I remember the first time I saw Dr. Sanjay Gupta talk about CBD in his revolutionary CNN documentary, “Weed.” In it, he visits Charlotte, a small child who suffers from life-threatening seizures due to [Dravet Syndrome](https://www.epilepsy.com/learn/types-epilepsy-syndromes/dravet-syndrome).\n\nAfter years of treatment, Charlotte wasn’t responding positively to traditional medications and in at least one instance, the pharmaceuticals she was prescribed almost killed her. According to her doctor, the only thing Charlotte hadn’t tried was cannabis.\n\nUpon taking medical marijuana, specifically cannabis oil that was high in the non-psychoactive CBD, Charlotte’s seizures were dramatically reduced. If you’ve heard of the high-CBD marijuana strain called Charlotte’s Web, it’s actually named after, and was originally bred for, that same little girl.\n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxrKyjeClTk`\n\n### My CBD Success Story\n\n[CBD changed my life by preventing debilitating migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5833c3741acf3d000ce08758/how-to-stop-migraines) that had plagued me for 25 years. Fortunately for me, a friend recommended I try medical marijuana and after consuming cannabis high in CBD, I was able to both manage my pain and ultimately prevent my migraines altogether—without the side effects commonly associated with traditional pharmaceuticals prescribed for migraines. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is CBD Anyway?\n\nCBD has been a game changer for me—and for millions of other people, too. But what exactly is CBD? Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid, or compound, within the cannabis plant that’s non-psychoactive and contains many medicinal properties. CBD is also an:\n\n* Anti-emetic\n* Anti-spasmodic \n* Neuroprotectant shown to “[have an effect on some of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease](https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/info/20074/alternative_therapies/488/cannabis_for_the_treatment_or_prevention_of_dementia)” \n* [Effective pain reliever](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5980e279f15fe13b757557d3/largest-cbd-usage-study-published-by-hellomd-with-brightfield-group)\n* Anxiety-reducing compound \n* Anti-inflammatory, so it may help with autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease\n* Sleep aid\n\nRELATED: [WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT CANNABIDIOL, OR CBD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8dafa0f24d1300077ccb59/whats-so-great-about-cannabidiol-or-cbd)\n\n### What to Look for When Shopping for CBD\n\nIt’s important when selecting a CBD product to understand the difference between “CBD-rich” and “CBD-dominant.” CBD-rich implies that a product has 1:1 ratio of CBD to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). For some people, this may lead to mild psychoactivity if ingested. (This doesn’t hold true for a cannabis topical such as a lotion, cream or salve, which is absorbed into the skin but doesn’t reach the bloodstream.) \n\nA CBD-dominant product will predominantly contain CBD with less THC. In most cases, this will mean no psychoactivity. What’s psychoactive for one person may not be for another, but a general rule is that borderline psychoactivity starts at a 3:1 or 1:1 ratio of CBD to THC.\n\n### My Top 5 CBD Products\n\nFrom general health and wellness to serious medical conditions, CBD seems to be flexing her muscles, and people across the globe are noticing. As I’m always on the lookout for the CBD products that people are talking about most, below is a roundup of my favorite CBD products available in California today.\n\n#### 1. No. 20 CBD Rich Cannabis Tincture\n\n![20:1 CBD tincture from Treatwell](https://hellomd-development.imgix.net/product-image-ecb45622-281f-48a9-aa1b-1fb9430999f2/original.jpg?auto=compress&bg=ffffff&dpr=2&fit=fill&h=145&q=100&w=345)\n\nRosette Wellness features a [20:1 tincture](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5c6c98749fcb5d8d3bf3df2b/no-20-cbd-rich-cannabis-tincture). This has been my go-to for preventing my migraines, and overall has been my favorite tincture I’ve tried to date. The taste is very mild, compared to some tinctures that can have a strong aftertaste. I also like that it doesn’t make me sleepy, as some CBD tinctures can. For a CBD-dominant product, this is my favorite, although I’m also a huge fan of the [Wellness Cannabis Tincture](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5c6c9b099fcb5d56b3f3df6d/wellness-cannabis-tincture), which contains CBD and the lesser-known marijuana compound cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), as well as THC and tetrahydrocannabolic acid (THCA).\n#### 2. 