For vape enthusiasts, using a cartridge provides a level of convenience along with a way to control the dosage. And it makes consuming the plant more discreet than smoking a joint or pipe is.\n\nFor first-time or infrequent cannabis consumers, the care and use of cartridges can be a bit confusing. And many people wonder how long a cartridge will—or should—last them. \n\nLet’s break down the basics of marijuana vaporizer cartridges to understand how long a vape cartridge may last for you. \n\n![Hello1-min (3).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_3_b9423d027b.png)\n\n### A Quick Marijuana Vape Pen Primer\n\nMany people are discovering cannabis concentrates. The sales numbers for these golden-colored oils are racing ahead of that of cannabis flowers for several reasons:\n\n* There are typically higher levels of concentrated cannabinoids in extracted cannabis oil *vs.* that of marijuana flower. \n* Unlike smoking cannabis flower from a pipe, bong or in a joint, vaping cannabis concentrates means you aren’t combusting cannabis plant material. This is healthier for the lungs and also helps keep the healing cannabinoids intact. \n* The exhaled marijuana vapor has very little scent. And the far-less-pungent smell from a vape pen, as opposed to the odor of combusted cannabis flower, dissipates almost immediately.\n* Standard vape pens are discreet—generally resembling a slightly thick pen, making them easy to carry and store.\n\nReusable marijuana vape cartridges screw into a rechargeable, lithium ion battery that powers a heating element, resulting in vaporization and not smoke. High-end reusable vaporizers can come with temperature controls and even adapters to be able to vaporize marijuana flower as well as oil. \n\nDisposable vape pens are another widely available option. The cartridge and pen are a single unit, and you don’t recharge them when they’re empty. You simply recycle them. \n\nMost folks who are new to vaping cannabis start out with the least expensive option, which is usually a disposable pen. Once folks appreciate the benefits and convenience of vaping, many opt to buy higher-end pens, and there are virtually no limits on the type and design of vape pens available to consumers.\n\n![Hello3-min (2).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_2_33e3662caf.png)\n\n### Extraction Techniques to Make Cannabis Concentrates\n\nTo produce concentrates, manufacturers extract cannabis oils from the leaf material and, depending on what the manufacturer desires as their end product, there are a number of extraction techniques they use to create the oils.\n\n**Distillates** are cannabis oils that have been taken through a vacuum or steam process, usually several times, in order to isolate particular cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol ([THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc)) or cannabidiol ([CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd)). \n\nThe end-product has very little flavor or smell, which allows concentrate manufacturers to modify the original solution so that they can create unique products. Companies sometimes add terpenes and flavors to distillates to enhance both their aroma and effects.\n\n![Hello5-min (2).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_2_da224136ea.png)\n\n### What Else Is in My Cannabis Vape Cartridge? \n\nOnce they extract the oil, [cannabis concentrate manufacturers use a variety of techniques](https://www.cannabisbusinesstimes.com/article/whats-in-your-vape-cartridge/) to create their final product. \n\nFor cartridges, the oil must remain viscous (have a thick and sticky consistency) in order for it to turn into vapor when properly heated and so that the concentrates don’t gum up. This can involve mixing raw cannabis oil with other additives, including:\n\n* Coconut oil\n* Vegetable glycerin\n* Propylene glycol \n\nSome cannabis concentrate connoisseurs avoid carts containing additives, but you’ll have to decide what kind of vape cart is right for you. \n\n![Hello7-min (1).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello7_min_1_dd23f769e3.png)\n\n### How Much Cannabis Oil Is in My Cartridge & How Long Will It Last? \n\nGenerally, prefilled carts come in two sizes: \n\n* 1/2 gram (500 mg)\n* 1 gram (1,000 mg)\n\nUnfortunately, there’s no standard formula for how many puffs your cartridge will contain. But according to a few dispensary employees, it’s comfortable to assume that the average person will reliably yield no less than 75 and probably no more than 150 puffs from a 1/2-gram cartridge. This is based on a 3-to-5-milligram puff, which varies widely from person to person. \n\nThat said, these are just a few of the variables when it comes to how long a vape cart lasts:\n\n* The temperature of the battery\n* How long and how much vapor you inhale\n* Whether you’re using a disposable or rechargeable battery\n\nUsing the 3-to-5 milligram formula, it’s fairly simple to make an educated guess as to how long a cart may last for you. If you’re a light inhaler and you’re using your vape pen throughout the day, taking around 30 puffs, your cartridge will probably last somewhere between three to five days. \n\nA [HelloMD interview with Jeff Nagel, co-founder of W Vapes](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/how-long-does-the-oil-in-a-cartridge-last/) breaks down how his company has determined how long its cartridges lasts. \n\nMeanwhile, just remember: The percentage of THC in a cart doesn’t necessarily translate to the best cartridge for you. Effects from terpenes are often as important as the overall potency of the product is.\n\n![Hello2-min (3).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_3_fdb75a1b29.png)\n\n### How to Get the Most Out of Your Cannabis Vape Cartridge\n\nHere are a few tips to help maximize your cannabis cartridge experience:\n\n* Store your carts vertically, preferably in a cool, dry location. Heat will evaporate the oil in your cartridge.\n* Hold your pen vertically (not horizontally, the way you’d smoke a joint) when vaping.\n* No vapor? Try turning the cartridge upside down so that the oil coats the wick. \n* Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean your pen.\n* Dispensaries or delivery services will almost always replace a leaky cartridge. If your cart is leaking, don’t leave it on the battery as the oil could damage it.\n* For reusable vaporizers, unscrew the cart from the pen when not in use.\n* Use the rubber tips that come with the cart to keep the ends from leaking onto your backpack, purse, clothing or storage container. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But, many people prefer the old-fashioned way - they like to inhale their weed. \n\nThere are a surprising number of ways in which to do so, including:\n\n- smoking your bud from a preroll or \"joint\"\n- inhaling flower from a pipe or bong\n- vaping cannabis oil or even fresh flower\n- dabbing from resin, wax, and shatter\nSmoking your marijuana in a joint, pipe, or bong for many people is the traditional way to consume cannabis, but it is also indiscreet and smelly. Another route to take is by vaping cannabis or dabbing. In this article, we explore these two different methods of consumption.\n\n### What is Dabbing?\n\n[Dabbing](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana) is what many people may consider to be advanced play when it comes to weed consumption. For the most part, dabbing cannabis will pack a real punch - the end result being a very potent psychoactive high. \n\nDabs are more potent than other methods of consumption as they are concentrated extractions of cannabis containing high amounts of THC and other cannabinoids. Dabs are created using solvents like butane or carbon dioxide which when extracted become what's known as wax, butane hash oil (BHO), shatter, and budder.