Weed-infused topicals come in body oils, creams, and salves, and can be applied directly to an area of pain. A patch is typically placed on the arm, wrist, or thigh and administers marijuana into the bloodstream. So, if the patch has a significant dose of THC, you may feel slightly altered.\n\n[Cannabis creams and balms](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-topicals-provide-relief-for-sore-muscles-and-pain) are absorbed through the skin and binding to the CB1 and CB2 receptors at the localized area of pain. THC and cannabidiol CBD, are cannabinoids within topicals that have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect on the body. \n\nIn addition to the cannabinoids, weed creams may contain other ingredients and essential oils that can help with pain relief, such as eucalyptus, camphor, menthol, cayenne, clove, and wintergreen.\n\n### Benefits of Marijuana-Infused Topicals\n\n[Topicals can be used to help](https://hellomd.com/articles/topicals-a-revelation-in-treating-pain-with-cannabis) for:\n\n- Inflammation\n- Chronic pain\n- Arthritis\n- Menstrual cramps\n- Sore muscles\n- Better sleep\n- Skin conditions\n\nWhile topicals can provide localized pain relief, they work best if they are a part of a broader self-care routine, which could include stretching, massage, brisk activity (like a walk), and meditation or mindfulness.\n\n### 7 Best Cannabis Topicals\n\nIf you're looking for the soothing effects of cannabis topicals, here are seven products worth trying:\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-14 at 10.09.18 AM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_14_at_10_09_18_AM_4ee6d4e0a6.png)\n\n### 1. Luckily, cannabis’s anti-inflammatory properties can help alleviate some of this discomfort. \r\n\r\nThe popularity of cannabis lotions, creams, balms and oils has soared—you no longer need to ingest cannabis to experience its benefits. Consumers are now rubbing these marijuana-infused topicals onto their back and other areas experiencing pain for localized, non-psychoactive relief.\r\n\r\nBut with so many cannabis topicals to choose from, how do you know which products are the right fit for you? Marijuana topicals on average can cost as much as $40 a jar, which is a lot to pay for something that may not actually work. For this reason, I wanted to detail my experience with an aching lower back, in order to share what worked best for me.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \r\n\r\n### 1. Flour Child Relief Balm: A Fragrant & Relaxing CBD Topical\r\n\r\nFlour Child Relief Balm was the first marijuana topical I purchased as a medical patient at SPARC dispensary in San Francisco. I found myself wondering if a high cannabidiol (CBD) topical rubbed on the skin could actually help with back pain. The budtender gave me my first glass container of Flour Child’s Relief Balm and since then I’ve always kept it within reach.\r\n\r\nFlour Child has stayed in my rotation for this long because it’s unique amidst a sea of marijuana-infused topicals and oils. It comes in four fantastic formulas: rose-geranium, lemongrass, lavender-mint and unscented. I tried the lavender-mint and unscented versions and found the lavender to be very relaxing; I appreciate the pleasant aromas in combination with my pain relief.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [DO CANNABIS TOPICALS PASS THE DRUG TEST?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/574b679b982db9000a000055/do-cannabis-topicals-pass-the-drug-test)\r\n\r\nThis is a high CBD topical, while others are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) based. This is purely anecdotal, but I believe that high CBD topicals are more effective at reducing the acute pain I feel in my spine, while the other formulas are better at combatting my chronic pain caused by inflammation. \r\n\r\n### 2. Om Edible’s Lion Balm Stick: A Convenient & Fast-Acting Marijuana Topical\r\n\r\nI’ve been a fan of Om Edible’s Lion Balm for the past year. I originally found their beeswax-based topical at Harvest in San Francisco and have been hooked ever since. \r\n\r\nThe menthol and cannabinoids are effective in relieving my lower back pain, but what makes this cannabis topical stand out is its compact and discreet roll-on method of delivery. The convenience of this format allows for use during a long car ride or while at your desk at work, with hardly any smell.\r\n\r\nAfter rubbing this marijuana topical on my lower back, I find that it quickly warms the area and is very effective when I need fast pain relief. It smells mostly of mint and menthol. \r\n\r\nCurrently, I have three Lion Balms in my cannabis topical rotation, one for the car, one for the office, and one that stays in my coat pocket. At $8 each, it’s an easy decision to stock up on.\r\n\r\n### 3. Xternal Topical Cream: A Light & Non-Greasy Cannabis Lotion\r\n\r\nI’m a big fan of Xternal’s Topical due to its the light and creamy texture. I discovered Xternal while on a trip to a car dealer in Richmond. My back was acting up, so I stopped at the nearest dispensary to buy anything that would get rid of my pain. The budtender handed me a 4oz container of Xternal’s cannabis cream and I’ve kept that tub on my desk since.\r\n\r\nPrior to finding Xternal Cream, I had a bad experience with an oily marijuana topical that left several of my shirts stained. No dispensary I know of has a return policy, but I was about to try after throwing away some of my nicest clothes. Such is not the case with this marijuana topical. \r\n\r\nXternal’s cannabis topical is unscented and comparable to how a generic hand lotion might smell. I rub Xternal liberally onto my back until I’m sure it won’t spread over my shirt, and relax into my chair, confident that my pain will quickly subside. \r\n\r\n### Marijuana Topicals Can Help With Back Pain\r\n\r\nIf you struggle with back pain or any chronic localized pain, I’d highly recommend any of these marijuana topicals. They’re all easy to use, easy to transport and effective in a short space of time. Although everyone reacts differently to cannabis, anecdotally I’ve found that these topicals have a high rate of success for myself and those I know who use them. Here’s to you and a better, less painful back.