk of hangovers from alcohol increases. Consuming cannabis doesn’t lead to the same type of response. Although it’s not widely known why we get an alcohol hangover, some research indicates that it’s an inflammatory response that occurs in our bodies, similar to when we fight a viral infection. With cannabis, you don’t lose the entire day after, and as a result it feels as if it leads to a healthier and more active lifestyle for many.\n\nThe good news about this trend is that there have been zero cannabis-related deaths, so if society collectively shifts towards cannabis as an alcohol replacement, it may also save lives. And let’s face it, you don’t find many people in a bar fight after vaping cannabis.\n\n**FORECAST:** Cannabis is increasingly becoming more socially acceptable and is a great alternative to alcohol. As a result, people are taking notice. Expect to see more and more people abstaining from alcohol in lieu of cannabis as well as more cannabis gatherings where alcohol is decidedly absent.\n  \n### Trend #3: Cannabinoid THCV Can Help With Weight Management\n\n![THCV suppresses appetite](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5abbda6ff24d1300077ccba1-55da7ee6-514f-4b64-b1d8-9a01b68ee757/original.jpg)\n\nEveryone knows about THC, the rock star cannabinoid in marijuana that boasts not only numerous medicinal properties but the psychoactivity that produces the high cannabis is so well known for. People are now also aware of CBD, the other superstar cannabinoid that’s non-psychoactive and is also an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic; it’s also really good at quelling anxiety.\n\nNow we have a new cannabinoid kid on the block: tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)—and the hype may be warranted.\n\nTHCV was called the “[sports car of cannabinoids](https://www.steephill.com/blogs/38)” by Steep Hill labs for the strong energetic effect it creates. It contains around 25% of the psychoactivity of THC and may reduce or even stop panic attacks, which may be common for some people when ingesting strains higher in THC.\n\nTHCV is also known to be an anti-convulsant and a neuroprotectant; it may help with diabetes and is becoming well known for suppressing appetite. For people looking to eat less or radically suppress the desire to binge eat, THCV may be a possible solution. Note though, that THCV may make sleeping more difficult, so consuming it late at night to avoid fridge raids may be ill-advised.\n\nIt’s very rare to find THCV on its own. Most likely, it’s within cannabis flowers that also contain THC. Interestingly, THCV has the ability to alter some of THC’s effects, including elevated heart rate or impaired short-term memory. If you’re easily able to tolerate THC and enjoy psychoactive effects, THCV may be your ticket to weight management and increased energy.\n\n**FORECAST:** People who are interested in weight management and a more balanced high will be asking cannabis retailers for strains higher in THCV. This in turn will lead to more strains becoming available. In addition, THCV-dominant strains will start to appear as well as THCV distillates.\n\n### Trend #4: Indica & Sativa Are Out—Terpenes Are In \n\n![Phylos galaxy mapping cannabis genetics](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5abbda6ff24d1300077ccba1-eaa6b889-3c47-455f-9d97-69a398f9e90a/original.jpg)\n_The Phylos Galaxy, a data visualization of cannabis genetics._\n\n“Help me find an indica strain that will put me to sleep.” This is a common statement along with, “Which sativa will wake me up and help me feel more energetic, more focused?” Typically, people go into a dispensary, and the cannabis consultant might suggest an indica for sleep or relaxation, a sativa for energetic daytime use or a hybrid strain for something in between. But according to genetics researchers, these classifications are now misleading, if not downright untrue. Mowgli Holmes, a geneticist that started Phylos Bioscience says, “If there were ever discrete varieties like that (indica, sativa, hybrid), they're gone now—they've just been bred out of existence.”\n\nMowgli’s company is mapping the genetics of cannabis through DNA sequencing with the goal of understanding the evolutionary history of each strain in the hopes of helping people better understand what they’re consuming. Creating [data visualization from each cannabis sample](http://galaxy.phylosbioscience.com/) has allowed us to see how closely related—or not—one strain is to another.