\n\nDabs are consumed by heating the resin within a dab rig and inhaling. While a dab rig is handy, consumers can purchase resin from the local dispensary and heat it on the tip of a nail with a blowtorch. This may seem crude, but it's an inexpensive way to find out if dabbing is right for you. As concentrates have become more popular there are now new products on the market such as electronic nails, or \"enails\", which eliminate the need for a torch.\n\nPeople who dab may do so because they like the intensity of the high or they may need more concentrated amounts of THC to deal with issues such as chronic pain or nausea associated with cancer treatment. If you are new to dabbing and unsure of your weed tolerance, be forewarned that most cannabis extracts test between 60-90% THC which will give you an extremely potent experience. \n\nFor some, this may be overwhelming and result in an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. Lastly, from a medical research standpoint, the long-term effects of dabbing concentrates are unknown. We suggest starting more slowly and that dabbing not be your first experience with cannabis.\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://www.youtube.com/embed/I3vM64Ga7sc\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen></iframe>\n\nHere's a HelloMD \"how-to\" video on using a vape pen to consume your weed.\n\n\n### What is Vaping?\n\nWhy vape instead of smoking your weed? It's a great question and given the popularity of [vaping marijuana](https://hellomd.com/articles/inhaling-cannabis-a-guide-to-smoking-vaping-and-dabbing/) products, a good one to answer. Essentially, vaping cannabis is the act of heating your weed without burning it. Through the heating process, a vapor is released which is then inhaled. As the cannabis is not burnt, like in a bowl or joint, no smoke is created. \n\nWhen it comes to vaporizers, you have a variety of choices. Some vaporizers are compatible with flower, some are compatible with concentrates/oils, and some are compatible with both.\n\nThere are a few benefits of vaping cannabis over smoking. For one, when you vape cannabis, you forego the sometimes pesky skunky smell that can give you away. Vapes pack a lot of flavor but surprisingly little smell, or if there is one it dissipates quickly - so you won't alert the neighborhood of your activities. Overall, vaping is also considered to be safer and less harmful to your lungs than smoking. Lastly, most vaporizers whether they are stationary or handheld, are designed to reduce harmful smoke toxins.\nIn a [2014 study](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24821347/) 100 research candidates were surveyed and most consumers reported that they preferred vaporizing over smoking because of:\n\n- the lack of smell\n- better tasting\n- a similar effect to smoking cannabis\n- easier to inhale \n\nBelow we look at some vaporizer and dab rig options for consuming cannabis.\n\n### Roam Vaporizer - by GPen\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-08-11 at 4.25.28 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_08_11_at_4_25_28_PM_1118bc52e1.png)\n\n\nThe [Roam Vaporizer](https://www.gpen.com/products/g-pen-roam-vaporizer?clickid=VkzS87SMoxyLTbvyo0WQI33oUkBRJO3RRSbKRU0&utm_medium=Skimbit%20Ltd.&utm_campaign=bva-affiliate&utm_source=Affiliates) is great for dabbing on the go and is even better as it's a dab rig not made of glass. These days, we’ve added a few other inhalable options including, desktop vaporizers, portable vape pens and for those consumers looking for something with an extra kick—dabbing. \n\nInhalables are still popular choice among cannabis consumers. Once you take cannabis smoke or vapor in through your lungs, it’s able to enter directly into your bloodstream, leading to almost immediate effects that can last up to three hours. Cannabis’s bioavailability, or the amount of cannabinoids that are available for the body to use, via the inhalable method is also high: around 56%. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link)\n\nWhen consuming cannabis via inhalables, you start with cannabis flower or a cannabis extract that’s been made from flower via various extraction methods. We’ve put together a reference guide that you can use when deciding which type of inhalation method is best for your needs. \n\n### Smoking Cannabis via Joints & Pipes\n\nSmoking cannabis via a joint or pipe is a classic way to consume cannabis. \n\n#### What Are Joints & Pipes?\n\nA joint is basically a marijuana cigarette. Cannabis is finely grounded and then rolled into a thin piece of paper. The joint is then lit on one end, and cannabis smoke is inhaled through the other end.\n\nMeanwhile, pipes consist of a bowl where ground cannabis is burned. This bowl is connected to a neck that smoke travels through to reach the consumer. \n\n#### Why Do People Like to Smoke Cannabis via Joints & Pipes?\n\nJoints and pipes are a simple and cheap way to consume cannabis, because they don’t require lots of other equipment. For some folks, this method affects them differently than other methods do, and thus it’s their preferred way to medicate. \n\n#### What Are Some Downsides to Joints & Pipes?\n\nIn terms of downsides, the smoke that’s produced and consumed via joints or pipes can irritate the lungs and trigger allergies. Smoke from cannabis also contains carcinogens, though the jury’s still out on whether this smoke actually leads to higher incidences of lung cancer. \n\nIf you have a sensitive respiratory system and can consume cannabis in another fashion, most cannabis experts would likely advise that you avoid consuming cannabis with a joint or pipe. But if you’re one of the many who enjoys the process of [rolling a joint](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srsJ5-RdkuU) or packing a bowl, there’s no shame in partaking in this method. \n\n### Smoking Cannabis via Bubblers & Bongs \n\nAnother tried-and-true method of smoking cannabis is via water pipes like bubblers and bongs. \n\n#### What are Bubblers & Bongs?\n\nBubblers are shaped similarly to pipes except they contain a small chamber that holds water. Bongs on the other hand are often shaped more-or-less like a vase, with water sitting at the bottom. \n\n#### Why Do People Like to Smoke Cannabis via Bubblers & Bongs?\n\nThese pieces filter smoke through the chamber that’s filled with water, which then helps remove some tar and ash from the smoke. These pieces also cool the smoke before it hits your lungs, resulting in a smoother draw. \n\n#### What Are Some Downsides to Bubblers & Bongs?\n\nThere’s some controversy about what substances in cannabis smoke a bong or bubbler can filter out. A study in the 1990s found that [bongs filter more cannabinoids out of the water than they do tar and other particulates](https://www.ukcia.org/research/pipes.php), meaning that with a bong or bubbler, it’s possible that you’d need more cannabis to achieve a certain high than you would with another method of inhalation. \n\nOthers disagree with these findings, because like most studies involving cannabis, there were flaws, and the study hasn’t been replicated since. Furthermore, some folks say that since water isn’t good at dissolving cannabinoids, the amount that would get filtered through the water should be negligible. \n\nIf you want to smoke cannabis, but find that the smoke sometimes irritates your lungs, investing in a bong or bubbler could be the way to go. \n\n### Vaping Cannabis via Portable Vape Pens\n\nPortable vape pens are an increasingly popular way to consume cannabis concentrates and flower. \n\n#### What Are Portable Vape Pens?