\r\n\r\nPhoto credit: [Sava](https://www.getsava.com/shop/relief-balm/)\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Shingles is a remnant from this virus that lays dormant in the body and reactivates later in life. It causes a painful rash that usually appears on the torso, sometimes progressing into blisters and boils. Shingles can be extremely painful and causes a variety of sensations from burning to tingling to numbness. It also causes other symptoms like sensitivity, fever, headache, and fatigue. Long term pain can also persist, even after the rash has cleared from the body. \n\nShingles attacks the nerve cells, making it extremely hard to get relief from pain. Shingles can also block certain receptors that usually allow people to get relief from medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and opioids. Due to the inability for the receptors to be properly targeted by these medications, doses prescribed for people with shingles are often higher. High doses of pain relieving products like opioids can cause addiction and dependence, often doing more harm than good. \n\n### Cannabis Provides Relief\n\nEndocannabinoid receptors are found all over the body, so they are not blocked in the same way as other receptors, allowing for cannabis to provide pain relief in a way other products cannot. Cannabis also has neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties that can greatly reduce the pain and long-term effects caused by shingles. [A 2011 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3055736/) published in the journal _Neuropsychopharmacology_ found that cannabis had multifaceted nuero-protective effects. The study, which used animal models, found that this quality of cannabis was caused by the activation of CB1 receptors that helped prevent damage to nerves. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis is known for its effective analgesic qualities, especially in relation to neuropathic pain, which is the kind of pain most often caused by shingles. Neuropathic pain, which often doesn’t react to traditional pain relieving pharmaceuticals, can be greatly aided by THC, according to a [2009 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=shingles+and+cannabinoids) from _Neurotherapeutics_. A [2015 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25635955) from the _Journal of Oral and Facial Pain and Headache_ also showed that cannabinoids were effective at relieving neuropathic pain that did not respond to other treatments. The study was a review of various randomized placebo-controlled studies conducted starting in the 1950s, which all added support to the conclusion made by the review. The review also noted an overall improvement of sleep, nausea, anxiety, and appetite by patients who consumed cannabis in the studies. \n\n### Topicals: A Great Option\n\nTopical cannabis products are a great choice for people with shingles. Shingles pain is often located in specific areas, making it a great option for being targeted by topical cannabis medications. Cannabis topicals can come in the form of salves, creams, balms, or oils and they are absorbed through the skin. The topical products bond to CB2 receptors when they are absorbed into the skin and provide localized pain relief. There are many topicals on the market today, some favorites in California are Sweet ReLeaf, Flower Power and Xternal. \n\nTHC-infused topicals provide pain relieving properties without being psychoactive because they are not absorbed into the blood stream. Part 2","slug":"cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-2","content":"This is the continuation of ['Cannabis for Increased Passion & Play' Part 1](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-1).\n\n### Cannabis & Foreplay\n\nFirst things first, let’s do away with the term “foreplay” because sexual intimacy can be a delicious, lingered-over journey from start to finish. Intercourse or genital-sex do not have to be the main act, as there is so much to explore and enjoy as you traverse the whole arousal journey. \n\nSecond, women in particular need extra time to relax in order to activate their fullest sexual response. There are areas of the female brain that are associated with feelings of worry, stress, anxiety, and guilt, and these take quite a bit of time to come “offline.” \n\nAt the same time, the vast network of erectile tissue of the clitoris, rich in sensory nerves and seemingly-infinite capacity for pleasure, (and about the size of a penis, though mostly all internal), also takes time to fully engorge. \n\nAs we know, cannabis will activate a woman's relaxation response, so toking in the bathtub before her partner comes home is one way for a woman to prime her body for more pleasure. However, toking together can be a form of foreplay, a part of the sexual experience, which slows things down and allows the erotic energy to build. Passing a joint or sampling the flavors of the vape pen is a way to connect with your lover as you cultivate the senses. \n\nThere are also topicals, cannabis-infused creams and oils (like Arnicann) that are designed to be used on the skin to sooth aches, but can be used for massage and even hand-jobs, as long as condoms aren't used where there's been oils. \n\nMassage is a wonderful form of “foreplay” and it can feel as good to give as to receive. Just lose yourself in giving, without wondering if you’re doing it right, and check in here and there to receive feedback from your lover so you can adjust accordingly. Find topicals that are made from food-grade ingredients so you can lick and kiss the body parts you’ve been rubbing! \n\nTip: Breathe deeply as you immerse yourself in touching, making out, and other forms of sexy play; deep breaths intensify pleasureable sensations and emotions. