Most of the products showing up on store shelves are made using industrial hemp, the same plants that are used to make the hemp seeds that have recently gained popularity as a superfood. These products can be sold on grocery store shelves because they have absolutely no psychoactive side effects.\n\nThese cannabis beauty products, like hemp lotion and hemp infused face cream, are really just mainstream version of what many topical cannabis companies have been doing for some time with either hemp or whole plant extracts. These topical beauty products can help with issues such as inflammation or pain and they are a rising luxury trend, especially in high-end dispensaries. Often these dispensaries resemble a cross between an Apple store and an art gallery. \n\nAn example of a line of high-end beauty products infused with cannabis is the recently released line [Whoopi & Maya](http://whoopiandmaya.com). The collection, which is particularly designed for women during menstruation, was created by actor and cannabis advocate Whoopi Goldberg in collaboration with Maya Elisabeth, the founder of Om edibles. The topical line features luxurious products including a lavender bath soak and a body balm that ease discomfort associated with menstruation. \n\nCannabis’ presence in mainstream beauty products continues to help break down its stigma as a harmful drug. Hemp is a great way to introduce many skeptical people to cannabis, because the benefits of the plant can be separated from its ability to produce psychoactive side effects. The increasing amount of products shows cannabis’ growing appeal among the public because people are more open and willing to reach for these new beauty products that feature hemp leaves front and center on the packaging. \n\n### The Medical Community Says...\n\nThough the formal dermatologist community has not embraced cannabis yet, it may be soon on its way. Tamás Bíró, PhD, director of the immunology department at the University of Debrecen in Hungary has done research on the potential of cannabis at targeting the endocannabinoid system in and through the skin. He says, “the skin barrier, which is very important for moisture retention, sebum production, and sweat-gland function, as well as skincentric sensory functions such as pain and itch. But perhaps most important, it appears that the endocannabinoid system controls skin inflammation—so if an inflammatory or irritation challenge assaults the skin, the endocannabinoid system fights against it.” \n\n[A study recently conducted by Bíró](http://www.elle.com/beauty/a42274/higher-power-marijuana-beauty-products/) found that applying CBD to human skin cells prevented inflammation, showing great potential for its application as a topical anti-inflammatory. This study only further supports the large amounts of success that medical marijuana topicals have provided many people, including fighting against various pain and skin conditions. \n\nEventually, the mainstream dermatological community will start to take notice the positive results that cannabis topicals provide. [Dr. Adam Friedman](http://www.elle.com/beauty/a42274/higher-power-marijuana-beauty-products/), an associate professor of dermatology believes that the dermatology tide may turn in favor of cannabis soon, “I think that's going to change. Given that there is a wide array of skin conditions notorious for chronic inflammation and debilitating itch or pain, there are numerous potential applications. There's going to be an exponential increase in the attention paid to this in the derm world.” \n\nSimilar to issues cannabis faces in many other mainstream medical practices, concerns about questions like dosage and access to particular products will need to be addressed. As more research comes to the fore, clinicians may start to pay attention to the anecdotal stories brought to them by their patients. My HelloMD Co Founder says I would bathe in it if I could, and he is absolutely correct. I first noticed the wonders of cannabis for skin when I mistakenly used it after receiving a bad tropical sunburn. Pink as a lobster and without any sun remedy, I slathered hemp oil on my face and retreated to bed. The next morning, my face looked perfectly normal, not a trace of burn to be seen. After looking online, I found that cannabis topicals are an anti inflammatory and often used as a remedy for sunburns. Towards the end of the evening, two ladies abruptly turned to me and demanded to know if ‘the cream works’. As the cannabis expert at the table, I understood the context. Still, I was a little taken aback. 'The cream', I asked, \"Which one?\". There are already umpteen brands, I explained, varying in blend, strength and even smell. They cared little. They had heard from various sources about this supposed miracle 'pot cream', and they just wanted to know if it worked.\n\nThis scenario must be repeating itself all over the country. When something works, particularly for pain, word spreads. Just last week, a 75+ year-old friend of mine - who once told me the cannabis business was for lazy people - admitted that even he is now curious. Why? Because he’s reading and hearing about it everywhere. But mostly because pain is getting in his way.\n\nIn the case of the mysterious ‘cream’, these ladies were lucky. I quickly unpacked a plethora of samples for them to try on the spot. The cause of Rosacea is not exactly known, but it is believed to be a combination of genetics and environment. One of the most common antibiotics used it metronidazole, in either a cream or gel form. The numbers are staggering, despite prescription narcotic drugs still remaining a common staple in the average home. \r\n\r\n### Pain Relief With Medical Marijuana\r\n\r\nCannabis has a long-standing relationship with pain sufferers and has been used as a pain reducer for centuries. It's the solution for those who want to live a healthy, natural life without depending on harmful substances. \r\n\r\nFor folks with muscular pain and even certain skin conditions, cannabis topicals have proven especially beneficial and can offer something prescription medications can’t—an uninterrupted life. Cannabis topicals don’t make you high, they don’t interfere with your ability to work or remain active, and they take effect right away so you feel relief immediately.\r\n\r\nHowever, as cannabis use grows, this question comes into play: “Will cannabis interfere with my life?” One concern is how cannabis topicals may conflict with drug testing. Transdermal patches differ from topical creams in that the medicine goes through all seven layers of skin and enters directly into the bloodstream. Transdermal patches deliver systematic rather than localized relief.”\r\n\r\n### Pros of Using Cannabis Patches\r\n\r\nPatches allow for absorption at a steady rate over a longer period of time. They don’t require a person to remember to dose at regular intervals, and they can even be used with an upset stomach. Nitroglycerin and nicotine patches are two of the more well-known medicated patches associated with traditional western medicine.\r\n“Transdermal patches are not new,” Graham contends. “However, using them as a delivery method for cannabis is. We find that our consumers already feel comfortable with a transdermal patch. Many of our consumers are elderly, and patches are not only familiar but also a benign way to consume cannabis for pain relief.”\r\n\r\nAn added benefit to transdermal patches is the accuracy in dosing. Unlike edibles, which are first absorbed in the stomach, a patch delivers the medicine directly into the bloodstream. Interestingly, Graham notes, “A 10 mg dose from a transdermal patch is roughly equivalent to what you might feel from an 80 mg serving from an edible.