\n\nPortable vape pens rely on heating up cannabis flower or concentrate to the point where they turn into vapor, but stop short of combusting and creating smoke. Most vape pens that you see today consist of a battery and a cartridge that’s prefilled with cannabis oil. There are also portable dry flower vape pens that require you to load a chamber with flower for consumption. \n\n#### Why Do People Like to Consume Cannabis via Portable Vape Pens?\n\nBecause you’re inhaling vapor instead of smoke, it’s thought that vaping is better for you overall than smoking is. However, because vaping is relatively new, we don’t have any studies that can solidly back up this belief. What we do know is that [vaping may help reduce smoke-related symptoms such as coughing and phlegm](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/add.13075). \n\nBoth dry flower and concentrate vape pens are popular among consumers, because they’re portable, easy of use and discreet. Disposable vape pens and prefilled vape cartridges that attach to batteries are especially convenient and require very little effort from the consumer.\n\n#### What Are Some Downsides to Portable Vape Pens?\n\nThe technology for vape pens is still developing, so oftentimes batteries will die, and cartridges can leak or get clogged. Devices for vaping concentrate often don’t have temperature control settings, which for some consumers can be a negative.\n\nThere have also been incidences in California of some prefilled vape cartridges testing positive for low levels of lead, though actions to remedy this are underway. Additionally, sometimes companies put additives in their vape pens to achieve a desired consistency. However, the impact these additives have on our respiratory systems is still largely unknown. \n\nIf you’re environmentally conscious, think carefully about whether vaping is a good fit for you. Some companies have recycling programs for disposable vape pens. But as of right now we don’t have a good way to recycle prefilled vape cartridges, so they often end up in the trash. \n\n### Vaping Cannabis via Desktop Vaporizers\n\nDesktop vaporizers are usually favored by those who medicate with large amounts of cannabis at home. \n\n#### What Are Desktop Vaporizers?\n\nLike vape pens, desktop vaporizers heat up cannabis flower or concentrate at a low temperature, so that vapor instead of smoke is produced. These vaporizers have much more powerful machinery than that of a portable vape pen, so they need to be plugged in to a power source.\n\n#### Why Do People Like to Consume Cannabis via a Desktop Vaporizer?\n\nDesktop vaporizers are known to produce a potent, dense and flavorful vapor, along with having temperature controls that consumers can adjust to their liking. Desktop vapes also tend to heat cannabis more efficiently, meaning in the long run they could save you money. \n\n#### What Are Some Downsides to Desktop Vapes?\n\nThe obvious con of a desktop vaporizer is its size: These devices must be plugged in. And they can be heavy and often have multiple pieces that are needed for a session. Desktop vaporizers often need a few minutes to heat up, so they’re not a good fit for someone looking for a quick and easy way to consume cannabis. \n\n### Dabbing Cannabis \n\nDabbing is best suited to experienced consumers who are looking to take in large doses of cannabinoids. \n \n#### What Is Dabbing?\n\nDabbing is done using a dab rig, which looks a lot like a bong. But instead of placing flower in a glass bowl, dab rigs have “nails” that are made out of metal or quartz. This nail is heated and a dab of concentrate is placed onto the nail. If the temperature setting on the dab rig is low, vapor is created, and if it’s high enough, that vapor will instead become smoke. \n\n#### Why Do People Like to Dab Cannabis?\n\nDabbing delivers a potent dose of cannabinoids to the system. This is great for medical marijuana patients who need high doses of cannabis. Dabbing is an option that’s quicker and more efficient in terms of getting a higher dose without having to inhale as much of the nonmedicinal elements of the plant.\n\n#### What Are Some Downsides to Dabbing Cannabis?\n\nBesides being too potent for many consumers, dabbing can often expose consumers to butane. To heat the nail, some dabbers use a mini blowtorch, which can occasionally leak butane on top of being a fire hazard. Nails are also often made of low-quality materials that can give off toxins when heated. \n\nAdditionally, concentrates often used in dabbing are made using butane as a solvent. Butane not only poses health risks to humans when inhaled, but can also lead to explosions during the manufacturing process. \n\nFortunately, it’s easy to avoid butane in the dabbing process by heating nails electronically and choosing concentrates that don’t contain butane. \n\nPhoto credit: Frau Cosmic/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But even with this growth, vape technology is still lacking. Cartridge leaks, dead batteries and other product malfunctions are still the norm—but this may soon become a thing of the past.\n\nEnter jiu-jitsu fighter and cannabis entrepreneur Seibo Shen. A former stuntman, Seibo turned to medical cannabis as a way to manage pain from injuries he sustained both at work and as an athlete. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### Seibo’s Search for a Superior Vaporizer Led to the Development of VapeXhale\n\nAlways health conscious, Seibo wasn’t interested in smoking cannabis, so he turned to vaporization. He bought his first vape in 1997 and in subsequent years went on to purchase about 75 other devices. Unable to find one that worked well for him, he decided to make his own: the desktop vaporizer that’s now known as the VapeXhale. \n\nThe VapeXhale has won numerous awards and garnered praise from cannabis connoisseurs for its powerful production engine that vaporizes marijuana quickly and efficiently while preserving its flavor. \n\n### Seibo’s Latest Creation—the Hanu Stone Vaporizer—Is Big on Form as Well as Function \n\nNow, Seibo is using the knowledge he acquired while building one of the best desktop vaporizers in the cannabis world and applying it to the portable vaporizer market with his newest creation: the Hanu Stone. \n\nSeibo didn’t want his device to be shaped like your typical vape pen. Modeled after a rock found on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, the Hanu Stone was designed to feel good in the palm of your hand. Seibo likens it to “an adult fidget spinner.” \n\n“When a person picks [the Hanu Stone] up, it evokes some sort of response or emotion,” he says.\n\nBut the Hanu Stone isn’t just about good looks; it also boasts a 500-milli amp battery—that’s about twice the size of the standard vape battery that you’d find on the market today.\n\nThe device also has a voltage regulator and integrated circuit. Ever notice how the quality of your vapor deteriorates as the battery in your pen runs out? This won’t happen with the Hanu Stone. \n\nWhen the battery in the device drops below 50%, logic built into the pod pushes out more cannabis oil to make up for the drop in power. The result is a consistent user experience: You get the same amount of hits, and the quality of these hits doesn’t diminish with use. \n\n### Additional Bells & Whistles of the Hanu Stone Cannabis Vaporizer\n\nMeanwhile, the Hanu Stone uses a ceramic wick in lieu of heavy metals, making it a safer and healthier alternative on the market.