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58922f0b189869000c9af616/embedded_images/58922f0e189869000c9af617/Screen_Shot_2017-02-01_at_10.52.57_AM.png)\n[Dee Dusault](https://www.deedussault.com/) is well known for her sexuality teaching which includes the use of cannabis.\n \n### Cannabis Lengthens Sexual Playtime\n\nYou can also use cannabis during the “valley” parts of sex, when the energy is less intense and you can rest and connect again, puff, and giggle, before getting down and dirty once more. \n\nCannabis, with its ability to stretch time, can help us to become lost in the intimacy, connection, and pleasure we can share with a partner (or enjoy with ourselves). Being high lends itself to slowing down and not chasing the “goal” of orgasm. Instead the goal becomes pleasure.\nWith cannabis, make-outs, cuddles, and love-making sessions become longer in duration, less goal-oriented, and as such, more of the brain chemical oxytocin gets released. This is the hormone responsible for feelings of trust, well-being and fulfillment. \n\nThe formulae for ganja-enhanced passion then looks like this: Cannabis = relaxation, + active relaxation cultivation (like yoga or a bath before sex) + mindfulness practice + good sexy play = longer good sexy play = more happy juice in the brain = more sexy play = more happy juice, in an endless loop of expanding pleasure.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIt’s no wonder Tantra Yoga considers sexual experience one of the foundational ways to attain enlightenment. \n\nTip: During a “valley” moment in sex, ask your partner to close their eyes and inhale as you press the cool metal mouthpiece of the vape pen to their lips. Closing the eyes enhances the other senses, so touch and taste become stronger. \n\n### What Strain or Dose?\n\nMake a sensual adventure of choosing strains, based on what you smell. Forgo delivery this Valentine’s, and take your date to a dispensary where they have nice big jars of cannabis, and take a big whiff of each one. The terpenes you like are probably medicinally helpful to you; your body is expressing it’s wisdom through these cravings and delights. \n\nBeginners might consider building a relationship to different cannabis strains before using it with sex. If you experiment and find you get agitated or anxious (or overly lethargic), that's not the strain for love making! Keep sampling, perhaps with masturbation, to see the sexy effect of each strain. There is no one best strain for sex, in my opinion, just many that can relax, arouse, and connect you. \n\nRELATED:[CANNABIS FOR INCREASED PASSION & PLAY! PART 1](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-1)\n\nRegarding dose, people new to cannabis, or who have been sensitive in the past, should start with a very low dose. I'm a fan of the principle of “minimum effective dose,” where we take the least amount of medicine needed to obtain the desired effect. It would be a waste of energy to use more muscular force than needed to chop firewood, for example, and there'd be physical consequences for overdoing it: sore muscles the next day. By the same token, there’s no need to get blotto stoned when using cannabis for sex. You can always add more! Low potency vaping (like Alchemy vape pens) helps to prevent over-doing it.\n\nTip: Each individual plant will affect your body and mind in its unique way, and this will change from time to time and plant to plant. One strain of Blue Dream might have slightly different genetics the next grow season. You might have different brain chemistry the next time you smoke it. By consuming less and going slow, you’ll be sure to ride the wave of the optimal cannabis high. \n\n### Lubrication with Cannabis\n\nNow you know why cannabis enhances passion and play, and you have some tips to make the most of it: Slowing down, being mindful, dropping goals, and immersing yourself in pleasure. \n\nA last word of advice: Make sure you have lots of water handy before things steam up. Cannabis can cause “dry mouth”, so by the same token, dryness in the vagina can also be a result. Even if you are going slow and savoring the “foreplay,” you might need to take hydration breaks or use additional lube to make sure there isn’t too much friction if you or your partner has a vagina. \n\n***********************************************************************\nIf you would like more inspiration, check out my Bay Area Valentines Tantra classes, sponsored by Alchemy Vape Pens by Dark Heart, [Kiva Chocolates](https://hellomd.com/brands/5787f6e054d3a610003b8948) and [Arnicann topicals!](http://www.goarnicann.com/ ) \n\nFriday night: [“Sexual Awakening Yoga”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sexy-flex-for-women-tickets-31203488474?utm_source=eb_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=new_event_email&utm_term=viewmyevent_button) class for women, Saturday afternoon: [“Partner Yoga for Love”](https://www.meetup.com/Ganja-Yoga/events/236974981/) and [“Partner Tantra Yoga and Massage.”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tantra-yoga-and-massage-sold-out-tickets-31204352057?utm_campaign=new_event_email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=eb_email&utm_term=viewmyevent_button) \n\nDee Dussault helps people find their bliss through relaxation, mindfulness, and sensuality. She is a Mom, cannabis lover and Director of Marketing at Alchemy by Dark Heart, an extremely popular vape company that combines \"The perfect blend for wellness.\" Happy holiday reading!