\n\nClusters within the galaxy show close relationships between varieties of cannabis such as OG Kush, one of the most popular strains sold on the market today. In other words, many varieties are closely related, but have little to or nothing to do with indica, sativa or hybrid. To complicate matters, varieties were crossed with each other more frequently over the past 40 years, resulting in a big mish mash, creating even less certainty over lineage.  \n\nIn lieu of sativa, indica and hybrid, many people are beginning to refer to the terpene profile of marijuana strains, which in many ways may have a larger impact on the overall effects as well as the therapeutic value of different cannabis strains. Terpenes are the oil compounds found in plants, such as cannabis, and some insects. They’re responsible for the taste and smell of cannabis plants, and possess medicinal benefits. There are 140 or more terpenes within cannabis, and they’re thought to increase the effects of the cannabinoids within cannabis. \n\nA recent study  by Dr. Ethan Russo, the director of research and development at the International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute, found that “[terpenoids are quite potent, and affect animal and even human behavior when inhaled](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/).” They also noted that “[terpenes] display unique therapeutic effects that may contribute meaningfully to the entourage effects of cannabis-based medicinal extracts.”\n\nInterestingly, some terpenes act as an inhibitor to THC’s psychoactive high, which increases cannabis’s therapeutic values. Despite marijuana’s recent resurgence as a medicine, the scientific research on its intricacies and therapeutic potential is still in its infancy—and hampered here in the U.S. because of its federal prohibition.\r\n\r\nThe more we learn about cannabis, the more apparent the plant’s complexities and effects on our bodies. One thing we do know for sure is that cannabis contains dozens of chemical compounds called cannabinoids, all tasked with special jobs. The exact number of cannabinoids is yet to be confirmed, but common consensus among researchers is that there are at least 100. These are easily the most well-known and recognizable cannabinoids to date. But there are dozens of others that show promise for treating all sorts of medical conditions. \r\n\r\n### 10 Cannabinoids You Should Know\r\n\r\n#### #1: CBC (Cannabichromene)\r\n\r\nThis cannabinoid shares a chemical structure very similar to THC, CBD and cannabinol (CBN). CBC is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the brain and could very well contribute greatly to the analgesic effects of cannabis overall. Just like THCA turns into THC, THC turns into CBN when exposed to oxygen or UV light. Improper storage or packaging without UV protection can lead to a higher amount of CBN. This cannabinoid often gets a bad reputation because higher CBN levels means less THC and less of a high. Plus, CBN can often make people feel sleepy. But don’t make any hasty judgments—CBN is one of the most promising cannabinoids out there. \r\n\r\nCBN: \r\n\r\n* Is non-psychoactive\r\n* Can help with sleep issues like narcolepsy, insomnia, sleep apnea and more \r\n* May [ease the overgrowth of skin cells](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18681481), which can reduce psoriasis flare-ups and help with MRSA when applied as a topical\r\n* Contains strong anti-inflammatory properties, aiding in pain relief\r\n* Interacts with [TRPV2 receptors, which are high-threshold heat sensors](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165957/), making it a potential treatment for burn victims\r\n\r\n#### #4: THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)\r\n\r\nTHCV is very similar in structure to THC, and it comes with its own psychoactive effects as well. Because it’s considered a precursor to cannabinoids, it gets significantly less scientific attention than the cannabinoids it produces. But we’re starting to learn that CBGA has similar analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties to its cannabinoid offspring. \r\n\r\nCBGA:\r\n\r\n* Is non-psychoactive \r\n* Can work as an [analgesic to help relieve pain](https://www.steephill.com/img/uploads/testings/LeadingTheScience.pdf), much like THC and CBD can\r\n* Helps [fight inflammation](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0968089615000838) like THC and CBD do\r\n\r\n#### #9 CBCA (Cannabichromenate) \r\n\r\nCBCA is a raw cannabinoid, found in the highest quantities before the plant is cut and processed. As it’s heated or aged, CBCA goes on to produce CBC and other cannabinoids that are relatively unknown and unstudied, such as CBL and CBLA. Like so many other parent cannabinoids, CBCA was thought to be an inactive chemical compound for quite some time, but that’s beginning to change.