\n\nSeibo has also designed and calibrated his pods to reduce leakage—even at high altitudes. And he’s made the vaporizer easy to share with others—without compromising your health. The Hanu Stone boasts two mouthpieces: one for your friends and another for your own personal use. \n\nSo, where can you get one? But you’ve probably noticed that nibbling on a cannabis-infused cookie can take much longer to kick in. \n\nThe [effectiveness of cannabis can vary greatly depending on how it’s consumed](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16237477). So, getting the right amount of marijuana for the effect you’re looking for can be tricky. Differences in the way cannabis is consumed can make a big difference in its bioavailability—in other words, how quickly and completely cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) become available to the body for their desired effects.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Bioavailability Is the Key to Cannabis Benefits\n\nThe term bioavailability was coined in the pharmaceutical industry to describe the rate and speed at which a given drug is taken up by the body and has its desired effects. \n\nSince then, people use it in connection with consumed substances, even foods. But a given substance doesn’t automatically have its full effect on the body once it’s consumed. Many factors can affect how long it takes for the substance to kick in. And whether that effect is weaker or stronger than it should be—or just right.\n\nVarious factors can affect the bioavailability of a substance, including cannabis, such as a person’s:\n\n* Age\n* Weight\n* Overall health \n\nThen there are circumstantial factors, such as whether:\n\n* The substance is taken with or without food\n* It’s consumed early or late in the day\n* The person is also taking compatible or incompatible foods and drugs\n\nOne of the most important factors affecting a substance’s bioavailability though, is the way it’s consumed. And this is an extra important consideration when you’re taking cannabis, since there are so many different consumption methods.\n\nSmoking may be the most familiar way to consume cannabis, but other consumption methods include:\n\n* [Vaping](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1f473a100a820006562eb3/the-ins-and-outs-of-vaping-medical-marijuana)\n* [Dabbing](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a4fd8fc100a820006562f52/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana)\n* [Eating](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a567e8fc7e0180007a7826c/consuming-cannabis-edibles-to-improve-your-health)\n* [Consuming marijuana sublingually](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a6682498425e40008273a36/getting-the-most-out-of-using-sublingual-cannabis)\n* [Applying a transdermal patch to your skin](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ad50ee7049b4f000a64e872/cannabis-transdermal-patches-medicate-through-your-skin)\n\nEach of these methods brings essential cannabinoids such as THC and CBD into the bloodstream and eventually to the brain. But they take different routes to get there, and this can affect how much THC or CBD becomes available for use—and how quickly the effects can be felt. \n\n### Variations in Bioavailability Can Make Accurate Cannabis Dosing Difficult\n\nBecause so many factors can affect the bioavailability of cannabinoids, it can be hard to get the right amount for your purposes. For example, [it’s important to consume some kind of fat, such as butter or coconut oil](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b4fbaf58904b90007731b33/why-you-need-to-eat-fat-with-your-cannabis), with cannabis edibles, because cannabis is fat soluble. This means fat molecules can better transport cannabinoids into the bloodstream. \n\nWithout fat, the body isn’t able to fully take up the cannabis, so the plant’s effects could be much weaker than if it had been eaten with a bit of fat or oil. And if a person who usually vapes cannabis for a medical condition switches to edibles, they may be frustrated by the lag time in feeling its effects and be tempted to take more.\n\nGiven the many different cannabis strains and their varying potency, and the multitude of other variables in each person’s life, it can be difficult to calculate the right dose of cannabis for a particular health condition. \n\nIn general, however, knowing a little about how cannabis is processed and used by the body can help you decide what form—and what amount—can work best for you. \n\nHere’s a rundown of the many methods of using cannabis and what’s known about the bioavailability of each.\n\n### Smoking & Vaping Marijuana Bring Cannabinoids Directly Into the Lungs & Then the Bloodstream\n\nSmoking and vaping cannabis are among the fastest ways to feel the effects of THC and CBD. This is because inhaling cannabis brings cannabinoid molecules directly into the small capillaries in the lungs, and from there directly into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, they can travel directly to the brain and other parts of the body that contain cannabinoid receptors for an effect that can be felt within minutes.\n\nThe kind of cannabis strain or the way it’s delivered can also influence the effects of inhaled cannabis. Smoking involves combustion—burning the leaves and buds of the cannabis plant itself. But although vaping and dabbing avoid the toxins produced by combustion, they involve more concentrated forms of cannabis such as oils and dabs.\n\nIn general, inhaled cannabis has a typical bioavailability of up to 56%. What this means is that 56% of the active ingredients become available to the body.\n\n### Cannabinoids From Marijuana Edibles Don’t Make it to the Bloodstream\n\nCannabis edibles are more popular than ever, and new infused foods are appearing on the market all the time. But while getting your cannabis with candies or cookies can be tasty and fun, this can be among the least effective ways to absorb a significant amount of cannabinoids.\n\nThat’s because of a phenomenon called the first-pass metabolism. Before cannabinoids can get into the bloodstream, they must take a “first pass” through the digestive system, which strips out many of the available cannabinoids and accounts for the lag time in feeling their effects. \n\nLike many other substances, the liver processes cannabinoids, where [a select set of enzymes converts them to a usable form](https://www.projectcbd.org/science/cannabis-pharmacology/cbd-drug-interactions-role-cytochrome-p450). From there, fat molecules can help transport the cannabinoids into the bloodstream and on to the brain and other tissues.\n\nBut a large percentage of the cannabis in an edible is destroyed in the journey, or simply excreted. This makes the average bioavailability of marijuana edibles hover between 4–12%. \n\nRELATED: [COOKING WITH CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56f9cbe5eb647f000800007f/cooking-with-cannabis)\n\n### Marijuana Sublinguals, Lozenges & Drinks Take Effect Quickly via the Mouth’s Mucous Membranes\n\nAlthough sublingual drops and tinctures, lozenges and cannabis-infused drinks could technically be considered edibles, these forms of cannabis are somewhat different. They take a very different—and much faster—route for delivering cannabinoids to the bloodstream: the mucous membranes of the mouth.