\r\n\r\n### Holiday Cheer\r\n\r\nIt was Thanksgiving and my family was gathered at my Grandmother’s house anticipating our favorite meal of the year. Some of us were clinking glasses of rum and wine and catching up on the details of our lives. My younger cousins were huddled in the living room over a shared iPad screen playing Angry Birds. My uncles were convened in the living room, eyes fixed on the TV as the Steelers triumphed over the Colts. \r\n\r\nMy mother raised her glass and asked the family to join her in a toast. Everyone got up (with the exception of the kids). It was at that moment I noticed my uncle, still sitting in one of the recliners in the living room. Holding up a glass, with a look of embarrassment on his face I’d never seen before. I asked him later why he didn’t join us and he said very frankly, “Sciatica. It’s getting worse.” \r\n\r\n### Our Holiday Gift Guide\r\n\r\nThis year marks the first year in California that [marijuana consumption](http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/california-passes-recreational-marijuana-bill-prop-64-w448877) is legal for recreational use. So this year, instead of the typical bargain bin flannel pajamas and iTunes gift certificates, I’m going to gift my favorite people with something that will impact their wellness as well as their happiness. \r\n\r\nCheck out my suggestions for giving the gift of green this year to (almost) everyone on your list!\r\n\r\n### The Uncle With Nerve Pain\r\n\r\nEveryone has that uncle. He’s always manning the BBQ, he’s always got a dad joke on hand. Lately you’ve noticed him sitting more things out than usual and if pain is the reason - consider gifting him with something he likely wouldn’t get himself. Perhaps he’s a little on the conservative side or on the fence about cannabis smokables. \r\n\r\nTry asking your local dispensary about cannabis topicals. The beauty of cannabis topicals is that despite usually being very potent and chock-full of THC and CBD - they don’t cause a high. Your uncle can rub a little cannabis cream on his sore areas and no one will be the wiser - except you. His new favorite relative.\r\n\r\n### The Zen Best Friend\r\n\r\nHe wakes up in the morning in full sun salutation and loves quoting Buddha and Lao Tzu. This friend is all about good vibes. Indica strains are known for having calming and relaxing effects, great for evening use and the perfect pairing for a yoga or meditation session. Try a vaporizer pen with cannabis oil that has been infused with stress relieving notes like lavender and chamomile and other botanical essences like those in [Alchemy by Dark Heart vape pens](http://www.darkheartalchemy.com/learn-more/). Sure to help your bestie get through the rest of the winter season with a well-balanced aura.\r\n\r\n### The Busy Mom Who Never Sleeps\r\n\r\nEveryone knows a super mom. No one is sure how they do it. Up early and on the go until the wee hours. She might spend countless nights lying awake unable to drift off to sleep, wrought with a full mind. According to [The Atlantic](http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/08/americans-are-getting-worse-at-taking-sleeping-pills/375935/), over 50 million Americans suffer from insomnia and you know your favorite multi-tasking mama is one of them. This year, give her the gift of sleep. Check out brands that offer cannabis oil capsules or tinctures she can keep stashed in the nightstand for a restful sleep. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [THE ALCHEMY HOLIDAY WELLNESS PACK](http://www.darkheartalchemy.com/hellomdholiday/?utm_source=HelloMDHoliday&utm_campaign=HelloMDHoliday)\r\n\r\nBeing on-the-go means occasionally needing to take the edge off. Alchemy by Dark Heart vape pens carry a lower dose of THC. This is ideal for Mom’s who need to stay sharp but don’t want an overpowering effect. Mint and citrus in the Awaken pen, for instance, work as a stimulant to provide the perfect pick-me up for the morning dash. \r\n### The Newly-Legal College-Bound Cousin\r\n\r\nShe just turned 21 and still buzzing from the vibes of her newly found adulthood. Give her a sample of a marijuana strain someone with a paper deadline can appreciate. Consider strains like Sour Tangie and Sour Diesel, good for finding focus, energizing the mind and lifting the spirits. These Sativa strains are a great alternative for coffee-junkies and tend to be ideal for those oft necessary “wake and bake” mornings or long cram sessions. Vaporizers are great for the novice user or for those who need to remain highly functional throughout the day.\r\n\r\n### The Sweet Tooth\r\n\r\nEveryone knows someone who never seems to be too far from a plate of fresh baked cookies or a delicious slice of cake. For the sweet chaser in your life, stuff their stocking with a few choice cannabis edibles. Browse your local dispensary and be sure to ask about potency. Cannabis edibles tend to come with a pretty intense high, and are definitely not for the cannabis-weary. Pass on any directions when you give this gift to ensure they get the desired effect.\r\n\r\n### The Avid Coffee Drinker\r\n\r\nShe’s never far from her favorite coffee mug, or her favorite coffee shop. You would usually get a well stocked gift certificate to Starbucks, but this year - change things up a bit. For the coffee lover in your life, try a cannabis-infused coffee product. This ancient tradition has been around since the 16th century. \r\n\r\nDosage is again something you want to carefully consider, but there are plenty of low-dose options for someone new to cannabis. Remember to look for a Sativa infused coffee for morning consumption and an Indica infused coffee for the evening. \r\n\r\n### Give the Gift of Green\r\n\r\nAs cannabis legality grows in the US, the industry will begin to touch those who may not have considered marijuana to be the missing solution to their every day ailments. Whether its an avid pot smoker, a consistent conservative or just a very open minded wellness seeker - you’ll be sure to thrill unsuspecting gift receivers. \r\n\r\nMore importantly, you could be the reason someone in your life finds chemical-free, holistic support for pain that may be negatively shaping their lives. Sometimes, all it takes is a little nudge (under the guise of fancy wrapping paper). \r\n\r\nFor more tips or to answer your cannabis questions check out the HelloMD question forums or speak to your local dispensary. We like to call it intelligent medicine.”