"I am 20 years old and about 10 years post op from two liver transplants(first one was unsuccesful). I am to the age where I would like to expiriment w recreational use of marijuanna. I have a few times and it seems like the effects are more severe and long lasting on me, could this be because my body is less capable of processing the thc and other chemicals? The days after I get a dull pain in my abdoman right about where the liver is located. It could very well be all in my head bc I am a hypocondriac, but would just like a definitive answer as to wether or not recrational marijuanna use would be harmful to someone in my position. I am on a plethra of anti-rejection meds and what not, also have ulcerative colitis. Please help"
Past "extant" case reports in the literature state cannabis use in the transplant population is associated with conditions such as glomerulonephritis, heart arrhythmias like ventricular tachycardia and toxicity from anti-rejection meds like tacrolimus. However, newer studies seem to show survival rates for cannabis users for liver, kidney, lung, & heart transplants are the SAME as for non-users. With this information, I would just have an honest talk with the transplant team and ask if cannabis use is okay/not prohibited. I wouldn't, however, necessarily assume that I could get off my anti-rejection medications.