\n\nBecause areas such as the base of the tongue, the cheek and the roof of the mouth are highly permeable, cannabis products that come directly in contact with them don’t have to pass through the digestive system and liver in order to become bioavailable. \n\nThe most permeable area of the mouth is under the tongue, which is why sublingual cannabis preparations are among the fastest and most effective ways to get a consistent dose of cannabinoids. After that, lozenges held against the cheek or roof of the mouth can also deliver cannabis quickly and consistently. \n\nOverall, oral cannabis preparations have a typical bioavailability of 50–75%.\n\n### Cannabis Transdermal Patches Provide Long-Lasting Relief\n\nTransdermal patches can deliver consistent therapeutic doses of cannabinoids while avoiding the first pass slowdown of the digestive system. Though there isn’t much research on the bioavailability of transdermals, patches can deliver a consistent dose of cannabinoids for long periods of time, usually between eight and 12 hours.\n\nUnlike many other kinds of medications, cannabis comes in a variety of forms, each with its own way of providing its effects. Knowing how cannabinoids like THC and CBD work with your body’s processes can help you find the cannabis consumption method that works best for you.\n\nPhoto credit: [Grav](https://unsplash.com/@grav)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b8882d88dd0720008373fcf/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-to-about-marijuana) index of articles. Good thinking. Vaping cannabis is generally better for your health than smoking it is. And that’s because of one thing: combustion.\n\nWhen you smoke cannabis, you’re applying heat in the form of a direct flame to flower or concentrate. This heat turns the tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) in raw cannabis into tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This process, known as decarboxylation, is needed for cannabis flower or concentrate to produce the psychoactive effects cannabis is known for. However, the high heat of combustion may also release compounds that pose a risk to your health. \n\nBecause of this, health-conscious cannabis consumers have turned to vaporization, which uses a lower heat to decarboxylate cannabis, creating a vapor—instead of smoke—that you then inhale. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIn today’s cannabis world, there are more vaping options than ever. How do you know what to choose? Don’t worry. We’re here to help. We’ll go over conduction and convection; two different heating methods that you should consider. And we’ll brief you on different heating elements, so you’ll be off to a good start in your search for the perfect vaporizer. \n\n### What’s a Conduction Vaporizer? \n\nVaporizers heat cannabis in two different ways: conduction and convection. In conduction vaporizers, cannabis is heated via direct contact with a hot surface, but the surface never gets hot enough to combust the cannabis—hopefully. \n\nMost portable vape pens are conduction vaporizers. This is because they don’t take long to heat up, have a simple design that makes them easy to maintain and can be made at an affordable price point. \n\n#### The Pros of Conduction Vaporizers\n \n* Heat up faster\n* Less maintenance\n* Good price point\n\n#### The Cons of Conduction Vaporizers \n\n* Uneven heating\n* Little temperature control \n* Harsher vapor \n\nThe downside to conduction vaporizers is that many of them don’t heat cannabis evenly. Typically, the heating element only touches one part of the cannabis, meaning you sometimes have to shake or stir the material, so it can come into contact with the heat source. \n\nAdditionally, these devices usually lack temperature controls. Without these controls, you run the risk of the vaporizer getting too hot, leading to some combustion and a harsher vapor that can be harder on your lungs.\n\nVape pens often contain additives like propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol. These thinning agents are safe for consumption at lower temperatures, but at higher heat (around 446 degrees F), they can [transform into carcinogenic chemicals like formaldehyde](https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/acm.2016.0337). While there’s still debate on how applicable these studies are to real life, you may want to play it safe and have a vaporizer that lets you keep temperatures at lower levels. \n\nThere are conduction vaporizers with temperature controls like the PAX Era and PAX 3. These vape pens boast temperature control settings that you can operate via your smartphone, and they have a lock feature that prevents them from being operated by any unwanted consumers.\n\n### What’s a Convection Vaporizer? \n\nWhile conduction vaporizers decarboxylate cannabis via contact with a direct heat source, convection vaporizers heat up the air around your cannabis. Convection vaporizers were developed in response to many of the challenges brought up by conduction vaporizers. \n\n#### The Pros of Convection Vaporizers\n \n* Even heating \n* Precise temperature control \n* Cleaner vapor\n\n#### The Cons of Convection Vaporizers\n \n* Longer heat up time\n* Expensive\n\nConvection vaporizers require a lot of energy to heat up, so you’ll usually find them in a pricey desktop vaporizer, though there are some portable options. However, you’ll get the benefits of advanced temperature settings, allowing you to consume your cannabis more safely, efficiently and effectively. \n\n### Vaporizer Heating Elements: Metal, Ceramic & Glass\n\nBeyond the heating mechanism, you may also want to consider what material the heating element is made out of. In a conduction or convection vaporizer, the heating element is what causes either the heating surface or air to get hot. Heating elements are typically made out of: \n\n* Metal \n* Ceramic \n* Glass\n\nThere are pros and cons to each type of material. \n\nAluminum and titanium are popular choices for metal heating elements. Both metals conduct heat well and respond easily to temperature changes, making vaporizers with these devices able to control temperatures to a T.\n\nSome folks are wary of metal heating elements, because it’s thought that at high temperature metals can give off substances that can be harmful to your health. However, these claims have no solid scientific basis. In fact, for aluminum to be hot enough to emit any substances, it needs to reach 1220 degrees F—most vaporizers tend to heat around the 400 degree F range. \n\n#### The Pros of Using Metal\n \n* Precise temperature control \n\n#### The Cons of Using Metal\n \n* Tends to be pricier\n* May alter taste of cannabis \n\n### Vaporizer Heating Elements: Ceramic \n\nCeramic is another popular choice for heating elements due to its low cost and ability to withstand higher temperatures than metal. However, ceramic isn’t as good of a conductor as metal is, making temperature harder to control.\n\nSince ceramic vaporizers can be made at a low cost, you should do a bit of research before buying one to make sure you don’t end up with a low-quality product. There are many high-quality ceramic vaporizers on the market like the VapeXhale. \n\n#### The Pros of Using Ceramic\n\n* Doesn’t alter taste\n* Can achieve hotter temperatures than glass or metal\n\n#### The Cons of Using Ceramic\n\n* Temperature can be hard to control\n* Need to watch out for low-quality products\n\n### Vaporizer Heating Elements: Glass\n\nGlass is pricier than metal and ceramic are, but it’s not necessarily better, so it’s the least popular of the three. However, it’s increasingly popular among dabbers. Glass has many of the same qualities as ceramic does, but it’s more fragile. \n\n#### The Pros of Using Glass\n\n* Good flavor\n* Can withstand hotter temperatures than metal can\n\n#### The Cons of Using Glass\n\n* Temperature can be hard to control\n* Fragile \n\nAll in all, choosing the right vaporizer is a matter of personal preference. Typically, you get what you pay for, and the priciest vaporizers have the best heating elements. You’ve probably seen cartridges prefilled with cannabis oil, like those sold by [Bloom Farms](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/57730c61e878f80007000026/bloom-farms) and [Jetty Extracts](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5890ded5519db3000cf0f665/jetty-extracts), which require a separate battery to function.