\n\nIn this piece, Didi talks about how cannabis topicals can help ease the pain and swelling caused by arthritis.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Medical Cannabis Helps Arthritis Patients Recover & Heal\n\nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 50% of people over the age of 65 in the U.S. will be diagnosed with [arthritis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5aecf518b869a6000796590b/treating-arthritis-pain-via-the-endocannabinoid-system). Although arthritic pain is also diagnosed in hundreds of thousands of children under the age of 18, most arthritis patients are retirement age or older. \n\nArthritis commonly affects the hands and feet, with the exception of osteoarthritic pain, which causes hip pain and stiffness. The term arthritis refers to more than 100 joint conditions that cause stiffness, mild to severe pain, swelling and sometimes deformity. There’s no cure for arthritis (except gout).\n\nHowever, breakthrough studies have linked cannabis as a contender for even the most powerful prescription drugs. Medical marijuana has an advantage that painkillers don’t have: It works with the patient's body to help them recover instead of just masking the symptoms of arthritis.\n\n### The Many Types of Arthritis\n\nDespite the daunting number of arthritis forms, they can be categorized by one of the following types:\n\n* Inflammatory arthritis\n* Degenerative of mechanical arthritis\n* Soft-tissue musculoskeletal pain\n* Back pain\n* Connective tissue disease\n* Infectious arthritis\n* Metabolic arthritis\n\nArthritis in its various forms affects patients in different ways and carries with it different symptoms. This means that there’s no one way to treat it. \n\nRELATED: [TREATING ARTHRITIS PAIN VIA THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5aecf518b869a6000796590b/treating-arthritis-pain-via-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\n### Traditional Arthritis Pain Management Medications\n\nPrescription drugs are the most common treatment for arthritis pain management. These prescription treatments can help reduce pain and treat symptoms such as swelling, stiffness and tenderness. Various types of medications are administered depending on what type of arthritis a person is dealing with.\n\n#### Prednisone\n\nPrednisone is an oral steroid prescribed to reduce inflammation in arthritis patients. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, restlessness and weight gain. It’s most commonly prescribed as a short-term therapy due to the severity of its side effects.\n\n#### Acetaminophen & Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs\n\nAcetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are common over-the-counter medications prescribed to relieve pain. Acetaminophen, though effective in treating arthritic pain, doesn’t address the accompanying inflammation. NSAIDs, though used to treat pain and inflammation, are processed through the liver; therefore, continued use can cause serious damage to this organ.\n\n#### Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs\n\nDisease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are often used by patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This medication essentially slows the progression of the disease by acting on the immune system. Side effects include upset stomach, bone marrow and liver damage, and shortness of breath. \n\n### Alternative Pain Management Options for Arthritis\n\nFor patients who seek alternative treatments for their arthritis, there are a few options that have proven to be effective, especially when accompanied by overall lifestyle changes. Exploring alternative treatments can help a patient live a normal life and even enjoy an active one.\n\n**Acupuncture** is an ancient Chinese method of healing. Practitioners use extremely tiny needles to trigger points in the body that release endorphins where it’s needed the most. \n\n**Hot and cold therapies** provide temporary relief from the burning sensations and stiffness that come with arthritis. Cold compresses, soaking in a hot shower or using hot paraffin wax can ease pain and/or swelling and increase blood circulation. \n\nOther alternative therapies include:\n\n* Yoga\n* Meditation\n* Electrotherapy\n* Nutritional supplements such as turmeric or fish oil, which are natural anti-inflammatories\n\n### Study Shows Cannabis Reduces Arthritis Pain\n\nMedical marijuana has the ability to treat the entire body without debilitating side effects—and often without any side effects at all. Cannabis is a known analgesic, with powerful pain-reducing components that rival prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.\n\nA study funded by Arthritis Research UK that’s specifically meant to identify how cannabis works in arthritis patients has begun to make a clear connection between marijuana and pain. In this study, scientists examined nerve cells called CB2 receptors and found that activating specific marijuana pathways produced an anti-inflammatory effect. This is a groundbreaking clinical discovery, since inflammation is a major hindrance for patients with arthritic pain. These patients often rely on harmful prescription drugs for relief.