\r\n\r\nCBCA: \r\n\r\n* Is non-psychoactive\r\n* May be [responsible for antimicrobial properties](http://www.davoil.ro/documente/the-composition-of-seed-oil-and-its-potential-as-an-important-source-nutrition.pdf) found in some cannabis strains, but the reasons for this are still being studied\r\n* May be useful as a [non-psychoactive alternative to THC for treating  nausea](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3596650/)\r\n* Could help treat cancer. But, there’s a whole other kind of THC you may be totally unaware of: Delta-8 THC. In this article, we go over a less commonly known cannabinoid: tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV). This [somewhat rare compound has been called “the sports car of cannabinoids” for its various sought-after properties](https://www.steephill.com/blogs/38)—including that of an appetite suppressant, anticonvulsant and neuroprotectant. Many have found this unique cannabinoid to be incredibly helpful, and you may as well.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### Why Do Patients Use THCV?\r\n\r\nPatients use THCV for a variety of reasons, but [one of THCV’s most remarkable properties is its ability to suppress appetite](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/9383640/Cannabis-could-be-used-to-treat-obesity-related-diseases.html). Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is well known for its munchie-inducing effects, THCV has the opposite effect—when consuming THCV, patients are left without much appetite at all. This has made THCV a popular choice among patients looking to lose weight or avoid gaining weight from binge eating after they medicate with marijuana. \r\n\r\nAs well, [researchers say THCV may be especially helpful in treating type 2 diabetes](http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/39/10/1777), In this study, THCV was shown to significantly decrease fasting plasma glucose and improve pancreatic β-cell function, adiponectin and apolipoprotein A. This has led the scientists involved in this study to believe that THCV could represent a new therapeutic agent in glycemic control. \r\n\r\nTHCV is also known to be an anticonvulsant, which could be helpful for patients with epilepsy. As a neuroprotectant, THCV also appears to protect the brain and could thereby potentially prevent or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Preliminary research also points to THCV supporting bone growth. \r\n\r\nThat said, the reason why some patients consume THCV is simply due to its highly energetic and euphoric effects, which unlike THC also promote relaxation. Most cannabis strains that contain this particular cannabinoid also have a fair bit of THC. That said, researchers have found that many of THCV’s benefits still come through even when combined with THC. In fact, THCV can actually dampen or alter THC’s high, eliminating many of its negative side effects.\r\n\r\nIn one study, scientists gave subjects doses of both THC and THCV together. [While those using THC alone had negative side effects like increased psychotic symptoms, paranoia, delayed verbal recall, elevated heart rate or impaired short-term memory, those using both THC and THCV had no such effects](http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0269881115615104?journalCode=jopa).\r\n\r\nLike cannabidiol (CBD), THCV appears to have the ability to decrease the negative effects of THC, all while maintaining many of its powerful medicinal effects. Of course, what one may perceive as a negative effect may very well seem a positive for another person. The most notable effect of THCV is its psychoactive high, which—like THC—may leave some patients feeling less functional than they’d like. For those looking to avoid any kind of high, THCV is probably not the right choice. These patients should avoid THCV and look to CBD or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) instead—both of which have little to no psychoactivity. \r\n\r\nIt’s also possible that a patient may not want or need to suppress their appetite. Cannabis is often used for patients dealing with conditions—such as cancer, anorexia or digestive problems—that cause a loss of appetite. For these patients, the appetite-inducing effects of THC might be the main reason they consume cannabis, so THCV would only make their condition worse. \r\n\r\nThose using marijuana for sleep and sedation may also find THCV’s effects to be too energetic and stimulating. While THC can be moderated by terpenes such as myrcene to create a more sedative effect, THCV isn’t affected by this terpene in the same way.