\n\nYou may have also seen a new type of vaporizer pen popping up in the last year or so: the disposable vape pen. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What’s the Difference Between a Prefilled Cartridge & a Disposable Vape Pen? \n\nIf you want to use a cartridge that’s been prefilled with cannabis oil, you also need to buy a battery. The battery provides power for the atomizer, or heating element, in the cartridge. This atomizer is what turns the cannabis oil into vapor form. To activate these atomizers, you either push a button or simply inhale. \n\n#### Pros of cartridge pens:\n\n* Batteries are reusable.\n* Some cartridges can be refilled and reused, though most are disposable.\n* Most cartridges follow the industry standard of 510 threading—this means you can use the same battery for different cartridges.\n* There are more cannabis oil options than disposable vape pens available. \n\n#### Cons of cartridge pens:\n\n* Battery requires recharging after a certain amount of use.\n* The battery and cartridge should be cleaned periodically.\n\nRELATED: [THE INS & OUTS OF VAPING MEDICAL MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1f473a100a820006562eb3/the-ins-and-outs-of-vaping-medical-marijuana)\n\nUnlike cartridge pens, disposable vape pens are one unit: The oil, atomizer, battery and other components are all contained within the pen. To trigger the heating element, simply inhale. \n\nBecause these pens are easy to use and can be thrown away once the oil is gone, they’re popular among cannabis newbies, canna-tourists and those who aren’t ready to purchase more expensive vaping options. \n\n#### Pros of disposable vape pens:\n \n* Battery doesn’t require charging.\n* No cleaning or other maintenance is necessary.\n* They tend to be better priced than prefilled cartridges.\n\n#### Cons of disposable vape pens: \n\n* Battery isn’t reusable, and the entire pen must be thrown away; this creates more waste, though some disposable vape pen brands have recycling programs. So, customers can bring back used pens to the dispensary where they purchased it from.\n\n### Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping for a Disposable Vape Pen \n\n1. **Look on the box or ask a cannabis consultant how many doses are in a single pen.** Depending on the pen, you can get anywhere from 50 to 200 doses. Decide how often you’ll be using the pen, and how many doses you think are appropriate for your needs. If you’re shopping on a budget, divide the price by the number of doses to see which pens will give you the best deal. \n\n2. **See if the company has a recycling program.** If you’re interested in trying a disposable vape pen but are worried about creating waste, some companies allow consumers to return their used vape pen to the dispensary where they bought it from. Companies may even give you credit towards your next purchase to encourage consumers to participate in their recycling program. \n\n3. **Ask about the cannabis oil in the pen.** This includes extraction methods and whether there are any additives in the cannabis oil. Vaping can be a much healthier option than smoking is—that is, if you know [how to vape marijuana safely](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b0326f6bf4c4d000a0e7389/how-to-vape-marijuana-safely). \n\n### Top 3 Disposable Vape Pen Brands\n\nThere’s a lot to choose from if you’re shopping around for a disposable vape pen. Many anti-drug campaigns and mainstream medical experts say that it can, adding that warning to the long list of reasons why cannabis is a dangerous drug capable of destroying lives. But marijuana consumers and advocates say that those claims are either overblown or downright false. Who’s right? \n\nThe cannabis plant contains more than 400 individual compounds. Most of these haven’t been separately studied, but so far [none have been shown to be intrinsically carcinogenic](http://scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2012/07/25/cannabis-cannabinoids-and-cancer-the-evidence-so-far/). However, the best-known cannabis compounds, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), appear to have both anti-carcinogenic and tumor-promoting properties. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nNumerous studies on the health benefits of cannabis reveal that CBD can have an inhibiting effect on cancer cells, particularly in the lungs, breast, prostate and brain, while high doses of THC can trigger cancerous cell changes in some tissues. But the controversy over whether cannabis can cause cancer really relates not to the plant in its natural state, but to the ways people consume it: by smoking, eating or inhaling its vapors.\n\n### Is Smoking Marijuana Riskier Than Smoking Tobacco?\n\nThough edibles and other ways of using cannabis are grabbing ever bigger shares of the growing medical cannabis market, many people still consume it the old-fashioned way: by smoking. For that reason, much of the research and discussion around the issue of cannabis and cancer risk are concerned with smoking the plant, and how that compares to smoking cigarettes containing nicotine and tar. Recent research suggests that aside from the fact that both can be lit, burned and inhaled, marijuana and tobacco really aren’t equivalent.\n\nWhen materials of any kind are burned, combustion causes the release of toxins that can be inhaled along with the smoke. Some of these, such as benzene, are carcinogens that can damage various organs, especially the lungs. That’s true for both tobacco cigarettes and for cannabis joints, so simply [smoking cannabis can expose someone to the carcinogens that come with combustion](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56cba036cecb1b0008000088/marijuana-and-your-lungs-should-you-be-worried), just like smoking cigarettes would do. The question is: How much is that exposure?\n\n### Can We Trust the Studies?\n\nA few years ago, the British Lung Foundation claimed that [smoking marijuana is up to 20 times more likely to cause lung cancer than tobacco](https://www.drugfoundation.org.nz/matters-of-substance/august-2012/cannabis-20-times-more-carcinogenic-than-tobacco/). The DEA, in a piece warning of the harmful effects of marijuana, also reported that [when burned, cannabis releases up to 70% more carcinogenic gases than tobacco](https://www.dea.gov/pubs/pressrel/pr042605.html?_ga=2.57028714.1178403058.1508089606-1310698703.1507934028), and that the risk of exposure to these toxins is greater when smoking marijuana because smokers typically inhale more deeply and hold the smoke in their lungs longer. \n\nBut a number of studies, including one recently published in the _Harm Reduction Journal_, \npoint out that [statistics like these are misleading at best](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1277837/). Cannabis and nicotine behave differently in the body, so the cancer risk from exposure to equivalent levels of carcinogens rises in the presence of nicotine, but falls in the presence of cannabinoids.