\n\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & ARTHRITIS ANSWERED](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a720780f24d1300077ccb25/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-arthritis-answered)\n\n### Cannabis Topicals Can Help Alleviate Arthritis Symptoms\n\nCannabis topicals provide a unique solution for patients with arthritis, mainly because their side effects are nonexistent. With proper and regular use, cannabis topicals can:\n\n* relieve arthritis pain almost immediately\n* reduce inflammation that accompanies arthritic joints\n* gradually restore mobility in arthritis patients who’ve been forced to live a stationary life \n\nCannabis topicals don’t travel through the bloodstream, as is the case with ingestion and inhalation. Therefore, marijuana-infused topicals don’t produce a euphoric high. Patients who use cannabis topicals can essentially apply their product to the desired area and return to their activities without interruption. Whether they operate heavy machinery, work in a corporate environment or care for children during the day, folks with arthritis find cannabis topicals can often be a life-changing therapy with none of the psychoactivity that comes with consuming cannabis, specifically tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\n\n### Arthritis Patients Can Start by Consulting With a Cannabis Doctor\n\nThe best thing to do is to speak to a health-care professional who understands how cannabis works with the body. A great place to start would be by requesting a consultation with a doctor on HelloMD. Ask any questions you have concerning products to try, how to take them and how they may affect your life. If you’re recommended to receive medical marijuana, you can order a product from Sweet ReLeaf to reduce your arthritic pain and inflammation.\n\nThe best advice for anyone living with arthritis pain is to explore all possible options before resorting to the prescription drug path. Cannabis provides a treatment option that works with your body to heal. This can mean the difference between taking one medication after another to combat pain and medication side effects, and living a life unencumbered by joint pain.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Andrea is the founder of [Sava](https://www.getsava.com), the premier marketplace for high-quality, hand-crafted cannabis goods. Sava offers next day delivery for patients throughout California and is one of the newest collectives gaining a passionate following of enthusiastic medicinal cannabis patients. Andrea is extremely knowledgeable about how to use cannabis for pain and below she shares her personal story.\r\n\r\n**A Journey from Pain to Wellness**\r\n\r\nMy personal journey into the cannabis industry started with my own pain. Several years ago I was the program director for a San Francisco human and social services nonprofit, doing a job that I absolutely loved, when an injury caused systemic nerve damage and prevented me from being able to sit and use the computer for the long hours required, as well as other routine daily activities. The two years that followed were some of the harder times of my life, while I struggled to find a new way of caring for my body--one that would allow me to be pain free. \r\n\r\nLiving with chronic pain required me to do a lot of research and learning, and a lot of experimentation. I quickly realized that the side effects from pharmaceuticals were best avoided and thus began my trial and error with alternative forms of medicine. I always knew smoking cannabis could alleviate pain, but I’ve since learned that there is so much more to using cannabis than simply picking up a joint. Ultimately, cannabis and a solid self-care routine is what brought me back to health. \r\n\r\n**Beyond the Smoke**\r\n\r\nAt first I turned to smoking flower for pain relief. It did wonders--especially now that there is so much information available on strain types. The only downside of the some of the flower was I felt too high. I wanted to get back to life as usual and although I’ve always enjoyed smoking a joint from time to time, I’ve never been an all day every day smoker. I needed to find a way to manage my pain and stay more clear-minded. \r\n\r\nAs the medical cannabis industry has grown, we’ve seen an explosion in other methods of consumption. Learning about these products gave me a vast toolkit. Edibles and tinctures offer a discreet, easy to measure dose of cannabis available in many configurations. Some are low-dose, some are for sleep, some are high-CBD, and the list goes on. These products have been life-savers. But by far one class of products has helped me day in and day out more than any other is topicals. \r\n\r\n**Topicals - What Are They?**\r\n\r\nTopicals are a way to apply cannabis directly to your skin. Formulas come in many forms including oils, balms, salves, and lotion bars. Topicals are not psychoactive so you will not feel high after using them. \r\n\r\n**How Do They Work?** \r\n\r\nApplying a topical is a transdermal method of ingesting cannabis - meaning it goes through your skin. They work by binding to a network of receptors called CB2 that are found throughout the body and are activated either by the body’s naturally-occurring endocannabinoids or by cannabis compounds known as phytocannabinoids. \r\n\r\nWhen you apply most topicals, the cannabinoids don’t enter the bloodstream so you will not have a psychoactive experience. The two exceptions are with transdermal patches, which will deliver THC to the bloodstream and can cause psychoactive effects and cannabis-infused soaks, which allow THC to be absorbed through the colon. However, with lotions, salves, and the like, you can use them to relieve pain in a specific area while going about your day. \r\n\r\n**Penetration vs. Absorption** \r\n\r\nIn skincare, there is a difference between penetration and absorption. Skin penetration refers to the amount of a topically applied compound that exists between the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum, and