4:1 CBD Disposable Vape Pen from DomPen\n\n![CBD disposable vape pen from DomPen](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5ac54033f24d1300077ccbbc-f771d557-a79b-4374-9a86-cf3f6f0bcaa9/original.jpg)\n\nThe first time I tried the 4:1 disposable vape pen from DomPen, I knew I’d found the right disposable vape pen for me. I’m a THC lightweight, so I always opt for high-CBD ratios when it comes to vaping or smoking. This pen not only tastes amazing, but for me, it creates a light and open feeling. It’s both uplifting and relaxing, which is a hard combination to find. I feel like it truly balances me, no matter what mood I’m in.\n\n#### 3. Sympa-Tea High-CBD Tea from Kikoko\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BgzP9r_FvCS/` \n\nLet me start by saying that Kikoko is as much a tea company as a cannabis brand. Their tea is one of the most flavorful teas I’ve ever tried and in my mind rivals the depth of flavor found in the non-medicated tea brands Mighty Tea and Republic of Tea. I first tried [Sympa-Tea](https://www.hellomd.com/products/58dc030bdd20d30047093924/sympa-tea) after a tough day on the ski slopes. I’d fallen hard on a patch of ice, and I was feeling it. After drinking a mug of Sympa-Tea, I didn’t feel the soreness and felt extremely relaxed—so much so that I took a luxurious two-hour nap. \n\n#### 4. Medical Cannabis CBD 28:1 Pre-Rolls from Garden Society\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg1berml8gS/` \n\nGarden Society’s high CBD pre-rolls are not only cute as a button but great quality cannabis with a lovely flavor. It’s not always easy to find high-CBD pre-rolls, and this 28:1 ratio makes it stand out. The cannabis in the pre-rolls comes from a partner farm in Sonoma County and is a unique cross of the classic CBD strains [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cbe97d520d60009f4f4a5/acdc) and Otto. Awakening the mind and providing the body with relief from daily pains and stress, these whole flower cones are a reviving way to enjoy the wellness benefits of cannabis while maintaining a clear head. \n\n#### 5. CBD-Rich Salted Caramel Almonds in Dark Chocolate from Satori\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BgjxbxaFaMS/`\n\nI must admit that there’s always a box of these [Satori chocolate almonds](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5865924ed5402d000882a308/salted-caramel-almonds-in-dark-chocolate) on my desk. They’re truly delicious and taste like an artisanal chocolate confection. What’s most notable about the almonds is the lack of cannabis flavor or marijuana aftertaste, which is present in many cannabis edibles. Each almond has 6 mg of CBD and .6 mg of THC, which in my case allows me to eat more than one at a time. My experience is that after 2–3 almonds I feel a sense of relaxation and get to satisfy my sweet tooth at the same time. The first time I tried these, they were so good, and I was on a long train ride—I finished the entire box, which left me a little too relaxed. That was when my love affair with these chocolate almonds began.\n\nIf you want the benefits of CBD without psychoactivity, give one of these products a try. Patients usually have a hard time controlling movement—tremors and limb rigidity are the most visible symptoms of this disease, but because dopamine regulates many facets of behavior, less visible symptoms like depression, anxiety and difficulty thinking are also common. \n\nThere’s no cure for Parkinson’s disease, and traditional management methods involve surgery and medications to both relieve symptoms and supply the body with dopamine. In addition to these methods, some patients are now using marijuana to help manage their symptoms. The duo’s nutrient-dense, paleocentric edibles are a good fit for Parkinson’s patients who often suffer from malabsorption, she adds. \n\nLiz works closely with Parkinson’s disease patients, helping them hone in on “the rhythm of their body,” while Jamel devises workouts that help them improve their balance and core stability. Their clients use their cookies to relieve pain, help them sleep and as a part of a healthy diet to reduce inflammation. Some favorites include their Cosmic Cacao Peppermint Cookie and CBD-rich [Chocolate Chip Solar Flare Cookie](https://moonmansmistress.com/store/solar-flare-chocolate-chip/), though Liz says that each of her clients has different preferences and needs. \n\nRELATED: [HOW PARKINSON’S DISEASE AFFECTS THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a2f25ba100a820006562ebe/how-parkinsons-disease-affects-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\n### 2. Mary’s Medicinals Transdermal Patch\n\n![Mary's Medicinals Transdermal Cannabis