\n\n### How Our Bodies React to Nicotine & Cannabis\n\nThe human body has many natural receptors for nicotine. These receptors can have some protective functions such as preventing damage to brain cells from beta amyloid plaque that causes Alzheimer’s disease. But many nicotine receptors exist in the epithelial cells that line the respiratory system, and that makes these cells especially vulnerable to damage from toxins created by burning tobacco.\n\nThe body also has an extensive network of naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors, which are found in many organs and tissues—but not in the respiratory epithelial cells. This, researchers say, probably explains why tobacco smoke can be demonstrably linked to cancers, but not cannabis. What’s more, cannabinoids can support processes that lead to the death of cancer cells. \n\nSo yes, there’s an overall risk that comes from inhaling hot gases and particulates, but smoking cannabis may present less of a cancer risk than smoking tobacco, while getting the many health benefits of cannabinoids. \n\nRELATED: [IS MARIJUANA RIGHT FOR YOU?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/is-marijuana-right-for-you)\n\n\n### Is Vaping Safer Than Smoking Marijuana?\n\nVaping has been hailed as a safer way to “smoke” without the toxins that come from burning cannabis, and in general it can be—but that depends on the method of delivery. Some cannabis oils contain ingredients that also can release toxins and irritate the respiratory system when inhaled, and vaping at very high temperatures can also cause the release of harmful toxins.\n\n### What About Edibles?\n\nThe legalization of marijuana in many U.S. states and around the world has opened the door to [new ways of consuming cannabis that don’t involve smoking](https://www.livescience.com/24714-marijuana-edibles-colorado-washington.html), from artful edibles blended with chocolate and raspberry to candy bars, sodas and teas. But the cannabis plant itself contains no documented carcinogens, so the risk of cancer from eating cannabis is negligible, although other ingredients added to edibles could carry their own cancer risks.\n\n### Dabbing: Unsafe at High Temperatures\n\nAnother new way to consume cannabis is dabbing—heating highly concentrated pieces or dabs of extracted cannabis oil on a “nail,” a metal or glass compartment capable of reaching very high temperatures, and inhaling the vapors. Of all the ways people consume cannabis, dabbing can pose the [highest risk of exposure to carcinogens](https://www.forbes.com/sites/janetwburns/2017/09/27/dabbing-cannabis-oil-may-expose-you-to-cancer-causing-toxins/#10ea91606651) if not done with caution.\n\nThe form of cannabis typically used in dabbing is butane hash oil, or BHO, a potent cannabis concentrate created by extracting cannabis oil using the highly flammable (and toxic) N-Butane. When placed on the nail of a dab rig and heated, the oil releases a potent vapor high in THC. Temperatures on a nail can exceed 900 F—and it’s that intense heat that exposes consumers \nto [high concentrations of chemicals](http://www.oregonlive.com/marijuana/index.ssf/2017/09/butane_hash_oil_releases_carci.html) that include the known carcinogens benzene and methacrylein.\n\nHeating dabs at lower temperatures (at or below 700F, say consumers) lowers risk considerably, but many dabbing rigs don’t have the temperature controls that make it possible to monitor heating levels. \n\nCannabis is a plant rich in compounds with the potential to affect processes in the human body, including the development of cancer, and scientists are still working to understand how those compounds limit or promote the growth of cancer cells. As a result, they forever turn their backs on vaping cannabis. I don’t blame them—everyone wants a great experience.\r\n\r\nHere are some reasons that may lead to disappointment:\r\n\r\n* Your vaporizer doesn’t match your vaping style.\r\n* You expect exactly the same effects as when you smoke flower.\r\n* You don’t know how to use your vaporizer properly.\r\n\r\nThe first two issues can easily be avoided by doing proper research and managing your expectations. However, the last issue of not knowing how to use your vaporizer properly may require some willingness, practice and experimentation on your end to be resolved.\r\n \r\nThere’s a lot of conflicting information on how to vaporize marijuana. In this post I’ll teach you how to use a dry flower vaporizer properly. Learning to use a vaporizer correctly is easier than you might think. With some practice and experimentation, you’ll be getting those clouds of vapor that you deserve.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### Tip 1: Set Your Vaporizer to an Appropriate Temperature\r\n\r\nDifferent temperatures serve different vaping needs. Generally speaking, the higher you set your temperature dial, the closer you will come to a smoke-like experience and the stronger the effects of your vapor will be. But here’s the kicker: With 90% of vaporizers, the higher you set your temperature the more flavor will deteriorate. \r\n\r\nIf you’ve ever vaped marijuana you might know the burnt popcorn taste. This taste gets more prevalent the higher in temperature you go. Your vapor will also be harsher at higher temperatures. But what exactly is a high and low temperature?\r\n\r\nHere’s a general guideline to temperature for vaping:\r\n\r\n**Low-level vaping temperatures**\r\n\r\n320°F(160°C) – 356°F(180°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Light mental medication\r\n* Very weak bodily effects\r\n* Best for flavor\r\n\r\n**Mid-level vaping temperatures** \r\n\r\n356°F(180°C) – 392°F(200°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Moderate to strong mental and physical medication\r\n* Mental and bodily effects both equally apparent\r\n* Good for flavor\r\n\r\n**High-level vaping temperatures** \r\n\r\n392°F(200°C) – 446°F(230°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Intense mental and physical medication\r\n* Bodily effects will be very strong\r\n* Harsh flavor\r\n\r\nIf you’re not feeling the effects of your marijuana, check your temperature and turn the dial up a bit to experiment. \r\n\r\n### Tip 2: Conduction & Convection Vaporizers Require Different Grinds\r\n\r\nNot every dry herb vaporizer needs the same grind. In fact, some vaporizers don’t need a grind at all. They can just take whole nug of flower. To know how to grind the herb for your particular vaporizer, you need to know whether you have a conduction vaporizer or a convection vaporizer.\r\n\r\nIn a conduction vaporizer, heat gets directly transferred between your herb's particles, so \r\nyou need to grind your marijuana as fine as you can. To transfer heat properly in a conduction-heating system, your herb needs to be compact and compactness can be easily achieved with a fine grind.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, since your herb is in direct contact with the heated wands of the heating chamber, you want as many herb particles as possible in contact with it. The finer your grind, the more particles you will be exposing to the heated wands of the heating chamber. To grind your herb fine to a level like this, you need a proper marijuana grinder. \r\n\r\nIn convection vaporizers, marijuana gets heated by circulating hot air. As a result, you will want to maximize airflow in your herb chamber, thus a finger-type grind is what you should aim for. \r\n\r\nGrinding your flower allows you to increase the surface area of exposure, so hot air will heat it more thoroughly. If you’re vaping large amounts, it can be annoying to break up a gram of marijuana with your fingers. Luckily, there are herb grinders which provide you with a fluffy finger-type of grind which is perfect for convection vaporizers.