the bottom layer of skin, the stratum basale. During penetration, the body does not absorb the compound so it does not affect the body systems. Skin absorption refers to the process where the compound breaks the skin barrier and enters the bloodstream. \r\n\r\nMany factors influence penetration and absorption, including how thick the skin is in the area a formula is applied and the type of formula being applied. Most topicals will not pass the skin barrier and absorb into the bloodstream, but patches, for example, have been made with molecules small enough to do so. \r\n\r\n**Body Oils, Lotions and Salves**\r\n\r\nThrough my experimentation, I found each of these formulas have their own purposes. \r\n\r\nBody Oils - Coupling cannabis with self-massage (or massage from someone else if you’re lucky) can dramatically increase the therapeutic effects. Body oils stay on the skin long enough to provide lubrication for deeper massage, releasing of knots and tension. \r\n\r\nSalves and Balms - These absorb into the skin a bit faster and they are less messy to use, making them my go to for portable relief. Keeping a jar in my purse to apply as needed has been a lifesaver on many occasions. Salves and balms provide enough oil for some massage, but will sink into your skin faster than oil. \r\n\r\nBody Butters - Butters are one step down on the oily scale from salves and balms. Another great choice for relief on the go, body butters made with a natural butter base such as mango, shea, or cocoa. In my experience, the natural butters carry enough scent that they are the predominant smell, not the cannabis. \r\n\r\nLotions - the lightest in texture and oiliness, these will penetrate your skin the fastest. They are not good for massage, but they are great if you want to apply something under your clothes that will leave no mess. \r\n\r\nLotion Bars - lotion bars are solid bars that melt when applied to skin. Often made from a combination of natural butters and oils, these are great for an at home massage treatment. \r\n\r\nSoaks - A newer trend on the cannabis market are bath salts and bath bombs. Fill your tub, add the product, and soak. While you’re relaxing in the tub, the cannabis is penetrating your outer skin layers while also being absorbed by your colon. This leaves you with a very light psychoactive experience that is somewhere between very calm and slightly high. \r\n\r\n**...That Smells Nice**\r\n\r\nSome topicals have stronger cannabis scents than others. There are several options that do not smell like cannabis at all, offering you relief in places where you’d prefer not to unleash the smell of cannabis. Some companies add additional ingredients, such as wintergreen, eucalyptus, and lavender add to the experience. Some topicals are heating and some are cooling. Try a few to find your favorites. \r\n\r\n**What Can I Use Them For?** \r\n\r\nFor Inflammation and Arthritis - CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. If you’d like to combat inflammation or pain related to arthritis, look for a high CBD topical. \r\n\r\nFor Cramps - Topicals calm menstrual cramps. I’ve found body oils to be very effective, especially if applied to both the lower back and lower abdomen and paired with a hot water bottle. \r\n\r\nFor Sore Muscles - Soaking after a workout or self-massage with an oil will leave you less sore the next day. \r\n\r\nFor Better Sleep - a thorough rub down before bed with any topical makes me sleep more soundly. My body relaxes more deeply as I drift off into my dreams. \r\n\r\n**A Self-Care Routine**\r\n\r\nFinding a way to handle pain that didn’t make me high was a game-changer. But cannabis alone is not a magic bullet. Developing a self-care routine was invaluable to my recovery. For some techniques, such as massage, pairing with cannabis magnified the healing effects. \r\n\r\nStretching - Developing a 10-15 minute routine at the beginning and end of your day can make a world of difference. Luckily, the internet abounds with yoga and stretching videos if you’d like inspiration. \r\n\r\nMovement - A vital part of each day, especially if your job requires you to sit in one place. A brief daily walk or getting up once per hour move a bit will make the world of difference. Topical balm can be used in advance of any activity to loosen muscles, as well as be applied afterwards to soothe soreness.\r\n\r\nMassage and other Body Work - Massage alone is magnificently healing. Pairing it with a cannabis brings another level of relaxation. While a professional body worker will reach very deep levels of healing, self-massage on a regular basis is also fantastic. \r\n\r\nMini Foot Spa - While integrating massage into your life is a worthwhile luxury due to the health benefits, it’s not always possible to get a massage. Doing your own mini foot spa is another at-home, accessible self-care routine. Our feet carry so much tension a foot spa can release. Try a cannabis soak and rub some bath salts into your feet to exfoliate. Follow with an oil applied with massage. If you want to take it to another level, look at a reflexology chart and target areas specific to your tension. \r\n\r\nTake A Minute to Breathe - Much like stretching, just a few minutes each day makes a world of difference. While I was initially skeptical, meditation taught me a way to stay grounded during a flare up. I developed a pre-meditation ritual of rubbing some of my favorite scented topical into my temples and neck beforehand, helping me to settle in. \r\n\r\nAs I’ve come to find is often the case for providers of cannabis medicine, it was my own discovery of the vast and varied healing properties of this plant that inspired me to share it with others. As a result, my normal exercise regime wasn’t an option. So now that I’ve started back up with early morning boot camp and daily hikes, my muscles have been screaming. After my first few days back at it, I can barely walk, feel hobbled and the aching muscles leave me seriously cranky. Could a marijuana topical balm help relieve my tired sore muscles? The answer is, as you may have guessed, yes.