Patch](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a68cddb8425e40008273a3a-9ae3dfdf-339a-461d-92b8-dd5668415f4d/original.png)\n\n* **Available in:** Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, Washington \n* **Best used for:** Day or night time \n* **Similar products:** [Siva Hemp Patch], [Pure Ratios](https://www.hellomd.com/products/58e416c95b0b9a14174f2c42/1-1-cbd-thc-cannabis-based-patch)\n\nTransdermal patches are a discreet option for pain relief—they release small amounts of medication into the bloodstream over a long period of time. “Transdermal patches differ from topical creams in that the medicine goes through all seven epidermal layers of skin and enters directly into the bloodstream. Transdermal patches deliver systematic rather than localized relief,” says a Mary’s Medicinals representative. \n\n[Mary’s Medicinals](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/563d168959fa6800080000c9/cannabis-transdermal-patches-easy-to-use-and-effective-for-pain) offers a variety of patches in CBD, THC, CBN, THCA and CBD-THC combinations. Patches, which can be worn as you go about your day, don’t normally impart any kind of high, even if the patch has THC. However, everyone is different so if you’re sensitive to THC, it might be a good idea to do a test run at home, use THC patches at night, or stick with a CBD- or THCA-only patch. \n\n### 3. Wellness Cannabis Tincture\n\n![Rosette Wellness Tincture](\nhttps://hellomd-development.imgix.net/product-image-4dbe5c4b-461c-490a-a582-bd0d701e6c1e/original.jpg?auto=compress&bg=ffffff&dpr=2&fit=fill&h=245&q=100&w=345)\n\n* **Available in:** California\n* **Best used for:** Day time\n* **Similar products:** Emerald Alchemy THCA tincture, Alta California Botanicals Pain Relief Tincture\n\nThis tincture blends THCA and CBDA, acids high in antioxidants and terpene content. The key ingredient here is THCA, often overshadowed by CBD and THC. THCA has shown great medicinal promise in lab research. It’s known to have anti-inflammatory properties and help with nausea. In a study involving mice cells, THCA protected brain cells that make dopamine from [neurotoxins](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22571976)—a finding that’s good news for Parkinson’s patients, although more research needs to be done.\n\nTHCA is usually found in raw cannabis leaves. However, Rosette makes a tincture with the phytocannabinoid. THCA will not cause consumners to feel high like THC can, so this is a good option for daytime use. Jan Lavelle, a Parkinson’s patient who consumes THCA advises to take a dropperful three times a day, saying that it takes a while to build up in your system—in other words, you may not feel the effects right away. “You really have to commit to it,” she says. \n\n### 4. Care By Design Sublingual Drops and Sprays\n\n![Care by Design Sublingual Marijuana Products](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a68cddb8425e40008273a3a-7a2184b2-2a83-4406-8de5-f1d5f0412cd3/original.png)\n\n* **Available in:** California\n* **Best used for:** Day time \n* **Similar products:** PharmaCannis Cultivation Tinctures (available in New York) \n\nWith a variety of consumption options and a good selection of CBD-to-THC ratios, [Care By Design](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/585b1fa58b61a100115fa333/care-by-design) products are a great option for the cannabis newbie. Users can experiment with different tinctures, sprays and ratios to see what suits their needs. \n\nJan, who uses these products, suggests that folks with Parkinson’s disease looking to try CBD start with three ratios: 18:1, 8:1, and 4:1. She advises new users to start with the highest CBD-to-THC ratio for three days and to move to the next highest, if they don’t feel anything. Jan herself does three, half-dropperfuls a day of an 8:1 ratio. Like THCA, CBD takes a while to build up in your system—Jan says it took about a month before she noticed any effects. \n\n### 5. Sweet Releaf Extra Strength Body Butter\n\n![Sweet ReLeaf Cannabis Body Butter](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5a68cddb8425e40008273a3a-1a4f9f9e-43b2-4c8e-8584-df7fc33dfa3e/original.png)\n\n* **Available in:** California\n* **Best used for:** Day or night time \n* **Similar products:** Aunt Zelda’s Organic Coconut Topical, HerbaBuena Body Balm\n\nSalves are different from transdermal patches—they don’t get into the bloodstream, so they don’t typically have psychoactive effects, even if they have THC. This salve from Sweet Releaf is a great option for chronic pain and muscle cramps often experienced by those with Parkinson’s disease, plus it can be used any time of day. \n\nMany of the products listed are only available in California, although we do our best to mention similar products that might be available in other locations.