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [BEGINNER'S GUIDE: FINDING THE RIGHT MARIJUANA VAPORIZER](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57fbcaf1644283000784a652/beginner-s-guide-finding-the-right-marijuana-vaporizer)\r\n\r\n### Tip 3: Conduction & Convection Vaporizers Require Different Herb Packing\r\n\r\nPacking your vaporizer properly is essential for producing those huge clouds of vapor. How you pack your vaporizer is dependent on whether you have a conduction or convection vaporizer.\r\n\r\nIf you have a conduction vaporizer, pack your vaporizer tightly and compactly, but not so compact that there’s no airflow. The optimal packing level is also different per vaporizer, so ultimately you’ll have to experiment yourself. \r\n\r\nIf you have a convection vaporizer, pack your vaporizer loosely as it's extremely important to have a proper airflow with convection vaporizers. With convection vaporizers, never fill more than 80%-90% and never compress.\r\n\r\nThere are quite a lot of hybrid vaporizers which get advertised as full or just convection vaporizers, when in fact they’re hybrid vaporizers. If you have a hybrid vaporizer, it’s best to pack your vaporizer somewhere between compact and loose. \r\n\r\nLastly, put as much herb in your herb chamber, so that the bottom part of the chamber is covered with the flower. How much differs per vaporizer, but it’s a simple and effective visual check.\r\n\r\n### Tip 4: Draw Correctly From Your Vaporizer \r\n\r\nWhile this is dependent on the particular vaporizer and inhalation method (direct draw, whip or balloon), there are three general tips with regards to drawing:\r\n\r\n1. Most vaporizers work better if you “sip” them instead of “rip” them. This means that you draw in a controlled way, like you would sip tea.\r\n\r\n2. Draw for at least 10 seconds.\r\n\r\n3. If you’re new to vaping, realize that sometimes you may not physically feel the vapor, though you will feel its effects. \r\n\r\n### Tip 5: Keep Your Vaporizer Clean\r\n\r\nThis might seem like an obvious tip, but even I catch myself being lazy with this, then blame my vaporizer for a foul taste or wispy clouds. Sometimes I open my vaporizer and see the screens are clogged with herb residue—the likely cause of my bad experience.\r\n \r\nIt’s extremely important to keep your herb chamber, vapor path and especially the screens in the vapor path clear of herb residue. Most vaporizers can easily be cleansed with ISO alcohol or Q-Tips dipped in ISO alcohol. Cigarette smokers are often advised to abstain from smoking when their children are present so as not to expose them to carcinogens in the smoke. But when it comes to cannabis, many people are left wondering if there are similar negative effects with secondhand smoke from marijuana.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Is Secondhand Smoke from Marijuana Dangerous?\n\nOne of the first studies on the issue of secondhand marijuana smoke was published in the _Pediatric Resource Journal_ in December 2016. The study looked at children, ranging in age from one month to two years old, and how they reacted to secondhand smoke from cannabis and tobacco in their households.\n\nResearchers found that the children didn’t have any cannabidiol (CBD) or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in their system, despite being exposed to secondhand marijuana smoke. There were, however, small amounts of COOH-THC, a THC metabolite, found in the systems of 16% of the participants. No long-term problems have been associated with COOH-THC. That said, it hasn’t been extensively studied.\n\nRELATED: [IS CANNABIS SAFE FOR BREASTFEEDING MOMS?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8a1474f24d1300077ccb50/is-cannabis-safe-for-breastfeeding-moms)\n\nIn light of their findings, researchers concluded that the study’s participants absorbed some components found in the cannabis smoke. They also found that children exposed to secondhand marijuana smoke were far more likely to be exposed to tobacco smoke.\n\nThis is the first study in which cannabis metabolites have been detected in children exposed to secondhand marijuana smoke. However, the study lacks a clear conclusion on whether there’s a danger associated with secondhand marijuana smoke exposure. \n\n### What About Vaporizing Cannabis—Is Secondhand Marijuana Vapor Dangerous?\n\nVaporizing cannabis has become a popular alternative to smoking marijuana in recent years due to its smoke-free nature, but the health effects of secondhand vapor have also been questioned. There have been no studies on secondhand cannabis vapor, but studies on e-cigarettes have shown that there are some negative effects associated with this type of exposure.\n\nA study by the [Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-chameides/e-cigs-and-secondhand-va_b_4948399.html) published in the _International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health_ found that tobacco vaporizers decreased the surrounding air quality. When vaporizers were used in a room, they increased the amount of nicotine, particulate matter, PAH and aluminum in the air. All of the substances found in the air after vaporizing tobacco have been associated with health problems.\n\nOf course, it’s important to note again that this study involved the use of e-cigarettes rather than the use of cannabis vaporizers. \n\n### Definitive Research on Secondhand Marijuana Smoke Is Lacking\n\nAfter recreational marijuana use was legalized in the state, Colorado touched on the issue of secondhand marijuana smoke in a pamphlet it released covering [frequently asked questions related to methods of marijuana use](https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/sites/default/files/M_RM_Marijuana-and-Methods-of-Use-FAQs.pdf). The guide warns against smoking marijuana around children, due to dangers in cannabis smoke similar to that of tobacco smoke. The pamphlet also warns that vaporizers may lead to secondhand exposure to chemicals that could be potentially harmful to children. Though extensive research to back up the recommendations made by Colorado is lacking, erring on the side of caution is a good path to take.\n\nThe true effects of secondhand marijuana smoke are unknown. As with many questions related to marijuana, the topic of secondhand smoke and vapor hasn’t been studied to an extent where definitive conclusions can be drawn. What we do know is that there are components of cannabis smoke absorbed by those who are exposed to it second hand, though the ultimate effect of those components on these individuals is unknown. Since the effects are still unknown, it’s best to keep your children clear of any secondhand smoke or vapor from marijuana. \n\n### Play It Safe & Don’t Expose Your Kids to Secondhand Cannabis Smoke \n\nCannabis comes in many different forms, which don’t have secondhand smoke or vapor as a byproduct. Marijuana-infused tinctures and edibles can be a great alternative to smoking or vaporizing, because they don’t expose the people around you to any of the cannabis you’re consuming. One of the most important things to remember is to store all of your cannabis products responsibly, especially if children also reside in your household. Make sure your products are out of reach of children and preferably moved into child-proof containers to reduce the possibility of accidental consumption. And again, be sure to smoke or vape your marijuana when your children aren’t around.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