\n\n### What Are Cannabis Balms?\n\nMarijuana topicals can come in the form of a salve, cream or even oil. They're meant to be applied to the skin and provide localized relief for pain. Pain may be from nerves, arthritis, inflammation and general soreness, among other conditions. The benefit of a topical for many patients is that it can provide pain relief without creating a sense of being high. \n\nCannabis-infused balms work by absorbing through the skin and binding to our CB2 receptors, which are found throughout the body. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), along with other cannabinoids, have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect on the body once they come into contact with these receptors. In general, topicals won’t get into the blood stream, which is one of the reasons you don’t get high when using them.\n\nTransdermal patches are another way to administrater medical marijuana. And since transdermals actually do get into the blood stream, they’re somewhat different from topicals.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### My Top 4 Marijuana Topicals\n\nCannabis salves are said to help with sore muscles, back pain, arthritis and many other aches and pains. I’ve used different balms to help me with acute lower back pain, sore muscles, tendonitis and bursitis in my hips. Many marijuana topicals on the market today carry some of the same ingredients found within drugstore muscle creams, including eucalyptus, camphor, menthol and others. \n\nThere are a couple of downsides to using topicals; many smell like cannabis and they can often feel greasy due to their carrier oils. Although there’s little to no research on topicals, anecdotally I found that people who use cannabis topicals uniformly seem to like or love them.\n\nAs you may know, numerous marijuana balms are out on the market, and many that I’ve yet to try. That said, I'm going to tell you about four topicals that I use and like. \n\n### Sweet Releaf Cannabis Body Butter\n\nI’m going to start with this cannabis body butter from [Sweet ReLeaf](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/56dddcac02baab0008000042/sweet-releaf/products), because I absolutely love it. It has a creamy texture, doesn’t smell like cannabis and provides fast relief from sore muscles.\n\nI was barely able to walk after my workout, my quads were so sore, and a colleague at work mentioned this wonder cream. I happened to have a sample size at home, so I popped it open, and with the smallest amount it went straight to work. Within half an hour my pain had decreased significantly.\n\nA 1 oz jar is $20, which may seem pricey, but a little goes a long way. I’m now a huge fan and plan to buy this one in bulk.\n\nA testimonial on the Sweet Releaf site states, “Sweet ReLeaf is the most effective pain-relieving cream I have ever used. The smell is pleasant and enchanting and it has a nice body feel. When I have sore muscles, I rub it in and the pain and discomfort melts away.” I have to say, I back this statement up with my own experience.\n\n### The Original Kind Rub Cannabis Menthol Formula\n\n[The Kind Rub](http://kindmedicineproducts.com/) is a very popular brand I've seen in many dispensaries. I’ve used this balm for some time, and it works well. When my back hurts after a workout, I put some on and find that it definitely lessens the pain.\n\nThat said, the smell of this balm is very powerful—you wouldn’t want to go on a date after using it. It also has a greenish hue that makes me think of the Wicked Witch of the West. This salve has a fantastic ingredient list, which includes eucalyptus, rosemary, sage, lavender and chamomile, among other natural herbs.\n\nOn the product page for this product, Kind Medicine says, “Great for arthritis, bone and muscle pain, backaches, neck aches, gout, chest congestion, sore feet, dry skin, and much more. Apply to the affected area as often as needed. You won’t experience any THC side effects, only the soothing comfort of being free of pain.”\n\n### Xternal Topical Balm\n\nAgain, this seems to be a popular cannabis balm that’s carried by many dispensaries. The packaging feels very generic, but I suppose it’s about what’s inside that matters.\n\nThat said, I’ve carried this in my purse for the past few months. When I’ve had a really sore muscle, it seems to help. It tends to be on the greasier side of topicals, so you need to rub this one in well.\n\nThe Xternal site says it helps combat many conditions and that, “Xternal Balm is a non-petroleum-jelly topical rub with our proprietary active ingredients. This formula was originally designed for MMA fighters who found it greatly improved recovery time.” \n\n### HerbaBuena Body Balm Topical Cannabis Rub\n\nI keep the HerbaBuena body balm on my bedside table. HerbaBuena pays particular attention to the quality of the cannabis it uses, and I appreciate this very much.\n\nThe balm has a very distinctive smell—it’s sort of planty-medicinal, which I happen to like. It has a yellowish hue and feels a bit grainy, so you also need to really rub it in before you can put clothes on over it. The jar’s description states that it contains 1,000 mg of THC, so a little goes a long way.\n\nOn the HerbaBuna site, it says, “Our proprietary blend of oils eases all types of muscle and joint pain, and has been reported to be particularly effective as a sports rub and for assisting with arthritis. Starring critically extracted cannabis as well as oils of coconut, jojoba and avocado, cacao butter and beeswax.”\n\nHopefully this list gives you a good place to start if you want to explore how marijuana topicals can help your sore muscles.
